NHL Free Agency: Doan, Semin & Kane Updates

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Apparently, the Shane Doan insanity has taken over the Rick Nash insanity as a day after it was reported that the Phoenix captain was interested in San Jose and it looked like he was staying in the West, Will DePaoli at Inside Pittsburgh Sports reports that the Penguins are now on his short list.

It was also reported yesterday that the Penguins have made an offer to Doan...

So this must mean the Rangers are out, right? Wrong. As WGR 550 SportsRadio in Buffalo reports that the Blueshirts have shown some real interest in Doan.

They also add that Doan has received confirmed offers from Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, San Jose, Vancouver, Detroit and Buffalo.

And how much will the 35-year old cost? Gregg Krupa at the Detroit News says the bidding for Doan might start at $7.5 million per season for four years.

...officially out of control if Doan is getting $7.5 million per for FOUR YEARS!!!! You know what? If that's were the market is, I'm glad the Rangers haven't made a big splash yet.

Having said all that, Doan still wants to stay in Phoenix and according to Chuck Pleiness of Michigan's Press & Guide he's going to wait a few more days to see how the ownership issue plays out before making a decision

***

I've read a lot lately about Rangers fans wanting the Blueshirts to sign Alex Semin, but it looks like he might end up staying in Washington, as Capitals GM George McPhee told the Washington Times this past weekend that he has not closed the door on a Semin return to the Nation's capital.

...i know Semin has a ton of talent, but can someone please tell me how you think he's going to fit into Torts' style? You don't honestly think Semin will be throwing his body in front of shots do you? If Sather signed Semin I literally think Torts would quit. Not happening folks.

***

And finally to throw some cold water on my pipe dream of the Rangers obtaining RFA Evander Kane, the Winnipeg Free Press reports that the Jets and Kane's representatives are working on a long-term contract that could see the player signed for up to six years.

...dammit! He would have been awesome on the Rangers.

if Doan is going to cost $7.5M per year, might as well get Nash at $7.8M

It's just that his salary isn't the main problem

With reference to Tortoralla's departure if Slats were to  sign Semin, my answer would be Slats sign Semin.

Do you know how many shots the LA Kings bocked in the 2nd Period of the SC final ; zip, zero, nada...the Devils blocked nine. Blocjked shots are no panacea.;

BTW, when the puck is in the Ranger defensive zone why do the Ranger forwards drop back towardsthe net giving opposition point men to do what they want....blocked shots that injure are more likely to happen under that scenario than if forwards play the opposition d-men tight.

No matter what zone the puck  was in the LA players were in position, yes all this without a ranting, line tinkering coach  The only time i saw

coach Sutter's lips move were late in the 3rd period after a penalty call..

There are 30 coaches and 30 GM's in the NHL and all of them  wanr to win.

Why is Torts the only coach noted for his brief, snarky, pouty post-game interviews..  Why the constant line tinkering; is Tortorella an insecure, self-esteem challenged man..

So yes Slats sign Semin

People are hysterical over Dubinsky getting $4M, can you imagine what it would be like for Doan to get $7.5M!  16 years in the league and two 30 goal seasons.  Yea, sign me up for that!!

Forget the offer sheet to Kane.  There have been 7 offer sheets in the entire league since the Rangers went after Sakic in 1997.  The only one to switch teams was Dustin Penner 5 years ago.  The GMs just don't do them and I don't believe Sather has ever done one.

Gaborik for Boyle is just ludicrous, unless Sather was trying to then get Nash to replace Gaborik's cap hit. But it still doesn't make much sense.  Is it training camp yet????

shane doan making 7.5 for 4 years is insane.

Just FYI- for what its worth; Top 5 plus/minus over last 4 seasons:

1. Burrows, Van. +107

2. Sedin, H., Van. +106

3. Sedin. D., Van. +104

4. Semin, Wash. +92

5. Datsyuk, Det. +83

Risky, but who will score for this team?

@smoothyv Wow! Nice find. Would have never guessed that. Having said that, +/- are never a good indicator of a players performance. Remember the year Malik was like a +30?

@KevinDeLury not saying he is the answer, but there is an upside and maybe his reputation as offense-only is not entirely accurate- maybe Torts is the guy that can get honest effort and production out of him...can't be all bad if the Pens and Wings are seriously interested... question is, with a $30 million offer form the KHL, what will it take to get him?

@IcyCup  @smoothyv Hearing reason he hasn't been signed is because he's been demanding too much money. Next!

@smoothyv semin is a cancer.  +/-  is NEVER the whole picture.  when you have the talking heads in the game who try to be bland and fair about everything/body call the guy out in the media, it says something.

@smoothyv   +/- isn't worth much, but sometimes is an interesting consideration alongside other factors

The more I read, the more convinced I am getting that there are no FA's out there who have any desire to come to NY, and I can't understand that. I'm not saying that the NYR have to be first on everyone's list, but why on earth would a talented player not want to play in the most exciting city in the world? Boggles the mind.

Doan would be a nice fit in New York. Maybe a two-year contract. He's been making about $4.5 million and that's about what I think the organization should be willing to pay him. He'll be 36 at the beginning of the season and he can still contribute. $7.5 oughta be out of range.

If Sather signed Semin, Torts wouldn't quit, he would wind up biting the guy's head off and stapling him to the pine -- or vanquishing him to the Whale, if he could. Semin, if he were to come here, would have the chance to prove me wrong, but I just don't see him working hard enough for Torts.

I still like the idea of showing Evander Kane an offer sheet. It's still a pipe dream, but...  nothing wrong with dreaming, and sometimes your dreams come true.

@AG_Blue I think head cases like Semin can go either way; but that like other head cases he'd be far better off on an already successful whose players are disciplined and have bought into the system. If the Rangers were a mess Semin would be the worst solution; but the Rangers are successful and have buy-in to Torts' system, so perhaps Semin could work out. If nothing else it'd be addition by subtraction because he kills the Rangers.

@tikk10  @AG_Blue That's actually an interesting point. But the Caps have been a successful franchise for the last five years and he gave them fits.

But Ovi did seem to buy into Dale Hunter's philosophy, given it was only for half a season.  I just feel that for all that Semin has to offer, the risks outweigh the reward.

KevinDeLury

@tikk10  @AG_Blue But it seemed that Semin had the toughest time under Hunter who basically turned them into a very disciplined team on defense. I hear you though on the dynamic. I think the Rangers locker room would be a lot less accepting of Semin's antics.

@KevinDeLury  @AG_Blue A successful but undisciplined franchise. Fellow Russian Ovi never bought into what Boudreau was selling and that was a source of constant friction on that team. The Rangers' dynamic is the polar opposite from what was going on in DC.

@AG_Blue If Kane comes to the Rangers I will be doing back flips. Yeah Torts and Semin will go together like oil and vinegar.

AG_Blue

@KevinDeLury  -- given that the Brad Richards article stressed your hamstring, the back flips would probably not be advisable ...

If Semin came here, he'd have one of his smacking fits against his locker after practice.
