Bob McKenzie at TSN tweets that with the ownership situation in Dallas not likely to be settled until later in summer, they will not be making a contract offer to Richards.
McKenzie adds that Dallas would be interested in trading exclusive negotiating rights before July 1, but a move would require Richards to waive his NMC.
...your move Mr. Sather.
Scott Cullen at TSN gives us an off-season game plan for the New York Rangers and says this about obtaining Brad Richards...
"In years gone by, the Rangers have made big splashes in free agency, whether it was Redden, Gomez, Drury or Marian Gaborik and the results have been, to be kind, mixed, so while it would be nice to land a top player like Richards, the Rangers can't consider any free agent signing to be a saviour."
...amen. I've been telling anyone who will listen that this team is 2-3 years away with or without Richards. It's too easy to say, "just bring in Richards and we're a Cup contender." A lot of pieces need to fall into place and I'm not sure they're all there right now.
Cullen adds that Brooks Laich, Ville Leino, Alex Tanguay or Simon Gagne may all warrant consideration if Richards can't be lured to Manhattan.
He also goes on to say that Tomas Kaberle, whose value has likely decreased during the postseason, or perhaps Anton Babchuk, who has a big blast from the point, may be targeted to add experience to the Rangers young defensive corps.
...with the Rangers just acquiring Erixon, who is projected to be NHL ready, not sure spending money on a position the Rangers don't need help with is such a smart idea.
I like the Erixon move......we perhaps need to get better for now and the future. Richards is not going to be a difference maker in the short term or long term.. Erixon was liked before by management and he looks like he is NHL ready......now. We need more young players to continue to build and we will be there in 2-3 years.
Who thinks he is a savior? That's a pretty ridiculous conclusion. He's a puzzle piece. An awesome puzzle piece. Call me greedy, but I go to about 15 games a year and I'd be psyched to watch Richards live.
forGET Richards. This isn't a team on the verge of greatness. This is a team that is (wisely) building a strong and full farm system. In a couple of years, this teams' defense will be the envy of the league and you will know which F prospects are keepers. THEN you go out and try to find the right veteran FA pieces to put this team over the edge. Signing Richards now is the sexy thing to do, but in the end I think it would just be lipstick on a pig. The pig of course being the way this organization used to run things. (I hope)
Richards is the easy way out because he's a FA. I sure hope Sather is also looking the trade route with all the young chips the Rangers have. Richards scares me in a Bernie Nicholls kind of way. Nicholls had 10 fantastic first years, then he turned 31 and tailed off dramatically. I'd much rather see sather trade some young talent to get a young stud center. I don't know who, but that's where he could work his trade magic.
If we don't get Richards I could care less. Well maybe not care less but I won't cry my eyes out about it. Still a guy like can fill in the holes for this team nicely but if he doesnt want in no hard feelings.
Yep....ask any Bruins fan if they would like to resign Kaberle!!!! I breathed a sigh of relief when we did not get him at the trade deadline.
How about this for a plan B if we do not get Richards...make an offer to RFA Zach Parise. Some team will (or should) and maybe one that the Devs cannot afford to match.
1. Gaby plays like he did his first year here
2. The kids continue to get better.
3. We get Richards and he performs to expectations
4. We are relatively healthy
Then we are legit contenders.
cullen (not clark) has no clue and shouldnt be putting out this dribble.
"Clark adds that Brooks Laich, Ville Leino, Alex Tanguay or Simon Gagne may all warrant consideration if Richards can't be lured to Manhattan."
laich loves DC and the team. leino im sure wants to stay in philly. tanguay is a washed up joke. simon gagne is one sneeze away from his latest concussion. then, to add insult to injury, mr. no-heart fragile minded rozy PT.2 in kaberle is brought up.
u gotta love the typical crap about prust he writes but fails to mention that he was tied for 3rd in SHG during the regular season...
sheesh. this guy is a clown.
so instead of landing the AAA rated top line center that this team so desperately needs we should look at mid tier FA signings just to sign them?
so...more of the same then?
Richards or GTFO. Nobody is saying he makes us an instant contender, but it helps us jump the queue a few places for sure.
I agree with your last thought. Having both MDZ and Erixon on D makes us have 6 solid D-men. Yes they are young (Girardi being the oldest) but they are still very solid and good. With that said, I think Richard can make a big difference but the signing should only be for 2-3 years not 5-6 that we have seen in the past with Redden or Drury.
Has he been to an NHL conditioning camp? Lots of commenters on http://www.tsn.ca/story/?id=367584 (TSN NHL) are giving him tons of heat for being somewhat of a prima donna. He wants NHL or nothing...even though Calgary said if you don't make the team you can go back to Europe.
The Flames offered him the max contract for a rookie and even gave him a clause that would allow him to go back to Sweden instead of the AHL if he failed to make the Flames this season. They did everything in their power. If this spoiled kid doesn't want to play in the hockey mecca of Canada then I say bye, bye! You cant win with players that dont want to play. While it would have been better to have Erixon who is a top prospect knowing that they were going to lose him to the entry draft the fact that Feaster aquired a solid prospect in Horak and two 2nd round picks is solid. I say they did the best with the situation. "
Very classless move on Erixon`s part, he unproven and dictating terms....I have zero respect and hope he flops. Flames I think you did a god job getting as much as you could for him..... and this from an Oil fan "
The plus side? Lots of Calgary fans are pissed their #1 prospect is gone....
@AnnoyingJoe Do you have goalie for your futuristic dream team?
@cb1 That's a lot of ifs.
@iamthebest I'm just very concerned about giving out another long term expensive contract. When was the last time that's worked out for the Rangers?
@Hiphipjorge RICHARDS IS NOT REDDEN
@Hiphipjorge Not sure Richards would sign a 2-3 year contract. Hearing he wants a long term deal.
@KevinDeLury So then never sign a free agent again? There is a difference between signing the RIGHT free agents and signing the WRONG ones. Drury and Gomez were never top line centers. Richards is. As proven as a 1st line center can be in this league. Richards is going to be a VERY good hockey player for many years. As long as you dont give him an iron clad NMC (a modified one that turns into a NTC later on), it's fine.
@AnnoyingJoe @KevinDeLury @_Jack Well Joe, you certainly live up to your name. Hank is in his prime NOW. He plays 70 games a year and is a goalie that relies on his reflexes and athleticism, not positioning. I dont think he's gonna be a top 5 goalie when he's 34. I want as many shots at a cup with him in his prime as we can get. If we buyout Drury, we should be able to resign all the RFAs and have plenty to give to Richards. After next year Wolski, Avery, EC all come off the books. The cap is expected to go up a few mil this year too. We should still be in good shape to add if needed. Richards is a legit #1 center, Conn Smyth winner, and loves playing for Torts.
Its so cute when the little ones want to jump in to the big pool. ok kiddies, pull out your #2 pencils. Goalie for the dream team? Yes. Henrik. You remember him, right? The dashing 29 year old swede who will be a ripe old 30 next march? When you consider that the two starting goalies in the finals this year are 37 and 32 years old, ole' poppa hank doesn't seem so geriatric, does he? And signing Richards does hamstring the future because his hit on the salary cap will hamper the Rangers' ability to sign effective players when the time is right. Recess! @cb1 @_Jack
@iamthebest I am very much hoping you are correct.
@KevinDeLury Like I said, expect richards to be a very productive player for the majority of his contract. he's gotten better with age.
@iamthebest I have no problem bringing in an in their prime player but to me Richards at age 31 seems to be on the decline of his career.
Now his first two seasons may be great, but what about the 3, 4, 5 or gulp even 6th year. That's my main concern.
@KevinDeLury Furthermore, the role of 1st line center MUST be addressed immediately for the Rangers. We have none in the pipeline so it's either FA or trade.
