Signing Doan Would Cost Rangers In Long Run
Written by Kevin DeLury on .
Elliot Olshansky at Sports World Report says that while signing Shane Doan would improve the Rangers this season, it would cost them in the long run..."Four Rangers are due to become restricted free agents next summer: forwards Derek Stepan and Carl Hagelin and defensemen Ryan McDonagh and Michael Sauer. If Doan were to sign in New York for $7 million per year, the Rangers would have about $11 million in salary cap space to sign all four players. Given Sauer's lingering issues from a concussion - he's questionable for the start of the coming season - it's conceivable that the Rangers might not be interested in bringing him back, but still, those four players would cost significantly more next summer than the $4.3 million they're due to make in 2012-13, and having so much money tied up in Doan could leave the Rangers unable to match an offer sheet for one of their prized players."
...as if I didn't already hate the idea of paying Doan $7 million per year, this pretty much clinches it.
...i'm more than confident that Sather & Co. are aware of this scenario and will not risk the future of the franchise for a one-year run at the Stanley Cup.
...man the Doan insanity has really quieted down lately. Ultimately, I think he ends up back in Phoenix as it looks like their ownership issues are being worked out.
H/T to Hockey This Week.

@TheNYRBlog no Doan ! Give me a kid that s ready to step up no more overpaid overaged players get him only at the right price 2 years top
@TheNYRBlog I wanted Doan badly if they weren't going to get Nash. Now with Nash on board, I don't think they need Doan quite as much.
@TheNYRBlog @Garts2point2. I'd also like to see what Haley and Segal and Kolarik even and some of the kids (Miller, etc.) can do in camp.
He will not get 7M anywhere besides Phoenix. That's a fact. 37yo making 7M sounds as stupides to GMs as it does to us
@TheNYRBlog Agreed. I honestly don't see Doan cracking #nyrangers top 3 lines. Too expensive for 4th liner. #GiveKidsAChance. @Garts2point2
@jrromman before Gaborik returns Doan is easily a top 6, then would slide down to 3rd. Nash,Gabby,Doan on lines 1,2,3 would be great balance
@Garts2point2 I'm with @TheNYRBlog. If it's 4 yrs Doan wants, #nyr will eat the last 2 years of deal. Would rather have paid Pruster.
@Garts2point2 I have:Nash/Stepan/Kreider;Hagelin/Richards/Gaborik;Pyatt/ Boyle/Callahan. Myabe replace Pyatt but then why'd we pay Pyatt?
@Garts2point2 True, but not an established All-Star wi. Oympic credentials, etc. Dubi has much more to prove. @TheNYRBlog
@jrromman hags, Kredier, McD, MDZ, Stepa ... Not enough young hunger? Also have prospects who will push these guys in camp at the very least
@Garts2point2 We lost youthful hunger this summer (Mitchell, Artie, Dubi, Prust). Too much to pay for depth. Need youthful hunger.
@jrromman so depth a bad thing? If Asham or Rupp sit for Pyatt or they constantly are fighting for one spot, whats the problem?
@TheNYRBlog Petr Sykora is still on the free agent list. I liked him for the 1/2 season we had him and would not mind bringing him back.
@TheNYRBlog hmmm. maybe i’m older than I thought. I’ve beeen watching him on the Pitt and NJ the past few years and think he’d be an asset.
With how many chances he has given the yotes I don't see Doan signing with anyone else So moving on I wouldn't mind signing Eric Fehr to fill that 3rd line role on the cheap
@KevinDeLury It's def something to consider. it was a torn labrum same injury as gabby I think. He missed a lot of time last season but if he passed a physical I think he can bring more then a lot of the other options that are left
I'm happy with the moves they made so far. I'm confident in the team they have going into the season. Hopefully there is no lockout. Can't wait for the season to start!
@TheNYRBlog i like doan but 7mil for a 25goal 2/3 line spot isnt being financially smart. Again the owners need saving from themselves
@TheNYRBlog rangers have drury coming off books after next season. If needed after they win the cup I can see them trading gabby
@TheNYRBlog but you also have rupp, asham, and halpern coming off. Plus if there is a new luxury tax than they can exceed the cap.
@TheNYRBlog I told everyone that bettman is the real enemy in these negotiations. Say bye bye to the season. Bettman going for the kill
@TheNYRBlog I think he got the hang of it here in nyc. Maybe he is gonna give up his canadian citizenship also.
@TheNYRBlog my point is don't worry about signing the kids. Sather will get it done.
@the1andonlydg Rupp and Asham don't come off until 2014. I shudder at the thought of Sather & a luxury tax.
@TheNYRBlog while that may be true - the next 2 seasons are the chance to win the cup - don't know how many great years Henrik has left
