Rangers Covet Whitney

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

whitneyPierre LeBrun at ESPN.com reports that the Rangers are one of three teams (Bruins, Sharks) that covet the Coyotes' Ray Whitney.

LeBrun adds that Whitney has a no-move clause that calls for him to list eight teams to which he'd be willing to be traded. A source told ESPN.com that that conversation had yet to happen.

The 39-year-old Whitney has 16g, 33a this season. 11 of his 49 points have been on the power play. Whitney is in the final year of his contract that pays him $3 million this year.

...as someone mentioned during TheNYRBlog live chat last night, the Rangers need scorers not distributors and while Whitney has 16 goals he's more of a play-maker than sniper.

...having said that, i wouldn't complain if the Rangers acquired Whitney as he would most definitely help the power play and they should be able to get him cheap. His expiring contract makes him that much more attractive.

From Wikipedia: "Whitney is one of only 31 players in NHL history to record an overtime game-winner in a seventh game in the playoffs, which he accomplished in 1995 against the Calgary Flames while with San Jose.[3] Whitney is the only remaining member of the San Jose Sharks inaugural team (1991–92) still active in the NHL."

Nothing wrong with The Wizard as a playoff rental.

@thenyrblog But where would you put him? And who would we trade? Picks? Maybe he'd replace AA on GAS? That could work nicely...
