Rangers Are Money When Scoring First

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Dave Caldwell at the New York Times reports when the Rangers score first they are almost impossible to beat...

"The Rangers have opened the scoring in 30 of 56 games this season. They have won an impressive 27 of those games, for a winning percentage of .900 that leads the N.H.L. by a wide margin. (Boston is second, with a winning percentage of .846.)"

The Rangers are 10-13-3 in games in which their opponent scores first.

...the Rangers aren't going to blow a lot of leads when they have the best goaltender in the world and pretty damn good defense.

...what I like the most, however, is that the Rangers, for the most part, don't sit back with a lead. They stay aggressive with the forecheck and create additional offensive chances which more often than not increases their lead.

Caldwell adds that the Rangers lead the N.H.L. in hits and fighting majors and are third in blocked shots.

Ever since game 5 vs Washington, stats like this mean nothing to me. They went all year without losing a 3rd period, and that game it happened and virtually ended their season. All that matters is how they play when it counts.
