"While both are similar in terms of what they bring to the team in terms of their talent, what differentiates Dubinsky from Callahan, is that the Anchorage, Alaska native is a FAR more emotional player on the ice. He's more animated. More intense and certainly knows how to celebrate after a goal...especially a key goal. That's the kind of fire that lights up, not only The Garden Faithful, but his teammates as well."
...Berlett brings up a real interesting point here. Rangers fans have just endured three years of an unemotional captain in Drury, whose stoic approach was viewed by many as a detriment to the team. So why would Rangers fans embrace the similar leadership qualities of Callahan?
...the Rangers absolutely need to show more passion on the ice and naming Dubinsky as captain may be the answer.
...having said that, he is known to take some ill-advised penalties and you have to wonder if his emotions would ever get the best of him. I think fans have some reservations about Dubinsky based on his contract dispute two years ago that may be exasperated even further with more contract complications this summer.
...i've been saying all along that Callahan should be the next captain of the Blueshirts and I'm sticking with it. Although Dubi has to be wearing an "A" this season.
...what do you think?
my personal opinion... neither... For me it would be Staal. He's missed seven games in four seasons while the other two have missed a few more in the same time. Staal is also racking up minutes and played 25mpg last season with Dubi and Cally around 20 (which is not bad either). Also, considering Dubi's style of play, he had 100 penalty minutes last season. As a captain, would he look to lower that number and if so would he be as effective? My opinion: Let Dubi and Cally play their heart out, as they have so far, and put the A's on their jerseys. Let Staal captain the team, at least 'til brother Eric arrives from CAR =)
Why cant Lundqvist get the Captaincy? I mean if it has to do with what I read on yahoo answers (lol):
"The role of the Captain, apart from the obvious ones, like pumping up the team, or having the most experience, best player etc. Is that the Captain (And Assistant Captains) are the only ones who can approach and talk to the referee after a stoppage of play. (Most likely to question a call, call a time out, ask for a review of a goal etc.) The Captain must stand outside of a painted half-circle in front of the timekeepers box to ask these questions. The timekeepers box is almost always at the center ice line. Here's where it gets stupid. The rule is, that the Goalie, after a stoppage of play, should not cross the blue line of his own end, except to get equipment repairs or a shot of water at his own bench. This eliminates his ability to go over to the timekeepers bench to ask questions of the referee. This rule is hardly enforced anymore, but it's there. Hence, the Goalie is hardly adequate to fulfill his duties as an on-ice Captain."
But why cant the alternate's do that...?
O I also love how dubi wants a piece of crosby so bad thats its literally hilarious to watch when they play . I love dubi and cally but i think cally is the right guy, looking at him play is crazy
he defiantly needs an "A" and can fall into that roll as that "higher alternate" as in him and cally (as they always have had good chemistry) can work together in certain situations and be almost a pair of high leaders. I think though Cally gets the C and dubi and staal get the A's. i think that combo works out well with heart and soul mixed with fire.
Callahan = HEART
Dubinsky = PASSION / FIRE
You really can't go wrong naming either one Capatain and the other an Alternate. My vote would go to the passion/fire guy, because that's the guy you want firing up your team when needed. A guy who lays it on the line and leads by example is great to have, but a guy who gets emotional and fires up the team when they are down is a rare find. I would almost liken it to Messier vs. Ron Francis (BTW, Cally & Dubi are neither of those 2, just for illustration). I vote for Dubinsky!
I posted here a while back why I think Dubi is better for the C, and this was the exact reason. He's willing to do anything to win. He'll fight, he'll score, he'll make a clutch pass (see many Dubi assists to Cally this season). I think his talent and grinding work ethic are very underrated by Rangers fans. With the C I think the Rangers would get even grittier. A little emotion added to your game-plan can make a big difference (see 1980 Olympics). I think the Rangers need some fire in their Captain.
I vote Dubi.
Dubinsky as Captain, no. He assumes way too much responsibility when he shouldn't and he puts way too much pressure on himself to perform that he under-performs. When Cally and Gabby were both out, Duby tried to do wayyyyy too much on his own and pressure got to him. Giving him Captain would do the same. Also, if Duby holds out till training camp again (not saying he will, but if), then he doesn't deserve to wear the C
After Dubinsky dropped both Richards and Ovechkin in fights during 7-0 victories this season, I started to think he is a better fit as captain than Callahan. He also called Crosby a baby.
if the Captain is supposed to embody what the other guys on the team should try to play like, then it should be Callahan.
Dubi and Cally have grown up through the system together. They work off of each other well. I see this carrying over as #24 wearing the C and #17 wearing the A. As much as Dubi brings a fiery personality to the table, its not as if it will disappear if he's picked as the alternate. Callahan brings a level-headedness that will be great with support from his counterpart in Dubinsky.
Cally is somewhat reserved right now, but as soon as he becomes the unquestioned leader of the team I wouldn't be surprised to see him come out of his shell a bit. He's a smart guy and knows what it takes to be a leader. He'll lead by example most of the time and show fire and emotion as the situation dictates.
My only words are to remember that the 'A' stands for Alternate CAPTAIN. Does not carry nearly as much weight, however, still has Captain in it and Dubi can still light a fire if need be. But a true Captain (by my own definition) embodies the qualities of the hockey team he represents ALWAYS, and as CJ posted a bit earlier, the new Rangers work hard every game, every shift, every period, from whistle to whistle, buzzer to buzzer, and that my friends, is Capt'n Cally.
Dubi fights. Dubi sticks up for his teammates. Dubi and Cally other than that are the same. Plus Callahan's interviews sounds exactly like Drury which is very bland and boring. I like Dubi as he is much more vocal.
I think just as long as dubi has a letter on his jersey whether its an A or C, he will have an added responsibility and it will help him thrive throughout his career
Couldnt agree more. Dubinsky needs to concentrate on becoming a more consistent player. Not to say he isn't a leader and one of the more important players on the team, but he still disappears at times during the season. Alternate Captain, yes, but Cally is the captain of this team!
My position on this has been the same since Dubi's rookie season, he is the future captain of this team. I believe that he deserves the C over Cali.
@JohnSikulaIII Canucks tried it with Luongo but didn't work out. I'd rather Lundqvist just focus on stopping the puck not getting on the ref for missed calls. Lundqvist is a leader letter or not so to me it doesn't matter.
@AndyS I think that the qualities that make a great Captain and a great Alternate Captain are quite different. I have an "A" on my jersey, and have had that letter on most of the teams I've played for in my life, but I am not sure I would ever be comfortable wearing the C.
Think about Staal (or example)...most people agree that he was a wonderful choice as an Alternate Captain, but almost no one would say he should wear the "C"...
When it comes to being a great Captain you only need to think about one man, The Captain, himself. Compare Cali or Dubi (or yourself or whoever) to Messier and you will know who should be wearing the "C".
@KingBadaBing Ah, you stole my thunder. Callahans interviews are so cookie cutter. Regardless, I don't think it matters as long as they play their game. I'm also surprised that Staal isn't getting any mention.
@CJ CJ, I also posed this question on Twiiter and Facebook and you are the only person siding with Dubi. And I'm not sure you're wrong.
@KevinDeLury but despite my opinion on this (which I have posted here on the site more than once), I believe that Torts is probably a little more likely to choose Cali. Callahan almost perfectly embodies the game that Torts wants all of his players to play, every shift, every game. Somehow I really see Torts as a "lead by example" kinda guy, and that mean's Cali is his man, but I totally agree with Bruce we need FIRE.
@CJ I love me a fiery Captain, but yes Cally fits better with Torts.
