Victoria Matiash at ESPN Insider reports that Columbus GM Scott Howson has not yet talked seriously with the Rangers about Nash.
...wait? What? How is that possible.
Meanwhile, Corey Pronman also at ESPN Insider gives five prospects the Rangers could offer for Nash including Tim Erixon, Chris Kreider, Michael St. Croix, J.T. Miller and Dylan McIlrath.
...my thoughts on trading any of those five: no, no, no, no and no.
Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record says if the Rangers acquire Rick Nash before the trading deadline it would likely signal the end of Marian Gaborik's tenure with the Blueshirts...
"Squeezing Nash's contract under their tight salary cap would likely preclude the Rangers from re-signing a then-32-year-old Gaborik as his deal is completed.
Or, with the need to re-sign upcoming restricted free agent Michael Del Zotto ($1.1 million) after this season and fellow young-core members Ryan McDonagh ($1.3 million) and Derek Stepan ($875,000) after the 2012-13 season, while also presumably finding a spot for top prospect, current Boston College left wing Chris Kreider — assuming none are dealt for Nash — the Rangers may feel compelled to trade Gaborik sooner."
Gross adds that because Gaborik, Nash and Brad Richards all need the puck to be successful it would be difficult to get each of them enough touches.
...this is a very interesting sidebar to the whole Nash trade rumor. Not every elite player can succeed on the big stage in New York and we already know Gaborik can. No so sure with Nash. But in three years would a 32-year-old, injury prone Gaborik be better than an in-his-prime 29-year-old-Nash? Doubtful.
...when Gaborik's contract runs out in 2014 he will most likely be reduced to a complimentary player. So the Rangers will really have to hope players such as Stepan, Kreider, Hagelin and Miller develop to their potential if they want to have any offense. But if they're able to bring in a Nash at the deadline, when Gaborik's deal is done they'll still have a certified sniper to go along with a stable of rising young talent. That is unless they trade all of that talent away to get Nash.
...either way, another tough question Sather has to answer in his pursuit of Nash.
For Wojtek Wolski's thoughts on possibly being traded, click the "Read More" tab below.
Pat Leonard at the Daily News has this quote from Wojtek Wolski on getting moved at the deadline...
"I know I'm supposed to be getting traded, I hear it all the time," said Wolski, who becomes a restricted free agent after his two-year, $7.6 million expires at the end of the season. "I know I have a big contract. If they could trade me and free some space and get some value, I'm sure it's possible. But I have no control over any of that."
...wow, those are some pretty pretty open and honest statements from Wolski. Rarely hear that from athletes these days.
...as far as him being traded, he's correct the Rangers would love to move him and his salary.
Nash #s not bad for the players he's playing with!!! Just think what he would have here!!! And the boost of playing with the best!!! Power play turn around for sure!!!
If the price were more reasonable than the rumors, this would be a no-brainer. This team needs more scoring in general and some serious help on the PP. Period. This is a fun, hard-working and talented team, but in my honest opinion, that will not be enough for the Cup grind. What's more, if a key scoring forward goes down, the Rangers and their season likely goes down with him, even if Hank continues to stand on his head. The fact is that the Rangers have too many guys that contribute little to the scoring sheet... Dubi, Boyle, etc. Hard working? Yes. Team guys? Yes. But unless they regain their scoring touch from last year, it's going to make the Rangers quest for the Cup a tough slog. JMHO.
^agree but Boyle is like Prust. Best penalty killers on the team. I think he's best face off center on team but he plays soft for his size.
I thought most people would realize getting Nash would be the end of Gaborik in the future. Makes sense. By that time a few players should be due for a pay raise anyway.
@thenyrblog Tell ESPN to stick with basketball. They've been out of the hockey business for a long time and it shows.
Following these Nash rumors is like a roller coaster ride. So it's probably not happening now? Are the Blue Jackets going to be able to trade him at all? He's too expensive.
the not enough touches thing doesnt apply in the nhl.. this isnt the nba... if u get the ice time ur gonna get chances to put the puck in the net... what a stupid thing to say.... its not like there all even gonna play on the same line.... some writers are so stupid
"...That was the Rangers’ final visit to Mellon, but they’ve had no issues winning across the street. New York (38-14-5) has outscored the Penguins 15-6 at Consol Energy Center and is 4-0-0 in the two-year-old building after a 3-1 victory Jan. 6."
how do you computer geeks make those animated gifs? I want to make one of Adam Graves breaking poor little Mario's wrist in half.
this blog is like spanx. there's enough room eventually but you've got to push everything upwards or downwards to make it fit
dear Rangers, please stop sending Sean Avery to Hartford.
the state of Connecticut sucks enough as it is
@KevinDeLury oh stop you silly goose. They were actually fairly timid, relative to last time. I killed them with kindness
@_Jack the CEC was built on ancient Indian burial grounds. This explains all the injuries too
@_Jack I think they all left...except one. And he's fairly pleasant
@AnnoyingJoe he's dead. Shero is currently in talks to try and trade for a necromancer to raise Zombie Sid to destroy the NHL
@SaintMarty not unless everyone else is hurt
@cb1 +1. My damn phone won't let me "like"
@cb1 they're nothing if not creative. #Unlimitedfreetime
@cb1 BURY GRAVES
@YinzerinCT may be uncomfortable but it makes your posts look slimming. isn't that all that matters?
@24SesameStreet OMG YES
@SaintMarty he's done. Torts ran him out
@SaintMarty Best part is Avery is a healthy scratch most of the time.
@AnnoyingJoe Ok, haven't been on the blog all day. See "yins" later.
@SaintMarty wonder what effect being undead would have on his tear ducts. Oh snap!
@cb1 why did they even trade for that waste? Didn't the Rags give away some equally stupid contract in the trade? I don't remember these things
@SaintMarty wasnt his fault mario didn't wear real gloves
@AnnoyingJoe Tortorella hates Sean Avery so much. One of his finest qualities actually
@_Jack you didn't miss much. LGR
@SaintMarty Rozy played well only when jagr was on the ice...must have been a czech thing, or an ex-pen thing
@cb1 oh man, as a Pens fan, how happy was I for the Rangers to sign him to that absurd contract.
especially when the Pens went and signed Orpik for like half the amount Roszival made
@AnnoyingJoe I think the only thing he had going for him was the past few years, the Rags seemed to have a better record with him in the lineup for whatever reason.
and now this year without him they've gone and become one of the top teams in the league. He won't be missed
@SaintMarty No Ranger fan would deny the unbridled hatred every tram/opposing fan had for him. Maybe that's why we loved him so much. And he was an effective player, when allowed to do his thing. Anyway with torts coming it was only a matter of time, and you can't argue with the results
@AnnoyingJoe Sean Avery acting like a prick is pretty much written in his DNA. What a waste of a human being
@SaintMarty he done did himself in in CT acting all silly.
