Mediation Goes Nowhere Again

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

After another long day of CBA negotiations with federal mediators, Joe Yerdon at Pro Hockey Talk reports that the NHL and NHLPA are no closer to striking a deal.

Here's NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr...

“There were discussions of the various issues involved and how far apart we are and where we go from here. I can’t tell you that any progress was made.”

...as much as I've tried to keep my expectations in check about a potential deal, I really didn't think these guys were dumb enough to lose another season. They literally have the future of the NHL in their hands and instead of trying do to whatever they can to insure its stability, they've decided to destroy it. Not sure how the league can comeback after this debacle.

No further meetings have been scheduled at this time.

I was a hockey beat writer for years, am a huge hockey fan and have family that is still involved in the NHL. This is disgusting. I am embarrassed for the NHL. After years of trying to make the game more enjoyable for the fair-weather types and the fledgling fans, they've really stuck their foot in it this time. Those people won't stick around. I hate the NBA, but at least they figured out how to compromise and play the game. Shameful.

The NHL- if done right- could overtake basketball in popularity. they were course before the lost season, and now as a result of this bs, it will never happen. not in a decade or 2- never.

Fans need to prove a point, with an empty stadium they will get the hint.

FANS WALKOUT! Lockout implies they will still have control. If fans honestly don't boycott, they will NEVER hear us!

I say if they do settle we should boycott everygame so they know the fans are pissed.

Hockey is done, it's so sad. At this point I'm over these greedy scumbags. Fuck hockey almost came out of my mouth. Almost.

There will be no N.H.L. this year. Move on to better things. Like college hockey. They play for the love of the game.

I honestly don't think we're out of the antic stage yet. If another week or two goes by and some real negotiating doesn't happen; than I'll be worried.

I know this is asking a lot, but I think the media needs to start boycotting these meetings. As long as there are still articles and videos on ESPN and TSN, as long as there are still newspaper and online articles, it means we're all still paying attention. Forget about the PR, the posturing, the press conferences that contradict what happened behind closed doors.

The NHL needs to realize how quickly all the progress in the past 5 years can be taken away, pull their heads out of their asses, and get back to work. Let Gary Bettman give his next update to an empty room, maybe that will spark something...
