Let's Watch Devils Healthy Scratch Cam Janssen Act Like The Idiot We All Know He Is (UPDATED)

Written by Adam Herman on .

I don't think anyone would ever accuse Devils' enforcer Cam Janssen of being a Rhodes Scholar. But if there was ever any doubt that his IQ was even smaller than his yearly point totals, surely that has discarded now. Janssen went on Arch City Radio in St. Louis and showed off his intellect (or lack thereof). Arch City Radio already pulled the video from Youtube, presumable because of the backlash, but you can watch the video here. Some of the highlights from the video (some offensive language is going to follow):

- Janssen accepts congratulations for making it to the Stanley Cup Finals despite literally not playing a single shift the entire postseason. Someone tell John Scott that Boomer Esiason has a commemorative plaque waiting at WFAN for him to pick up.

- Janssen helps to equate losing to the LA Kings to "f**king a fat broad."

- Janssen shows pride and eagerness in hitting players with their heads down and injuring them.

But the big thing that is now receiving attention around the sports world is Janssen stating that any player who was "sucking c**k four weeks ago" is "getting his ass kicked." Now granted, the host did lead him in that direction with his question and Janssen was on a shock radio show, but it's a stupid comment to make; especially when he knows that a broad, public  audience is going to hear it.

When Sean Avery made his infamous "sloppy seconds" comments years ago, he was only really commenting on Dion Phaneuf and Elisha Cuthbert. That resulted in Gary Bettman imposing a suspension and forcing him into anger management. And of course, Devils fans had a field day with it. Cam's comments are unfair to an entire demographic. So here's my challenge to Bettman and Devils fans; show you aren't biased hypocrites. Bettman, show that you weren't just punishing Sean Avery for being Sean Avery. And Devils fans especially, give Cam Janssen every ounce of hate that you would have 100% given Sean Avery if he said anything even remotely similar or offensive. Because if the entire hockey world is going to persecute Sean Avery for stupid comments in a media interview then I don't see why Cam Janssen should be treated any differently. Otherwise, be ready to admit that you bandwagoned the villifying and lambasting of Sean Avery out of blind ignorance.

UPDATE:
Janssen issued a statement through the official website of the Devils and apologized for his statements.

If Avery gets signed somewhere, would Janssen go out and try to hurt him for supporting gay rights?

Nah, but seriously, if certain players would keep their mouths shut they'd look a whole lot smarter. I've been led to believe that most sports franchises have a system where they go over things players cannot say or endorse. It's possible that the Devils administration just accepts that when their players speak no one is actually listening.

It's not just the homophobic comments - which are absolutely deplorable.  Janssen actually says that he goes out with an intent to injure other players!  How is that even remotely acceptable?  This is so, so much worse than absolutely anything Avery ever said or did.

Janssen is nowhere near as much hated as Avery is by the league. Bettman and Shannahan's reaction will probably be "who?", where you know Bettman began salivating when Avery made his comments.  Nothing will come of this I'm sure.

what's most 'laughable', if that word should even be used after watching this, is how Janssen acts like he's even close to a contributor to the Devils.  For a guy who averages 4:40 ice time in the barely 1/2 games he does dress, he certainly has a lot to say about his contributions.

classless, like the organization.

Avery's comments weren't anywhere near as bad as Janssen's.  Yet somehow I think Janssen won't get any discipline...

dude, love the passion and super-well written but...calling out Devs fans?  isn't that sort of like yelling into an empty closet?

i sent an email via NHL.com's comment form directed to "NHL Diversity" voicing my opinion that Janssen be held accountable for his comments.  i hope many of you do the same.

the gay comment is 100% uncalled for and he should be held accountable for it by the Devils and the league.  Players need to know that it's not ok to say shit like that, regardless if the dumbshit radio hosts baited him into it or not.  they're idiots making a stupid internet radio show, not professional athletes representing a team and a league every time they say something in public.

especially with all the work that hockey players and people like brian burke are doing to promote tolerance in sports, I hope the NHL makes an example of Janssen.

bravo.  well written and excellent point with avery.  i feel bad for janssen actually.  there's probably next to no chance of the guy evolving at all in this lifetime.  as ive stated recently on this blog, spouting out homophobic drivel such as this is akin to holding up a huge sign that reads "i am afraid that i may be gay."

Not a lot of that bothered me.

Avery made those comments after a morning skate in the middle of the season. This guy goes on shock radio in the middle of the offseason and says he'd punch a "dick sucker". Avery also initiated his statement out of no where. Those guys walked Cam into every comment.

I don't like how relaxed he was taking credit, though. But then again, he doesn't directly contribute on a nightly basis to begin with. Maybe he could swing an important game or two with a fight or big hit, but that was really the attitude of a guy who is used to just being along for the ride.

The main issue is how bad he wants to hurt guys. How about you lay a huge hit with his head up?

Sorry, as much as I wanted to bash the guy, I really couldn't.
