The New York Rangers (13-5-3) defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins (14-7-4) by the score of 4-3, tonight. For a boxscore and recap go to Yahoo! Sports.
...i'm really trying not to get too excited about this team, but I can't. These last two wins have me thinking this could be a very special season.
...what a game from Gaborik, but you know he's going to hear it big time from his teammates about missing that empty net.
...Richards has been everything and more so far this season. There I said it.
...you think the scouting report was glove side high on Fleury?
...seriously, how was Christensen on the Rangers roster ahead of Hagelin and Mitchell? Those two have been a revelation since being called up.
...speaking of being re-called, Rangers are 10-2 since the Avery re-call. "The Grate One" again proves why he is so important in a game like this.
...by far best game of the season for the third defensive pair of Woywitka and Eminger. Really liked Eminger jumping Vitale after he got into it with Hank.
...why can't the Rangers score 5-on-3?
...for some reason Callahan wasn't himself after the Rangers returned from Europe as he wasn't playing his aggressive style of hockey. But since the Sharks game this could be the best he's played as a Ranger. And that's saying a lot.
...game high 27 minutes of ice time Del Zotto.
...Crosby held goalless courtesy of Dan Girardi.
...Rangers won 40 of 57 faceoffs tonight. Could you have ever imagined that last season?
...penalty kill kept the Rangers in it early.
QUOTES (via Blueshirts United):
"Obviously we have to take care of home ice, especially in division games it's huge. We have been confident at home. And for me it's new, it's great to be in front of these fans, and it's great to be picking up these wins, for sure. I talked about it all summer, it's fun to be in a hockey environment---no disrespect to the other places I played at---this is a little different. It's Original Six with bitter rivalries."
"I think this shows we are on the right track. We are doing a lot of good things. We start with hard work, but then we have guys making some really good plays here, and we have four lines going. The last three games have been a really good boost to our confidence."
"It's cool. It's really amazing actually. Hockey is a game of ups and downs, but right now it's certainly an up. It's great to strap on my skates and put my gear on and go out on the ice here. I have a blast, and am having so much fun right now. I just want to keep it going."

There was SO MUCH going on- esp in 2nd period- 6 goals- 4 NYR- One Pens disavowed- Lundquist gets 2 min penalty- Gaborik -RIchards- Callahan all scoring- Hagelin/ Mitchell kick in- Rangers scored on the PP It shows they are progressing and its EXCITING Hockey!! Go Rangers!
Get excited about Hagelin. This kid is the real deal. That was an on-target comment about the faceoffs; I noticed that Richards seemed to be winning them effortlessly.
why does giannone must alway hate on the hat?? great game. kevin, you called it hagelin is a stud. wow.
If you're not excited about this team then you may need CPR!! Come on, it's been way too long since the Rangers have had a legit winning team. Personally, I feel no sense if impending doom with this team as I have in the past with others. Believe in Blue!!!!
I had stated elsewhere that I believed the recent win streak was something of a mirage -- a belief reinforced by the lame efforts in FLA and Montreal -- because most of the teams were mediocre and San Jose was at the end of a long road trip. I further believed that the real test would be against teams like Philly and Pittsburgh. Well, I can't tell you how thrilled I am with recent events and clearly this team is coming together and it is just so damned exciting to watch the kids step up. You have to now wonder what this team is capable of if others -- Dubi, are you listening -- can play up to their contracts, and if they can fix that awful PP (yes, I know they scored a couple of goals, but it still stinks). This truly is an exciting time.
"i'm really trying not to get too excited about this team.." Come on man they beat the Caps, Flyers and Pens...get excited.
biggest problem I saw with the 5 on 3 was that they were getting too close to the net which made it easier for the Pens to defend
great analysis kevin. i agree with all your points. i'm trying to contain my excitement here but it's not easy. what a huge win last night was and what an awesome roll we've been on.
How in the world does ratface Kennedy get away with coming out of the penalty box to fight Avery and KEEPING HIS VISOR ON? There aught to be a rule.
Spot on with the comments. Besides the obvious, I think AA had a really good game. Dubi played well (Even though he is not producing) , although he is now a very high priced 4th line defensive forward. Bigfoot looks ready to score playing between the "new kids." Other teams are going to have to show respect for that line also. We are still not firing on all cylinders, and we are winning. These past three games were the measuring stick, and we came out "taller, and still growing." Think of the possibilities if Boyle, Dubi, and AA begin scoring like they ought to. Only negative to this game is that we had the opportunity to put the Pens away, and we missed it. The 5 on 3's should have left the Pens out in the cold. Was hoping to see Gabby get the EN for fantasy stats. Great game, much to look forward too. Going on a road trip next week, going to catch the Rangers in Tampa, then to NYC for 2 games at MSG. LGR!!
wow, great, great win!
Hagelin just keeps rollin', gonna be hard to get him out of the lineup, so fast, and smart. Rangers cant give up a goal with 6 secs left in the period after going up 4-1, that was a big letdown that almost caught up to them. Damn DirecTV went out here with seven minutes to go in the game ( a little sleet?, c'mon man), had to follow the scoreboard online, wasn't happy at all, but the family enjoyed the quiet.
I especially enjoyed the pensblog comments thread, they were all whining about the referees, which I thought takes no small amount of delusion and balls given how well they've been treated over the years.
I......wow, its really hard not to get excited about this team, obviously a playoff contender in years past, really seem to have found their groove this season and are still just as gritty and as last year. My one concern, I wonder if they have the skill depth that other teams such as Pittsburgh and Washington have, but I think as long as Hagelin, Callahan, Stepan and Anisimov continue to produce at these rates, they should be fine. They really need to get Dubinsky going though, I think Tortorella just needs to saddle up and give him 20 minutes a game. Put him back on the wing with Richards and Callahan and just wait for it to click.
Hagelin is a stud.
Anyone think Anisimov should have had a goal or two? He seemed a little off to me in his game around the net, but still played well below the hashmarks on the walls.
Man that slash on Cally in front of the net was dirty. I HATE the Penguins.
Looking good! Gotta keep it up the east is so tight.
<3 What a game. would like to see dubi do something. Gabbi missing the open net was just like an AHHHH moment, even though he was filthy tonight. I thought he should have shot it earlier on that one chance that was deflected away. Avery was Avery and it was marvelous. 5 on 3......it could have just been killing time, but wouldnt you rather have a two goal lead rather then a one goal lead with less time? Other then that great game.
Now that's what I call resilience Kevin :)! I agree hard not to get excited. I do have a problem with how Dubinsky is being handled though... I think he's being driven into a hole by torts...yes, he's not playing at his best, but is giving him virtually no pp time the way to go?
@gravity He consistently rips on the hat....DUMB.
@traderserge Come on, enjoy it. Don't be Woody Allen.
@ScottPilutik It seemed like the refs were favoring the pens last night, or that's the way it seemed at the game. Awful.
@ScottPilutik so true
@ScottPilutik Loved those guys invading the blog today. Hysterical.
I agree about Dubinsky ... I like Feds but to me Dubinsky is the bigger threat if he can get going...when that line was together earlier in the season none of them (Dubinsky, Richards or Calli) were playing well... Now you have Calli and Richards taking off.. I think it makes sense to put them back together
@Stepanzeebridge don't forget the two dirty interference plays by 44 (pushing stick blade at the back of Cally's calves = slewfoot to me). refs called the 3rd infraction a penalty, finally! not sure how they missed the first trip and slash right in front of the net.
@Stepanzeebridge And of course it was Cooke who slashed him.
@jrj2109 Yes, tough for him to get going offensively with no pp time while playing on the fourth line. But he has to find a way to get it done.
@bernardkost Because of the big win I decided to leave him alone tonight, but he better figure a way to get his offense going.
@IMLazzaro Those two stats just jumped off the page at me.
@jrj2109 Fedotenko has looked nice on the left with Richards and Cally, but Dubinsky is far more skilled and a somewhat faster, so I'd really like to see that group of three stick, would make for a very nice, balanced top two lines.
@KevinDeLury I think we need a "get Dubi going "campaign"
