"For the sixth time in six shootouts, the Rangers called on Brad Richards out of the two-hole.
For the sixth time in six shootouts, Richards, who came to New York this season with an estimable 25-for-60 mark (41.67 percent) in the skills competition, failed."
...sounds like Richards needs some extra help after practice with shootout specialist EC. You know what, forget that. Keep EC as far away from Richards as possible.
Brad Richards acknowledges that it has started to effect him mentally...
"It's definitely in my head a little bit," Richards said. "You don't just go in with the same approach when you're 0-for-whatever.
"It hurts not to come through."
...I'm not saying this because I was against the Richards signing from the beginning, but if you take away the couple of clutch goals he had early this season, the Rangers prized off-season acquisition has been average at best during his first season on Broadway.
...wasn't he supposed to help the power play?
...although, as long as the Rangers continue to win, you have to consider the signing a success.
"...although, as long as the Rangers continue to win, you have to consider the signing a success."
sounds a lot like AJ Burnetts contract
@thenyrblog You can be critical of Richards move. Success this year cuz of Torts, Hank, and younger guys maturing as players, not Richards.
He seems almost depressed by his lack of offensive productivity. Very un-energetic in interviews, or maybe that's just his personality.
True, but he has 16 goals so far so should get in the high 20's at least. If Anisimov had 16 goals by now, we'd be saying what a great season he is having. Richards isn't an elite player but the Rangers had no center other than Stepan with some offense ability. Compare Richards to what Drury and Gomez provided. He's a better deal than both by far.
There's too much pressure on Richards right now. Let's not forget the abysmal season Boyle is having (something I predicted in my guest post!)(stop patting yourself on the back you idiot!) Richards needs to let his game come to him. I say put him at the point on the power play and keep funneling the puck to him and shoot until one goes in or a rebound is put home. Not that tough.
@thenyrblog he's been somewhat non exsistant as of late . With a 9 year contract with no trade or movement why would he be different ?
I don't know why the coach puts these guys in during the shootout. Put in some wildcards. The coach used to smile and "have fun" with the shootout, now he puts in the big guns and they seem to choke HARD.
@thenyrblog is Torts overteaching some of these guys like Richie, as he even admits that about himself, and just needs to let them play?
Hes been struggling as of late but I don't know about average at best. He's third in goals on the team and 6 of them were game winners. Plus 17 assists ain't too shabby an he has barely taken any penalties.
@thenyrblog He's better then Chris Dury!
@thenyrblog i think most of our players have been average at best, no legit scoring threat, gabs is better the last year but we need more
@thenyrblog anyone up for Richards changing to #91? I am! #rememberscottgomez
@thenyrblog his greatest value is perception of opponents who face a two line threat. it's not coincidence that gaborik flourished this year
@thenyrblog he is very good without the puck...its a new team new home etc..im glad he arrived plus 6 game winning goals thats 12 points
@thenyrblog Production has been mediocore at best, agreed. But can't under value what his intangibles have done. See MDZ.
@Penna_Ali , that IS his personality. Not a lot of fire out of that guy.
@CaptCally24 Contract is starting to look bad again.
@KurtBalogh Six game winners? I think that's more than Captain Clutch had his entire Rangers career.
@KurtBalogh O-fer on the shootout, power play (which he was supposed to help) in shambles, bad in the face-off circle recently and just one goal in his last nine games. Sounds average to me.
@8Gallo2 That's not very difficult.
@ChasingStevel That's a great point.
@Kevin_Boland I up for anything to jump start him again.
@everythingsnext If he doesn't pick it up that perception will whither away real soon.
@bigredonemed All very good excuses for him. lol. Game winning goals were huge early on this season for sure.
@AndyNYR305 Agreed that he's helped for sure. However, you can't prove that MDZ wouldn't have turned it around without him anyway.
@KevinDeLury I suppose you're right. I just want to like him so bad. Damn you Olivia Munn!!!!!!
@thenyrblog we need Brian McCabe back to run the power play pretty sure we got him and there PP numbers went up
@Penna_Ali , yeah, he can seem kinda vacant sometimes too ...
I don't think we should give Munn too much credit here. From what I gather, they saw each other very sporadically for maybe 6 weeks, tops. That's nothing. JMO.
Chris P makes a good point below that his leadership has been an important influence (but when the guy's not producing that has to slip a little too).
@8Gallo2 Initially they did, but pp was brutal late and in playoffs.
