What Happens to Rangers Line-up With Doan on Board?

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

In a piece on possible Shane Doan landing spots at NHL.com, Dan Rosen discusses how the Coyotes captain would fit in on the Rangers...

"If Doan signs with New York, he'd likely push Hagelin out of the top six and force Nash to play on the left side, where Nash says he is comfortable.

Until Gaborik returns, the Rangers could field a top line of Nash with Brad Richards and Doan and a second line of Kreider with Stepan and Callahan. Once Gaborik is back, it's possible Callahan, the Rangers' captain, would get pushed to the third line."

...while I loved Hagelin on the top line last year, as his skating ability helped keep pucks alive in the offensive end, the reality is he's a third line player right now. This doesn't mean that I think Doan should be playing on the top line, but it gives Torts a lot more to work with and when you have a player with Hagelin's skill set on the third line you're team is looking pretty good.

...as far as Callahan also moving to the third line once Gaborik returns from injury, I couldn't be more vehemently against that. His grit and determination is needed in the top six. Can't just have skill guys out there. Someone needs to do the dirty work. I'd much rather see Doan drop down to the third spot. Although, a lot of that will depend on how he's playing at the time.

...all of this is moot however, if he doesn't significantly lower his price.

According to Mike Halford at Pro Hockey Talk, Doan talked to prospective Coyotes owner Greg Jamison on Saturday, but no details of that meeting have been released.

Rumor has it that Jamison is $20 million short of purchasing the Coyotes.

The idea of adding Doan to the Rick Nash acquisition has me thinking that the Rangers offense will have MSG on fire this year. What I didn't realize is that it would happen before they even took the ice, as Deadspin reports that a small fire broke out during MSG construction yesterday. This is the second fire during construction this summer...

...looks more like Glen Sather is just celebrating the Nash trade with a box of Cubans. Which reminds me of this scene in Seinfeld...

Cally is one of the best players on the ice. He should never be on anything beneath 2nd line. Doan would make the 4th line better but with that said, they should not be signing him to anything more than 2. Years

I really doubt that Torts would put Cally on a 3rd line. Cally can score when given the chance. I would hope Slats passes on giving Doan that kind of contract.

The fact that Cally scored 29G, and had 271 Hits while scoring 13 PPG's cannot be diminished.  Plus Tort's TRUSTS Cally, in any situation. He's not dropping to the 3rd line.

I personally like Cally on first line on with Richards and Nash. Just try and stop that line.

@CinciMike I do like that mix. Then maybe Kreider-Step-Hagelin. Holy speed. Then replace Haglin with Gabby when healthy. Pumped!

@KevinDeLury @CinciMike I like that a lot guys. Speed line two with unstoppable line 1. And gabby not even in the lineup.

No your post are good, brings some good points but as a Rangers fan you know and everyone knows it will hurt this organization to give 4 year contract to Doan.. The days of over paying for aged guys at end of career are over...

Rosen assumes Doan would play on a pairing with Nash which I don't think happens and he certainly doesn't push Cally down. Cally is younger, and now, a better player than Doan.  Gotta think that Gabby, Kreider and Nash are probably gtee top 6 along with Callahan.  I think you would see Hagelin-Boyle-Doan on 3rd line.

Pointless post- the Rangers are not going to give Doan 30 million for 4 years

All this talk about 1st, 2nd, and 3rd line is moot anyway.  Besides ever changing combos, one thing Torts has proven is that he's going to ride whatever line is producing.  If Stepan's line is struggling, they won't get as many minutes as the Richards or Boyle line, regardless of whatwe or the writers term each line.  It doesn't matter where Cally plays, if he's generating energy and/or scoring, his line will play.  Same for Doan, same for Hags, same for everyone.  Then again it is summer and there's not much else to talk about ;-)

@gravey94 Agreed, but I think with the depth this team has this year you'll see Sather stick with lines longer.

@KevinDeLury @gravey94 I am salivating!!! I just read some articles with flyer fan posts and the freaking sky is falling in flyer land!!! I think the division is gonna be either the Pens or the Rangers. The Rangers depth is scary right now! The Pens are gonna be threats until Crosby and Malkin retire but I like our odds. LETS GET THIS SEASON STARTED!!!

@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG love how njd and nyi are not even in the picture, pit lost staal one of there top five players, Phil lost carle, pronger, and jagr. Let's hope Doan doesn't sign Pittsburgh or philly. The only team in the conference that got a lot better is Carolina.

For the life of me, I don't understand why people would relegate Callahan to the third line in their hyptothetical line combos.  There is NO way Doan would bump Cally to th third line.  Do people remember why he got the "C" in the first place?  Because he throws himself at opposing players with a reckless abandon that creates the forecheck and sets the tone for the entire team.

@AnnoyingJoe I had a lengthy debate with someone on Twitter about this the other day. Baffling.

@KevinDeLury  @AnnoyingJoe If Doan comes to NY, and when Gaborik comes back, it'll be interesting to see what happenes. Doan and Callahan are RWs so one of them has to play on the third line.

@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Doan is 35. Cally is 26. Doan plays third line.

@KevinDeLury @TheWrage @AnnoyingJoe I think both are team first guys. I don't see it being an issue for either if the go to the 3rd line. And to be honest is a more rested Cally in the playoffs really a bad thing?
