2012 Rangers Free Agency: Stralman Files for Arbitration; Nash Talks in Holding Pattern

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record reports that Anton Stralman, who was tendered a qualifying offer at 105 percent of the $900,000 he earned last season, was among the list of 16 NHL players who did file for salary arbitration yesterday.

Gross adds that with Stralman filing for salary arbitration, it likely signals the desire on both sides to work out a multi-year deal in the ballpark of two years at $2.6 million or three years at $3.9 million.

...Sather getting closer to shoring up what should be the best defensive corps in the NHL for the second straight season. And you all know who that final piece is. I'll give you a hint, he shares a name with the best grill on the market.

For those of you hoping, with the Zach Parise and Ryan Suter signings out of the way, the Rick Nash saga will be over soon, think again...

...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Despite that report, Columbus GM Scott Howson told the Associated Press that he is "working very hard" to trade Nash.

And apparently "working very hard" means scaring away potential suitors by asking for the moon, as the Hurricanes dropped out of the Nash sweepstakes after Columbus demanded Jeff Skinner in return. (ESPN Insider)

...sadly for Howson and Columbus, there is no way they are getting equal value in return for Nash. Best option may be for them to sit Nash down and see if staying with the Blue Jackets is an option.

Meanwhile, Jesse Spector at the Sporting News takes a look at why Bobby Ryan is more desirable than Nash...

"In fact, a Nash trade will shift him from being captain of a perennially lousy team to a key contributor on a perennially good one. Even if Nash goes to the New York Rangers, who likely will miss Marian Gaborik at the start of the season after shoulder surgery, he would have to share the stage on Broadway, and will face a bigger adjustment to a trade than will Ryan, who has been playing on a team with a former MVP in Corey Perry and a living legend in Teemu Selanne."

...to me the biggest positive for Ryan over Nash is the asking price which seems significantly lower for the Ducks star.

For those of you looking to get the jump on next year's UFAs, Pro Hockey Talk's Jason Brough has the list.

Julie Robenhymer at HockeyBuzz gives us a pretty good scouting report on the newest Ranger, undrafted free agent signee Kyle Jean...

"He's a great prospect at 6'4, 200 lb who knows how to use his body, is surprisingly light footed and recently re-discovered his scoring touch, especially around the net, but I don't think he's penciled into the Rangers lineup this fall. That said, he was poised to be a hot commodity in the college free agent market this year and was invited to several development camps this summer, including Buffalo's this weekend.

At 22 years-old, he's kind of in that awkward development stage where he's better than where he is, but not quite good enough for the next level which is why I think this is a great move for him."

...i dare someone to give me a better scouting department in the NHL than the Rangers. In Gordie we trust.

Finally, yesterday the Red Wings hired former Rangers head coach Tom Renney as an associate coach.

...apparently the Red Wings felt that had too much offense last season.

There's a player in the league that has a last name that rhymes with Char-Grill?

@Beckfan5 Have you ever heard of a charcoal grill made by Weber?

I have one , it is 17 years old and still looks and works like new.

@scrangersfan No never. Maybe they sell them down the same isle as the box of sense of humor?

Just read that McIllrath has a dislocated knee cap from the Jean collision. He had surgery. No camp?

@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG  -- seems like he's always getting banged up ... didn't he get injured last off season?

Hey guys, hate to change the topic (I agree with those that are rooting for Reeney, I think he really turned around this franchise) but I just wanted to throw a name out that hasn't been talked about: Jason Arnott.

In my mind, the Rangers really need a shut down 3rd line center who can still contribute on the offensive end.  Someone who will WIN FACEOFFS and take away minutes from Richards and Cally on the penalty kill and defensive zone.  I really believe one of the reasons Richards struggled offensively is because he was overworked.  He can't be on every defensive zone faceoff that Boyle isn't taking.

I also remember quite well, the day when Arnott would frustrate the hell out of the Rangers across the Hudson.  Of course, this is all null and void if he's asking too much money.  Just thought he might be a smart veteran pickup like Doan.

That's a really lousy thing to say about Renney considering what he did for this franchise. Before Torts got us to the 3rd round in his 3rd full season all we had to show for his tenure was two first round busts where we were badly outplayed and a missed playoffs--Renney made the playoffs all 3 years with far worse teams and took us to the 2nd round twice on the backs of...36 year old versions of Nylander and Jagr? I like your column but typical ingrate Ranger fan mentality with Renney. He was a class act, and a lot of these kids came up under his watch so show the guy some respect...Also, incase you didn't notice our offense has a lot more skill, but still kinda sucks!

@timclancy35 there are always going to be plenty of people who do not like tom renney and do not care how much of a "class act" he was or how nice of guy he was.  he's like the bagpipes:  you either hate 'em or love 'em.

@IcyCup  @timclancy35 The class act shit I don't care about...curse, spray water on fans. Who cares. The team made the playoffs.

@timclancy35 By the end of his time with the Rangers it was REALLY the time to go, but up until then I didn't mind Renney for the reasons you stated.

IDK...I think Renney was a good transition coach.  I think he played a part in changing the organization's paradigm - helped the organization move in the direction the rest of the league was headed.

@AnnoyingJoe  @_Jack  @timclancy35 I think Tom woud be an excellent coach in a junior leage teaching young prospects. He's got the patients and communication skills to establish good report with young players.

@AG_Blue I'd do Hagelin and MDZ and picks.  Even Stepan.  No Kreider or McD

@AnnoyingJoe  @AG_Blue I'd do MDZ and Hagelin but not Stepan. Good centermen are hard to come by and IMO. he is going to be a really solid NHL. centerman.

happy Strahlman will be bak, want nothing to do with Nash at the asking price. I'd prefer to stay the course & give Kreider the minutes.
