The New York Rangers (9-3-3) defeated the Carolina Hurricanes (5-8-3) by the score of 5-1, tonight. For a boxscore and recap go to Yahoo! Sports.
...most fun I've had watching this team in a long time. Everything is clicking right now. Heck they even scored a power play goal tonight.
...Avery proved tonight he can still be an effective player in this league if he uses his speed. Now it's up to him to have this type of performance on a consistant basis forcing Torts into giving him more ice time. BTW, Rangers still undefeated since his recall.
...you literally saw a monkey come off Dubinsky's back with that goal.
...great job by Girardi getting our All Star write-in campaign started off on the right foot.
...wonder if TSN still thinks Richards is an early season bust after that performance.
...Gaborik went pointless tonight but this is the best we've seen him play in a Rangers uniform. And he's scored 42 goals for the Rangers so that's saying alot.
...everytime Rosen mentioned Hurricane defenseman McBain's name I couldn't help but think of the Simpsons character.
...lots of credit goes to Torts. He's finally got his team with his type of players and it's working.
...oh yeah, Hank was kind of awesome tonight.
...beyond impressed with this make shift defensive unit that has now held opponents to just nine goals during this six game win streak.
...off until Tuesday night when the Rangers visit the Fishsticks.
QUOTES (via Blueshirts United):
"Six in a row is great, but we can't be satisfied. That's what we talked about coming into the game, youcan't let off the gas pedal just because you've strung some games together. Keep your confidence, stay confident with the wins, but just keep trying to approach every game the same."
"(Brad Richards) made a great look and I had a decent shot---not anything crazy, but more getting it in the right place in the right time. It was a really good pass and Brad is a great player, but that's a play we are looking for. The seam play, when guys come up the half-wall, it's up to the guy on the weak side---where I was---to get open to create a lot of confusion for the penalty kill."

Torts post game...
Couple of thoughts about last night's game. First, thought this team played a GREAT game, they are clicking on all cylinders and their on-ice chemistry looks good. Thought Richards and Gaborik played great games, Richards makes a 6.5 million dollar play when he stole that puck from Ward. I also took note when Boyle crashed the crease, pushing everyone into the net, Byfuglien tried it unsuccessfully, but looks like Boyle executed it correctly. About Ward, if you are a hurricanes fan I think you have to be concerned about his play, he took a real swipe at Dubinsky on the non-call tripping, slashed Boyle very hard twice when he crashed the net, and completely gave up on the 5th goal when Richards stole it.
If the guys that are contributing - the GAS line, Cally, Richards, Hank and Girardi - can keep it up and we can get a little more production from Dubi, Fedotenko, and McDonagh, and a lot more from Boyle, Prust, Avery, and Del Zotto (I don't really expect anything from Christensen at this point, after waiting around for a couple years I know what he's good for), this should be a very successful team moving forward. They got their work cut out though. It's tough to get everyone producing together and it tends to be a transient kind of thing. This is a good group though, and I like their chances of hitting those strides this season. Hopefully Staal comes back healthy at some point and makes the team that much better. It remains to be seen whether Kevin's boy Wolski will be a difference maker. I'll be glad to give him another crack at it though.
Love the McBain comment! As well throughout the game running in my head was Superintendent Chalmers (or Supernintendo Chalmers as per Ralph WIggum) saying, "SKINNER!!!!!!"
We should come up with an all NHL Simpsons team!
How is one of Dubinsky's celebration photos not the lead image? http://lnk.nu/d.yimg.com/1uff.jpg That had to be the most satisfying part of the game...even the assistant coach walked up to Tortorella and was like... "come on!"
I can't decide who I'm more psyched for Avery Girardi or Dubinsky ..... Wait it's Avery. He admits that he needs to play every game like he did tonight - let's hope being demoted was the motivator he needed to get back on track. Drawing penalties not taking them, skating hard and getting a point. Dubinsky was skating so well tonight the open net was not a gift but a product of his hard work. Still Seeing Girardi score the game winner was awesome!
They now have only 2 games in the next 11 days which is actually their most idle stretch of the season and that includes the Europe trip and the all star break. As hot as they are now I wish they were busier at the moment, not to mention the hockey withdrawal I'll be suffering, but I suppose they should take advantage of this time since they play 24 games in the last 38 days of the season which is as busy a stretch as I can ever remember.
Avery had a great game, that goal was filthy, nothing makes me happier then seeing him score. He drew penalties was great (as always) along the boards, chirpink away. So happy for dubi. Hank honestly could have had a shutout, dont the goal he gave up was meant to go 5 hole. Lots of people got well deserved points tonight. Gotta love McD joining the offence and love girardi having a great offensive year. MSG was rockin tonight. Love this team.
@CraiginCanada , I've probably seen less than a dozen Simpsons episodes in my life, yet I know the McBain character! I thought of that during the game too. Hilarious.
@_Jack C'mon Jack I think you've been reading this blog long enough to know why the Avery image is the lead. To satisfy you I have created a post solely to Dubi's celebration that will post later this morning.
@chrisD , man, I hope it worked too. Torts cut him down. Now he's happy to build him back up if he plays within himself and within the team system. Avery got rewarded with some more ice time during the game. I know he can be this type of a player on a regular basis if he just commits to the team.
Avery has that left-handed wrist shot that he'll fire at the net from the left wing. Two seasons ago it was going in, now he's trying to find the back of the net. But his teammates need to look out for that shot because when he misses it comes back out, up the right side, along the boards. It's predictable to me now, it should be for his teammates as well. Let's keep that puck in, fellas.
@chrisD Dubinsky. There is way more stock within the Rangers organization in Dubinsky than Avery.
@nyny6464 , I hear you. I hope they can stay focused and keep building on the lessons they've learned and the game they've established over these last six. They've come a long way since throwing away that 4-1 lead to lose to Ottawa. Let's keep at it.
@ChrisP Agreed that Ponikarovsky was not going five hole. Looked like he flubbed the shot and it threw Hank off.
@KevinDeLury Seems like those are the only things that beat henny these days. Forgot to mention the GAS line. The fact gabbi didnt score is crazy.
@ChrisP@KevinDeLury , gotta see Gaby start putting some more of these in. He's really skating great and is so strong on the puck right now. The same goes for Dubi, everything I just said about Gaby, though Gaby creates better chances for himself and others. I really hope we can build on this Tuesday night. It seems a long way off.
