With the trade deadline on the horizon and the Rangers mentioned in numerous rumors (anyone else sick of Nash to the Rangers yet?), Christopher Botta at the New York Times spoke to some players about their thoughts on changing up the current Rangers line-up...Marty Biron...
"This is the best locker room I've ever been in. All I can point out is, we're in a good situation and we've got a great thing going here."
Ryan Callahan...
"The guys should not be nervous at all. Our record shows what we are. Our ability to play as a true team, along with our chemistry on and off the ice, is the biggest reason we have been in first place. No matter what happens, I don't expect anything will disrupt that."
...on Friday I posted that Rangers players wanted Rick Nash, but from the above quotes it looks they're very concerned about what a trade may do to the current chemistry.
...and for a guy like Biron to say this is the best lock roon he's ever been in says a lot.
Mike Rupp has an interesting take on how a minor move could have more impact than a major one, citing a trade that helped him win a Cup with the Devils...
"We got Grant Marshall from Columbus for a draft pick. He gave us more toughness and experience, and no one came off our roster. That deal maybe didn't get a lot of attention, but it was perfect for our team."
...wow, who would have thought getting Grant Marshall from Columbus could have more impact on your team than getting Rick Nash. lol
It may not matter what the players think, as Nash to the Rangers is really heating especially when Katie Strang at ESPN NY reports that Blue Jackets senior advisor Craig Patrick attended the CT Whale game last night.
Now it should be noted that Strang also reports that the Whale were playing Columbus' AHL affiliate, but for a senior advisor to attend the game you have to assume something is going on.
And for those of you concerned about Nash's contract destroying the Rangers cap-wise in the future, Steve Zipay at Newsday tries to put those concerns to bed...
"For those worried about future cap issues, such as what to do when Gaborik's $7.5-million-per contract is up in two years, well, would you rather have Nash at 29 or extend Gaborik at 32?"
Zipay also says with the Rangers stockpile of prospects to go along with the young talent already on the roster, the Blueshirts may want to include a package that includes Tim Erixon, JT Miller and (gasp!) Carl Hagelin.
...i can see both of Zipay's points, but the Rangers cap issues will go beyond just Gaborik the next few years and not every prospect pans out so getting rid of three of the best may not be the best idea.
