"That's five defensemen, with the Rangers facing a decision on whether to make a $2.1 million qualifying offer to retain Matt Gilroy's rights as a restricted free agent – a decision made harder by Gilroy's solid finish, but $2.1 million still is a lot for a third-pair defenseman on a team trying to free up cap space. Will Pavel Valentenko, Tomas Kundratek, Jyri Niemi or 2010 first-round pick Dylan McIlrath be ready for the big time next season?"
...not so sure Del Zotto is a definite to make the team out of camp. I'll be rooting for him because I think he has the tools to turn the Rangers dreadful power play around I'm just not confident he's found his game yet. Hope I'm wrong.
...i think the Rangers need to make a decision on Gilroy or Eminger. Can't bring both back. And whoever they choose will need to take a serious pay cut.
...as far as the prospects who may surprise in camp, I'm really looking forward to getting another chance to see Valentenko. He just barely missed making the team last year. May have made it if Sauer didn't need to go through waivers to be sent down. So he could end up splitting the 6th/7th spot with either Eminger or Gilroy. For the second year in a row it should be an interesting battle.
...one thing I'd be against is bringing someone in. I think they have very deverse options within the organization so they won't have to look elsewhere.
I am hoping they trade some of these guys in a bigger package with our 1st round pick for edmontons no 1 so the Rangers can take Ryan Nugent Hopkins. He is supposed to be he second coming of Joe Sakic. Edmontons pick is available as they need players not draft choices.
I don't want Gilroy back or Eminger. I would honestly rather see Mcilrath. Though I don't think he will make the team for nearly certain I think he surprises some people. Him and MDZ would make a great pairing. One can only play offense and the other can only play defense.
No way is Gilroy worth 2.1M/year. I'm not opposed to him coming back, but not at that price. We'll have to see how much $ we have left after the other more important signings this summer.
Would love to see Valentenko's booming shot from the point on the PP, with Gilroy as the 7th man at like $850,000ish
Don't think McIlrath will make the big boys club out of camp for another year or 2.
I see the top four plus gilly and mdz. and sauer and mcdonagh will have to be split up to pair with gilroy and delzotto. sauer/del zotto and mcdonagh/gilroy maybe.
who i'd like to see is McIlrath but I'm pretty certain he won't make the big club next year. though i would love to see him clearing the crease.
mdz - not certain about him
gilroy - i guess he may have to be the odd man out though i do like him
eminger - i don't think he will be on the team next year
@KingBadaBing From what I've heard McIlrath isn't close to being NHL ready. He's two years away.
@AndyS you realize Valentenko has a grand total of 1 power play goal in 140 AHL games, right? He might end up being a nice player someday, but he's no Shea Weber.
@AndyS It's funny I pretty much wrote off Gilroy coming back next season all year but now I really think he ends up back with the Rangers.
@Hiphipjorge We won't see McIlrath for at least two years.
@AlanPudding I like Gilroy's offense. So I wouldn't mind seeing him back. I think the key will be of Del Zotto can find his game.
@cb1 Shea Weber?? You're talking about a Norris Trophy Finalist, I 100% fully don't expect Valentenko to come within 500 miles of Weber. Having said that, have you seen the guy take a slap shot? Or did you just go look at hockey-reference.com?
@KevinDeLury In full agreement. Gilroy showed flashes of Second Pairing potential during the season, but nothing to wow me. Thought he had to go in late February/the trade deadline, then the playoffs happened and now I feel like he has a role, for a limited price tag.
Mr. Eminger provided a solid bit of 'Jam', as Torts calls it, but Sauer really turned on the physicality and made Eminger dispensable. Love that kid, has a nasty side I love in my D-Men.
@KevinDeLury It would be nice... they would be a great combo.
