Derek Stepan extended his IIHF World Championship point streak with an assist, but it wasn't enough as Team USA fell to Switzerland 5-3 in its final qualification-round game today.
The Americans had already clinched a berth in the tournament quarterfinals with their win over France on Saturday along with help.
Team USA will now travel to the Slovak capital of Bratislava to open the quarterfinals against the Czech Republic on Wednesday.
Stepan finished his afternoon with five shots in 17:38 of ice time, while Chris Kreider played on the third line and saw 8:15 of ice time and McDonagh had two shots on goal in 15:38.
Stepan now has 2g, 6a in the tournament.
...it hasn't always been pretty for this young American team, but they deserve a lot of credit for getting to the quarterfinals. Looking forward to Wednesday's game.
Meanwhile, Marian Gaborik had an assist as the host Slovaks snapped a four-game slide as they defeated Denmark 4-1 in their final qualification-round game, but the victory came after Slovakia had already been eliminated from medal contention as they completed the tournament with a 2-4-0 record.
Gaborik finished the tournament with 2g, 1a.
...let's hope scoring a couple of goals will get Gabby in a positive mindset going into next season.
