Rangers Playing Close to Their Identity

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Andrew Gross at Rangers Rants has numerous quote from John Tortorella on what's going right with the Rangers...

"I think the past two or three games has been as close to our identity as we've gotten this year.

"It's a big part of our identity is our physical play," Tortorella said. "Our faceoffs, Brad Richards from Day 1 has been really good. Last night, we didn't lose too many. Those things help, the small details of the game. Now we've won three straight, you've got to continue to work at the details. I don't think our game is dead on, we've found ways to win but you've got to continue to work on your game."

...if they're only close, I can't wait to see this team when they're at 100% of their identity.

...and as usual, Callahan is the focal point of the Rangers physical play. Real proud to have him as the captain of the Rangers.

@AnnoyingJoe Hey man, no big deal. I'm extremely hungover from drinking at the game last night so I'm not doing any work today.

@biggoron Callahan cashed in by completing a 200-foot rush that started with Richards' defensive zone faceoff win from Matt Cooke. Dan Girardi led the rush to Richards, who fed Callahan. He found Gaborik on a backward diagonal pass and the Slovakian winger gave the puck back to Callahan for a one-timer from the right post.

Tuesday's win was the Rangers' seventh straight at the Garden and 10th overall in the last 12 games. It moved them into second place in the Atlantic Division behind the Penguins, who have three more points but have played four more games.

Brad Richards didn't want to say what is quickly becoming obvious -- that right now, the New York Rangers belong in the conversation about the elite teams in the Eastern Conference.

The Rangers completed their own personal hat trick Tuesday night by defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 at Madison Square Garden, scoring all of their goals in the second period.

It was the Rangers' third win in as many games against Eastern Conference teams that have grown accustomed to being talked about as elite.New York also won at Washington on Friday and at home against Philadelphia on Saturday.

RICHARDS, CALLAHAN, GABORIK SHINE AS RANGERS DUMP PENGUINS

Not only are the New York Rangers streaking on home ice, they are picking off some NHL powerhouses in the process.

That trend continued Tuesday night when New York used a four-goal second period to grab control against Pittsburgh and held on for a 4-3 victory over Sidney Crosby and the Penguins -- the Rangers' seventh straight win at Madison Square Garden.

John Mitchell and Brad Richards scored 90 seconds apart in the second,Ryan Callahan joined Gaborik with a goal and assist, and Richards added two assists as New York won its 10th in 12 games overall. The four goals in the period matched a season high, done three previous times -- including twice in three games.
