D, Tomas Kaberle -- The 33-year-old is perhaps the most interesting free agent on the market in terms of what he's worth and where he'll land. He's coming off a sound offensive season with 47 points in 82 games and now has a Stanley Cup on his resume after the Leafs dealt him to the Bruins at the trade deadline. But he received diminished minutes with the Bruins. Will a team view him as a 25-minute workhorse or an 18-minute player who can quarterback a power play? He could land absolutely anywhere, but how about he comes to New York to add experience and offense to the Rangers' blue line? Best guess: He signs in New York.
...obviously I'd need to see the contract, but if they can get him for dirt cheap, why not? If he can regain his form on the power play he could be a nice weapon.
...h/t to reader Josh M.
Lozo also thinks you know who will end up in New York saying this...
"With July 1 just days away, it seems there are only three things in life that are guaranteed -- death, taxes and Brad Richards signing a lucrative free-agent contract with the New York Rangers."
...can I take death?
Even with his poor playoff performance, Kaberle is still going to command $4M+ on the free agent market. Unless we're not planning on giving Erixon or MDZ a chance to play, then this makes NO sense.
I don't get all the negativity surrounding the Richards deal in this site. Yes, I am aware that any objections are based purely on a monetary concern, and there is no doubt Richards will command a high salary, but the guy is STUD first line center.
For the past several seasons, we have had one glaring hole on our roster: top line play-making center to pair with Gaborik. And now, one with a cup, experience under Torts, and extremely high production in recent years is ready and willing and we have the room to make it work and everyone is making it seem like this is Brashear coming in.
Without a guy like Richards, Gaborik (and the money we pay him) are going to waste. With Richards, this team will have a legit top line and the depth that has made us so strong in recently. Bring Richards in and we will see Gabby produce, we will see the power play click, and we will see the Rangers score some pretty goals on a nightly basis and win more hockey games. That doesn't come free, there's no perfect world out there where we get everything we want; the idea is to build the best club both now and in the future and I don't think the Richards move upsets that balance.
He's coming, so sit back, embrace it and enjoy what he brings...cause we need it.
Can you say useless? I might say a considerably cheaper guy like Anton Babchuk to lighten the load for MDZ and Erixon but this guy forget about it. He wants a Richards contract this guy.
Ew! I wouldn't sign him for zero dollars. There are PLENTY of young defensemen on this team - all he would do is prevent one of them from developing. Not to mention that if they do sign Richards they have their PP QB. Sign Eminger as a veteran D man and call it a day.
I prefer the growing pains of seeing the kids through... I don't see Kaberle coming cheap especially the way the market is shaping up to be inflated.
@Scott_from_Jersey Not so sure Richards is a stud. Guy puts up nice numbers, but only averages 20-25 goals per year and hasn't gotten his team to the playoffs the last three years.
@TheAveryRule ***Comment of the Day***
@jasonshyer I'm still holding out hope they don't get Richards but yes if they do Kaberle makes less sense. Was only thinking as a 7th.
@mavanco Pretty sad that Kaberle wouldn't come cheap. Who the heck would pay that guy?
@IcyCup I hear you but if the Rangers can get him dirt cheap a vet presence back there might be nice.
Well he's not a score-first player, he's a set up man and Gabby is the pure finisher which is why he's such a nice compliment. And while he hasn't gotten it done in Dallas, that team is in shambles.
They spend no money and have very little talent around him (Louie Ericksson is good and thats about it). He is uninspired and so is that franchise, I think coming to NY will do wonders for his game. He has veteran leadership qualities and has hoisted the trophy before, and he seems to have a nice rapport with avery based on those vacation pictures... @KevinDeLury
@KevinDeLury Unfortunately any team desperate to hit the cap floor... 3 mil for Kopecky? You've got to be kidding me.
I agree, Kaberle could be useful, but only for the right price. What kind of contract would he expect to command? What is reasonable for us?
I wouldn't mind another season of Gilroy the odd 7 man, if he would sign for cheap, but he's kind of an x-factor. Does he get dealt?
Looking forward to having Del Zotto back and interested whether Erixon will make the jump. It's going to be an interesting off-season.
