2012 NHL Free Agency: Latest on Doan & Arnott

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

arnottI'm more than happy going into training camp with the Rangers current roster, but two players that have been rumored to be coming to New York have been making news lately.

Ben Kuzma at the Vancouver Province reports that UFA Jason Arnott might be headed to the Great Northwest aka the Vancouver Canucks...

"There have been some preliminary discussions," Arnott's agent said. "He has quite a bit left in the tank and wants to play the game a couple of more years and is willing to go on one-year deals because he understands the business at his age.

"He brings exactly what the team needs and I sense there's a mutual interest there, too."

Jim Jamieson at the Vancouver Province adds that the St. Louis Blues decided not to offer the 37-year old Arnott (17g, 17a last season) a new contract because they're trying to get younger.

Doug McIntyre at ESPN.com says the Toronto Maple Leafs could be another potential landing spot for Arnott.

...not looking good for an Arnott return to the tri-state area. To be honest, I've yet to see a legit rumor linking Arnott to the Rangers.

...having said that, I think he'd be a great fit for the Rangers on a one-year contract. Especially if Tortorella isn't 100% comfortable with Stepan centering the second line. Would mean one less spot for a prospect to possibly win though.

In "Doan Watch" news, Kevin Kurz at CSN Bay Area reports that the San Jose Sharks are among the favorites to land the services of the free agent forward. For more on Doan, keep reading after the jump.

Doan, whose preference is to stay in Phoenix, is reportedly seeking a four-year contract worth $30 million.

Speaking of Phoenix, ownership issues remain a mess as Ryan Lambert at Puck Daddy reports potential Coyotes owner Greg Jamison is still $20 million short of the $170 million necessary to purchase the team.

Doan met with the Canucks earlier in the week, who are seen as another front runner to land the Coyotes captain.

Nashville could also be a possible landing spot because of Doan's familiarity with the city.

...with the Phoenix ownership issue a complete mess, it looks like a pretty safe bet that Doan won't be suiting up in the desert next season. Having said that, unless his demands are dramatically curbed his new destination will not be New York.

...so looks like no Arnott or Doan for the Rangers. And you know what? I'm perfectly fine with that. I'd much rather watch a bunch of hungry prospects fight for that final spot anyway.

That would be great news. Even though we lost pruster, Dubi, & AA, very happy to get 61. If sauer gets healthy we are good .

It's unfortunate because either one of those guys would be a great fit for the Rangers!

We're good for now if we're really desperate we can make a trade. Let's see what we have right now

Driver was a D-man so he's not it... He wasn't overpaid and wasn't that bad... I would say Gomez also but we got McTruck... The correct answer is Bobby 5 yr 45million Holik...

I recall the last time signing a overaged ex Devil, we got burned pretty badly... Pass.....

The difference this year compared to the past is that Arnott would be brought in to be part of the puzzle not the man. Agreed that he's not needed.

Safety net? Says who! For what? Wanna be like the Knicks and sign all the late 30's age player who are at the end of their career? The Rangers have won with home grown talent and couple of big signing (Gab /Richards)... You also forget we have Brian Boyle who is more than capable of scoring 20 goals if given the opportunity

I hear you guys on Stepan. This is his year to show us what he's got. Bringing an Arnott in as a safety net could have Stepan doubting himself.

Stepan didn't put up horrible numbers, not sure why people are dogging him... You have to remember that it's only his 2nd season, MDZ didn't have great 2nd season and looked what happened this past season.. 41 pts, +20 rating...

We can sit here and talk about Arnott & Doan all we want, but the much bigger need for the Blueshirts is a depth defenseman.

@KevinDeLury And of course MDZ still needs to be signed. Don't know what takes so long.

@dapowl  @KevinDeLury not only does DZ need to be signed but he needs to make sure and step it up this year. I'd like to see him imporve his shot. ei shoot on net and maybe add some power. We need a PP quarterback and still don't have one. I'm sure Nash will help the PP though...said that about Richards too.

@KevinDeLury Agree - hard to tell in just 2,5 seasons in the NHL that were at least inconsistant.

@dapowl Has to work on his decision making skills. Not sure that can be taught though. Usually instinctive. Don't know if he has it.

@KevinDeLury This kid has so much potential to be one of the best - at this age. Hope he will get to that level within the next few years.

@KurtBalogh  @dapowl No doubt a huge year for Del Zotto. As you say, he needs to become the power play quarterback we all know he can be.

@dapowl Yeah, starting to get a little concerned. What could be the hold-up?

KurtBalogh
KurtBalogh

@KevinDeLury  @dapowl the consensus around the organization is that the signing will get done though. Not worried about it really.

Arnott is not a #2 center anymore.. U live and die with stepan or put Helpan to take defensive draws and change on the fly

dapowl

how can doan demand that much... this is just a rumour imo... doan for 2 years selanne or jags $ would be a fit - but he cant demand much more

KevinDeLury

@dapowl Agreed. He'll ultimately end up signing for less b/c no team can be crazy enough to sign him at the amount. Right?

dapowl
dapowl

@KevinDeLury thats the hope... hope sather doesn't relapse :) but you have to be crazy as hell to pay over 7 mill

@KevinDeLury @dapowl -- I almost hope some team does give him that money. Let Vancouver or San Jose handicap themselves for the next four years (or more when they wind up buying him out).

I wouldn't mind the addition of Doan at all but NOT for 4 years and definately not for that much. Unless Sather has a (re)lapse in judgement I doubt we'll see him in blue and just like you, I'm fine with that.

@KurtBalogh The Rangers, as currently constructed are a Stanley Cup contender, so losing out on these two is not the end of the world.

dapowl

 @KevinDeLury  @KurtBalogh but adding a good

veteran for a year wouldn't be bad either :)

@KevinDeLury @dapowl @KurtBalogh originally I wad against getting Bash because I thought it would cost too much. I think we got a really good deal on him. I thoughtdoan was a better option because we wouldn't have to give up anything. Now I think that doan would cost too much.

dapowl

@KevinDeLury  @KurtBalogh so still a chance to start the season as the very best team in the NHL :) to repeat it one more time: Great time to be a Rangers fan!

KevinDeLury

@dapowl  @KurtBalogh I think that was a rumored offer from the Sabres. Haven't seen anyone attribute that number coming from Doan's camp. Actually, I've seen Doan's agent deny that's what his client is looking for.

dapowl
dapowl

@KurtBalogh  @KevinDeLury Is there any source on the 30mil/4year???? - i think its just a twitter thing with no relevance and i'm not sure but i thought i heard that his agent even said that this price is not real

@KurtBalogh  @dapowl That's a good point Kurt. He doesn't seem like a player who wants to bounce from city to city so a two-year contract may not even be an option for him.

KurtBalogh
KurtBalogh

@dapowl  @KevinDeLury Doan for 2 years would be fine but it seems like he's seeking a little more security. If that rumor is to be believed, that is.

dapowl
dapowl

@KevinDeLury  @KurtBalogh I think he would not come for just one (Doan) so 2 year min/max for the Rangers. Otherwise, we still have some young guns to fill some spots.

@KevinDeLury  @KurtBalogh lets say doan comes for 4-4.5 mil - and 2 years - damn! Would that be a hockey team this season...

If we get them, that's fine. However your right, let's go to war with what we have. It's a good mix of veterans an youth right now. Those young players will mature and improve this year. Let's go rangers
