NHLPA to Present Alternative Not Counter Proposal
TSN reports that the NHLPA will make its CBA proposal to the NHL at 11am this morning which is expected to include expanded revenue sharing and more flexibility than is currently allowed under the league's rigid salary cap system...
"What we expect to do (Tuesday) is to put forth an alternative view as to what we should do next," NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr said. "That's the best way I can put it."
The initial offer from the NHL called for a lowering of the players' share in revenue and introduced new contract restrictions, among other things.
Here's Gary Bettman on the forthcoming NHLPA proposal...
"I'm interested, very interested. We'll have to wait and see. I'm not going to try and speculate as to what they're going to present. I have no idea."
Bettman said last week that the players will be locked out if a new CBA is not agreed on by the September 15th deadline.
TSN also speculates that the NHLPA proposal may include a luxury tax for teams that spend above a specific threshold.
...while I'm excited that the NHLPA is finally ready to present their proposal, I'm not sure I like that it's an alternative proposal over a counter proposal. To me that pretty much guarantees that the players plan is going to ignore the owner's initial offer and lay out their own vision of the future of the NHL, meaning we're not going to be any closer to a final agreement.
...September 15th is rapidly approaching with sadly no end to this madness in sight.
