Jesse Spector at the Daily News says Wojtek Wolski could be a casualty of the Drury news.
He also gives a few cap scenarios...
With the players they currently have on their roster, including Wade Redden, the Rangers should be a little over $55 million on the summer cap once they make qualifying offers to their restricted free agents. With the 2011-12 cap expected to be between $60-63 million, and the summer cap 10% higher than that, the Rangers would have room to operate.
The complication in that scenario would be that if the Rangers were to make a big-money acquisition (read: Brad Richards), they would be hamstrung with regard to actually re-signing their restricted free agents.
...this would be a double wammy for me as I was looking forward to a full season of Wolski.
Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports the Rangers will be unable to buy out the final season of Chris Drury's contract because of a degenerative condition in the captain's left knee that apparently will render him medically unable to play next season.
While Drury has yet to file the necessary paperwork, sources report he plans to do so. The Rangers could file a grievance against Drury, but Brooks says that is a remote possibility.
The Rangers could get a long term injury exemption of Drury's $7.05 salary if he is placed on LTI and the Rangers go that far over the salary cap meaning if the cap is $62.5 million the team would have to get to $69.5 million (including Drury) before the season-opener in Stockholm to get the benefit. Which isn't a very likely scenario even with signing Brad Richards.
Drury underwent arthroscopic surgery in February that sidelined him for 27 games before he returned for the final game of the regular season against the Devils.
...we officially need a Naslund-retirement from Drury. Wouldn't that be the right thing to do?
This might actually be a good thing. The only issue I still see is with the summer cap b/c Redden's salary comes back on.
I don't know if I'm understanding completely but it only seems to be an issue with the summer cap b/c we have to include redden's cap hit. Once the season starts we just put drury on ltir and we have 7 mill in cap space so what's the big deal?
I don't pretend to understand the nuances of the behind-the-scenes workings of an NHL team, but really Chris Drury? For all your accomplishments, you really want to be seen as a petulant child to end your career?
Because that's how it seems. If the Rangers informed him of a pending buyout, it looks like his plans to 'file paperwork' are a means to lay claim to money and to pointedly screw the Rangers, especially given him playing the very end of the season despite this apparently horrific knee injury. Either way, he's not playing as a Ranger next year - why be a dick and force the issue?
On a related note, Markus Naslund? Classy way to go.
HE PLAYED THE LAST 6 GAMES OF THE RANGERS SEASON! If Drury doesn't retire and pulls this crap...... I don't even know where to begin. THIS IS OUR CAPTAIN! He would be so classless if he didn't just call it quits.
why cant the ranger cut a deal with drury to retire and give him a front office job. Pay him the 5 million. If he goes on LTI, they gotta give him the money anyway. Let him do some scouting, make a few appearances.
Chris just pull a naslund
Could the rangers use Redden's salary to get to the $69.5 million, get the injury relief, then send his contract to Hartford? That way they get both contracts off the books. Don't know the rules but just a thought.
@Rog I think his salary only comes off if they get the exemption. There's a little confusion there. At least on my end.
@cjbnyr Can't catch a break.
@Rog OK I'm wrong. The scenario Brooks talks about is only regarding the summer cap. So yes once he gets on LTI in Sept. his salary will come off the books. As Spector says in his piece the Rangers could wait to sign some RFAs until September when both Redden (Whale) and Drury (LTIR) come off the books.
Can't get Redden's salary off the books in the summer and Rangers probably still won't hit $69.5. If Drury goes on LTI in Sept. he will come off books then.
