Traverse City Tournament Canceled

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

The Detroit Red Wings have announced that the NHL Prospects Tournament, which the club annually hosts at Centre ICE Arena in Traverse City, Mich., has been canceled.

"Due to the uncertainty surrounding the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the advance commitments required from the various parties including hotels, airlines, teams, players and their families, etc., we have determined that it is in everyone's best interest to cancel this year's tournament," Red Wings GM Ken Holland said. "The Red Wings and the seven other NHL teams that were scheduled to participate are committed to returning to Traverse City in 2013 and continuing with this tremendous tournament."

Beside the Red Wings, this year's tournament was set to include entries from the Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues.

...as if I wasn't already in a bad mood with all the lockout talk going on. Once again the fan loses.

Traverse City was not going to happen the moment the NHL told the Vancouver Canucks not to hold their "Young Stars" Tournament back in May (their version of the TC tournament)

It is more than just the prospects who got hurt here as these camps open last chance doors for players who otherwise would not have gotten an invite to an NHL training camp.

This is really cutting off an entire leg to cure a hangnail because the prospects and the teams are the only real losers here. None of the Rangers who will find themselves locked out would have attended TC.

@TheProspectpark Yeah, saw a tweet from Christian Thomas last night expressing his disappointment. Could have been a nice springboard for him going into training camp. You know, if there is a training camp.

@TheProspectpark its so sad...I really relished the opportunity to watch players trying to make a name for themselves...It was successful enough for them to try again next year....maybe we can watch them play for team Usa well I mean the three chosen. Nhl network will broadcast cast that for sure!

@TheNYRBlog Always a good tourney to see what the prospects got. Tough blow to Traverse City businesses as well. #badnews #letthemplay

Well I asked the question of you Kevin, yesterday.  Guess I got my answer, huh?  Not the answer I was hoping for.
