But recently Lundqvist, who has started just five of the last eight games, and the team have looked off as the Rangers have gone 1-2-1 in their last four games while giving up 15 goals.
Which has me wondering, could it be that the Rangers All World goaltender is getting too much rest?
In his last three games Lundqvist is 1-1-1 with a 3.30 gaa and .891 sv%. I'd say it doesn't look like the additional time on the bench is helping out his game.
And how has Biron faired in the last three starts Lundqvist has missed? 1-1-1 with a 2.62 gaa and .887 sv%. Not exactly killin' it the way he did earlier this season.
The Rangers have 16 games left on the schedule and I see just one game Biron should be starting on March 13th at home against Carolina. There is not another contest in March or April that Biron should even bother suiting up for in my opinion.
So I think it's time. No more fooling around. He's had his rest. He's done his mental preparation. And now it's time for the Rangers team to mount their big horse and ride him into the playoffs and beyond.
Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments section.
no way, they need to give Hank the proper rest so he can be great in the playoffs. He wasn't unbeatable against Washington last year because he played so many games leading up to the playoffs
Goalkeeper is not the problem; sometime someone is going to have to score. Biron has to play some; Hank can't play every game. I hope this is just a speed bump; if not the team will have a new GM and a new coach next year. It will be very disappointing if they lose the division late. All the calls for Avery are silly; he's gone, and he never was that good to begin with IMO.
After tonight, seven straight home games. Plenty of time to right the ship. OK to be nervous, but you can't turn over half the roster this time of year. Nothing a nice three-game winning streak won't cure.
Seems like most readers agree that goaltending is not the issue. Ron Duguay said as much on the air, the team is not getting it done in front of the goalies.
Also, when Hank has to take all of the starts at this time of year he is spent in the post-season. Gotta keep using Biron.
I don't think it's time to worry yet. Yes, the team has its work cut out, but there are 16 more games. I think if the team gets too rattled or panicked that in itself will cause more wear and exhaustion than just staying the course. We need a stronger effort, and maybe during this 7-game home stand we can get things moving in the right direction again.
This is not a bad time for a little slump as long as we turn it around. Let's go into the post-season with some momentum behind us!
I think you should play him about 12 or 13 out of the next 16 games. Large part of that depends on standings though. They must win the division.
Your point is well taken, Kevin, but I think a large factor is going to be where the Rangers are in the standings in, let's say, two weeks. If they're barely holding onto #1, Hank will probably be starting more than would be expected, and maybe more than he should.
It's a precarious situation, given his play down the stretch in the past few seasons. You'd hate to see this season go to waste early in the playoffs over an old, repeated mistake. I think the communication between Hank and Torts is there, though, and even though Lundqvist will want to be in there every game, I think Torts will stay cautious to start him at an increased rate through the end of the season.
We all want that Presidents Trophy and home-ice throughout. These next games coming up are crucial to how the rest of the season will pan out.
I seem to recall saying exactly that in the "Lundqvist to be rested down the stretch" post from a few days ago... And I heard crickets
I Thought Avery Is Finished.. They Let Him Go...Please Explain.. I Am Confused.. I Wish That Too..Sather And Torts Gave Him A Raw Deal???
Recall Avery...get some kind of action going, even if it's him in the penalty box! And the Whales made Redden captain? What's next, they recall Redden for the playoffs?
King Henrik.. Who Knows... Question.. Is Kreider Going To Solve Their Terrible Powerplay.. Somebody Has To Step Up... Teams Are Starting To Catch Up... I Am Looking For A Solution????.. Boring Games Lately.. Boyle, Prust, Dubinsky.. Slumping So Bad.. Last Year We Had At Least 5 Or 6 Guys Near 20 Goals Or More... This Year Very Few.. Gabby And Callahan???... Can Kreider Make The Jump And Make Noise Right Off The Bat In The Second Season.. For The Playoffs???
As much as I like Biron I think people's confidence level in him has dropped. He still has an outstanding record for this season thus far. Playing Lundqvist for the remainder of the regular season into the playoffs can be crucial. Like Ryan said, rather take a dump now and have a rested Lundqvist come playoff time. Plus even losing a game here and there I still say we'll clinch the Eastern Division.
No. Rather struggle now than in the playoffs. A rested lundqvist can be nothing but good. He is used to playing every night has done it his whole career up to this point.
the more biron has played, the worse he's gotten. he can't handle starting every 4th game. hank needs to get used to playing every night because we won't see biron in the playoffs.
For whatever reason, the current arrangement does not seem to be working. I'd shift the balance back to Hank a bit and try to right the ship before long. Errors and sloppy play are creeping into this team's game at exactly the wrong time. And the PP still sucks, which is why -- as good as job as Torts has done overall -- I am not ready to annoint him coach of the year. This PP problem has gone on way too long and will bite the team in the ass in the playoffs, if not sooner.
No way should we "ride" Hank right now. The team has 14 games in the next 24 days. The rangers play 17 games in 30 days this month, including 4 sets of back-to-backs, all of which involve travel between them. We have a 6 point cushion. Biron isn't playing great, but if Hank goes into the playoffs tired it will be a HUGE mistake.
Deveaux, Zuccarello... these guys I want to see shake up our NHL roster. Its kinda ridiculous how we have an entire AHL roster and you do not see more changes during an 82 game season... for the sake of resting certain players, give these guys a call up especially now.
What do we have? 18 more games left?
Lundqvist should not be out there more than 11 of the next 18.
I say keep the plans we had, the previous stanley Cup winners all have goalies who play near 65 games and they come out during the playoffs well rested.
But yes, i think its the team play. Its the positioning and complexity we have turned into since the trade deadline. I guess its no reason 2 worry but I worry not when we lose but when we play horrid.
I have a suggestion, how about they SCORE SOME GOALS!!!!
There are 2 players on this team that combined for 45 goals last season but have only contributed 12 this season.
Their defensemen have 2 PP goals all season and Del Zotto doesn't have 1 of them. Yet he's out there to start every PP.
BTW, Deveaux has 19 goals for the Whale so far this season and 13 of them came on the PP.
The drop in stats for Hank and Biron has more to do wth the team's drop in defensive play than the amount of playing time for Hank and Biron. Hank is unbelievable and Biron is a very good back-up, but they can't stop every shot. It seems like the defense has goten a bit soft, and that's the whole team defense not just the D-men. As much as I would love to see Lundqvist in every game, and as much as I don't believe past playoff failures have been because of too little rest for Lundqvist, I think it's more important for the team to learn to play consistently, regardless of who is in net. I hate to say it, but I would rather they fight through some adversity, get back their mojo, and get the 4 seed instead of playing the way they are and relying upon Hank to stand on his head, get the 1 seed, and then not be able to handle games where Hank doesn't have his A+ game in the playoffs. If this teamis really legit, this little stretch of not so stellar play should help them have a long run into the playoffs, asumng of course they can right the ship.
Just goes to show that without Hank, this team despite being extremely hard working, and playing a tight/tough defensive system quickly starts to look mediocre. Hank aside, I pray these last few games are a small hiccup but I'm not gonna lie, these guys look spent and you wonder if the grind is starting to catch up with them. We need offense in a bad way. Still not sure that Scott was the best we could do at the deadline.
I think it's smart of Torts to start Biron at this point. Better Biron get his legs under him *now* rather than in the playoffs and a (maybe) hurtin' Lundqvist.
We might not like the results so far but to far in the playoffs I think you need to have to equally matched goalies, and from what I could see from last season we were almost there.
However, while Lundqvist seem to have gotten several levels better for (and during) this season, Biron almost seem to have gone the other way.
I am sure it's due to lack of games and Biron will get better down the line. Besides it's better that Biron, Torts and our "D" make these mistakes now....when we're way ahead in the standings.....
Than in the playoffs.
Give Torts credit, he's (sometimes) smarter than we think.
Considering that he is the only reason they aren't a middle of the road 6th seed at the moment and that it 1st place would probably afford them the opportunity to face a less punishing and demanding opponent then the answer is a resounding YES.
Lundqvist should definitely be getting the starts at this point in the season. However, the goalie issue isnt the major cause for concern right now. None of our lines are generating anything, and as I've said in the past our 4th line is sad excuse of professional hockey players... Torts has the opportunity to make 4 moves at this point so why doesnt he f'n do it! I would take Zuc at 50% over Rupp/Scott right now... And dare I say it but getting rid of EC & WW might come back to bite the team... They would be perfect candidates for the 4th line at this point in the season, atleast they have the ability to score.
@orangemike What makes you think that Sather and Tortorella would be fired? Who's going to replace them??
@HZimm Amazing what a couple of 4-1 losses will do.
@cb1 I hear you, but I think a bigger mistake would be going into the playoffs with a Lundqvist who is fighting the puck the way he has recently. Get him in a nice groove and let's dominate in the playoffs.
@MarkFox We can't make changes without waiving someone, because we already have 3 guys in the press box. That's the league rule. Anyone coming up will be due to injury. Also, anyone going down can't play in the playoffs.
There is ONE guy in Connecticut I still think could help this team, who isn't playing down there, and would be worth waiving Wowyitka for. Right before a 7 game homestand too!
@gravey94 IMO. They're going to finish 4th at bests regardless of who is playing goal.. The thing about Ludqvist is that the more he plays the better he gets. I don't buy this burned out tired crap that everyone is talking about. That is pure bullshit. We are talking about world class athleets who are in world class shape and all they have to do is to play hockey. It is clear that without Hank we don't have a prayer to suxceed or even win one round.( unless we start scoring some goals we won't even win with Hank.) Hank wants to play every game and I say let him play every game and see what will happen. Marty Brodour done it in his prime and we saw what happened. The Devils won cups. So lets not be pussy's here! put the best goaly in goal and most importantly score some goals. Especially on the power play.
By the way just for the record, Pittsburgh will win the eastern confrence hands down.
@Iron Mike Mike, the problem is not whose in net. The problem is who is around the net. 1st goal was a bad turnover and terrible positioning. 2nd goal was bad clearing, terrible positioning and no toughness in front of the net. The 3rd goal was getting caught in the offensive zone, bad defensive move and an odd man advantage. So I dont blame Biron... I blame the team, lets go back to basics. Play hard
And you are right, we did not get the best at the deadline. But we did not do the worst. We all forget that our team is the 5th youngest in the league, #1 in the east and a pool of young prospects in the AHL, CHL and Europe. So lets fight for a Cup this year, but why ruin what we may have for future years as well.
@ATCRyan I agree with you on Zuc. But couldn't disagree more on EC. and WW. They had their chances and they failed.
As far as I'am conerned, that chapter is over.Good riddence to both of those loosers.
@ATCRyan Just checked EC's stats in Minnesota, he has zero points in 15 games and is a -13.
@ATCRyan not so sure about EC but Wolski, Mitchel & Zucc as a fourth line wouldn't sound that bad in my ears :)
@KevinDeLury @cb1 Agree with Kev 110%. Hank has always played his best hockey when he's in his groove, let him get in it. A couple extra games to rest for Henrik aren't going to make me feel NEARLY as good about this teams chances as i will going into the playoffs with Hank in his groove.
I don't think Biron's struggles, or the teams struggles when he has played should be a cause for alarm, or a reason to play Hank more, as long as we can keep our cushion. If anything I think Marty's games are the ones Slats and Gordie Clark need to be watching closely. See what this team looks like WITHOUT The King frustrating teams, and start thinking of how to improve them in the offseason, and who may or may not belong on that ever growing "untouchable" list.
@scrangersfan Brodeur played 70+ games a season in his hay day, but he probably averaged under 10 legit scoring chances per game thanks to the trap.Hank has to stand on his head mist nights.
@MarkFox I agree, it's not all on Biron but there are many times when poor positioning and turnovers aren't ever talked about because Hank stands on his head to keep the team in it, and the puck outta of the net. And yes, we gotta get our swagger back... that energy, that edge whatever you want to call it. I still wish we had a certain agitator in the lineup to spark this team below the hash marks.
@AG_Blue @Beckfan5 Suits at MSG not known for their patience; Sather has been under fire for years. Torts might be safer, but late collapse and early (first round) exit would not be good. Not a lot of playoff $ over the last few years. I'm not saying I'd fire them, but I'm not the one making the decision, am I?
P.S. Nice picture of Barry Beck, by the way.
@BuckarooClub @MarkFox -- Oh, I guess you mean Avery? But he is completely out of the conversation so, in effect, he can't help the team.
@gravey94 @scrangersfan i don't know what you call the Rangers style of play but to me it is just as boaring as the trap. I hate that style and I would not watch this style of game if it isn't the Rangers.
As far as Lundqvist, I stand by my conviction. Play him every game, the guy is in superb condition and the more he plays the better he is. The thing is,he wants to play he hates to sit. The guy is a monster.
