Rick Nash Relishes the Chance to Play in New York

Written by James Wrabel on .

While taking a tour of the Madison Square Garden renovations currently underway last week, newcomer Rick Nash admitted to New York Rangers beat writer Jim Cerny his graciousness for having the chance to play for an original-six team embedded with tradition.

"For me to end up in New York with one of the most historic organizations, playing at Madison Square Garden, is so exciting," said Nash. "I think every kid dreams of playing in a big-time city, and I don't think there's a better place than here for me."
  • It sounds as if Nash really wanted the opportunity to play for the Rangers. He knows that big-time pressure to win comes with the territory and sounds like he wants to embrace that challenge. Other athletes before him have had the same sentiment and failed. Will Rick Nash be the next in a long line of NY busts? I'm confident in saying if he works hard, and puts forth the effort required, not a chance.
And here's a pic of the gloves Nash will be wearing this season, courtesy of reader Bill K...

Winwell is going to have to redesign these gloves and add the extra hand protection Torterella ordered so Nash can block shots like the rest of the team...... wait, do you think that will really happen?

@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Definitely cool stuff. My readers stepping up once again.

@KevinDeLury I'm such an equipment fanatic. I hope NHL 13 steps up their gear game and actually updates this kind of stuff next year. They don't do winwell and they haven't updated the helmets in forever, and when they do it's some kind of bastardization of the actual gear.

@billkeryc Wow really good information. Thank you. Hasn't the 4500 been around for years now though? Don't get me wrong, I love this game. If it wasnt for this game I wouldn't own a gaming system, they have pretty great game play but I just wish they'd update some of the superficial stuff. For instance I'd love to be able to do a jersey tuck on a goalie, and I'd love it if they would do a facial scan on more players. If they sent 2 or 3 teams of scanners out in the field to arenas a facial scan on all the players can be don't in like a week. I'm sure the players would give a few minutes to get their faces in the game.

@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG  Because Callahan, McD, Nash wear the Bauer 4500 model, which wasn't in the game. Anisimov actually wears the 9500 which is the one in the game (which he actually switched to the Warrior one IRL). When a player uses gear that isn't in there, it defaults to the same brand, but what model they have.

Just like how all the player's using Easton RS sticks in real life, get defaulted to S19's in the game. The Warrior one was an interesting case because that helmet was not introduced in the NHL anywhere near. I think they gave EA a prototype to use for the game, which kind of explains the different shape as well as different name (it's the Krown IRL, Koretex in the game).

The gear that they do have, is spot on to what it is IRL. But yeah, I'm tired of seeing S17's in the game when that got completely replaced by S19's and players still used SE16's as far as 2 seasons ago. Hopefully the RS and Mako will be in it, as well as Bauer's Total One, APX, and Nexus. Variety sucks, but it's all they can work with!

@billkeryc @KevinDeLury Ya I understand that it's about money and that's fine. But what I don't get is why don't some of the helmets and stuff look like the helmets the players wear. For instance the Bauer helmet players like Cally, Nash, McD wear looks only similar to the actual helmet. I'll give the credit that the Bauer helmet that Anisimov wore looks almost exactly like the one in real life. But then you have the Warrior helmet in the game that looks nothing like the real one. I just want the gear to be updated even if all the gear is not included.

@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG  @KevinDeLury  Common misconception: not really up to EA. It's how much the brands are willing to pay to be in the game. It's why you see 3-4 options of Bauer gear, 2-3 Easton, 2 Warrior, 2 CCM, etc.

So really it's up to the brands to get what they want in there, for how much they can spend. So you don't see Combat, Winnwell, and other lower-popularity brands in there; not enough $$ to get a spot.

Listening to Nash this offseason, reminds me of Richards last year. Let's hope Nash brings the same kind of success Richards ushered in.

@KevinDeLury Like Richards, Nash was in a leadership role in Columbus and brings that experience here. Maybe he takes Kreider under his wing like Brad did with Stepan last year. If I'm Kreider, I'd want to pick Nash's brain all day.

@TheWrage Hell yeah, I'd also love to see Hrivik with Nash during training camp.
