"...I asked McDonagh if he'd heard the Madison Square Garden chanting "Potvin sucks" at every game. McDonagh said he had heard it but didn't know the meaning.
He said he figured it had to do something with "the goaltender."
I told him, no, it was not that Felix Potvin sucks. It was that Denis Potvin sucks and that it came from the Islanders defenseman putting the Rangers' Ulf Nilsson out for the season with a hip check on Feb. 25, 1979.
Of course, that was almost 10 years and five months before McDonagh was born."
...i hate to kill the Rangers on this, but shouldn't they give the rookies a little course on the Rangers history and the chants they may hear at MSG. I'd love to hear McD's thoughts on Dancin' Larry.
...nice try by McD with the Felix Potvin guess. At least he was an Islander.
Guess my sample size is too small, because the only game I've been at this year was the 7-2 smackdown of the Islanders. Plenty of (warranted, at that game) 'Potvin Sucks' cheers, but also plenty of other noise, despite not a full crowd (blizzard fallout).
Granted, the 7 goals, plus the 40% discount on merchandise they gave everyone who braved the snow, helped, but I digress...
Totally agree with the "Goal" song, but the thing is they gotta score a goal first.
It's partly the responsibility of the fans to raise the team when they're down.
Goal song only happens once the team have scored. The Garden needs a chant or two to encourage the team to perform, or in some cases just to let them know they're there.....
Unfortunately, this kinda goes back to Brooks' article about the lack of "real fans" at the Garden. I've been to at least a dozen games this year and the only time the crowd seems to "get into it" is during the (most of the time weak) Potvin Sucks chant. It's funny at first I guess.
I can't remember the last time I heard a solid "Avery" chant or sustained "Let's go Rangers!" chant. Even Rick Carpiniello wrote a small piece a few months ago where he discussed how quiet the Garden has become. Quite sad.
If the Garden faithful would balance the Potvin Sucks chant with some good old fashion passion and applause I wouldn't be so sick of Potvin Sucks.
It's kinda unique to the Rangers, no?
What would you prefer, the all too generic, "Let's Go Rangers".
Being from the UK, where each soccer teams have dozens of their own chants and songs I like that the Rangers have something that's theirs.
So, instead of Potvin Sucks, can anyone think of n alternative the fans can get behind. Pref not Sweet Caroline......
I think they should just kill the chant all together. McDonagh isn't only person who doesn't know what the "Potvin Sucks" chant means. By now most Ranger fans chant it just to chant it.
@GaryGovan We do have the goal song which is pretty awesome.
@Isleshockeyblog Much as I hate to say it, I couldn't agree with you more. (As Kevin well knows,) I think the chant is outdated and often inappropriate. I mean, when we play the Isles, cool, chant away. But when we are playing other teams it borders on retarded.
@Isleshockeyblog The Rangers/Isles rivalry is going by the way side and now you want to get rid of this classic chant. Sure most of the young fans don't know who Potvin or Nilsson are, but all they have to is a Google search and viola they are in the know.
