Spezza, Stastny Plan B for Rangers

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

spezzaSteve Zipay at Newsday reports that people familiar with the Brad Richards situation say that if the Rangers are outbid for the former Dallas center they could try to make a deal for either Jason Spezza or Paul Stastny.

Spezza, who had 21g, 36a last season, is under contract until 2015 at $7 million per year, while Stasny had 22g, 35a last year and is under contract until 2014 at $6.6 millioon per.

...while I hate both of those contracts, if I had to pick one I'd go with Stastny due to age and more cap friendly. Either way it will cost the Rangers a young NHL player as well as a top prospect.

Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record adds that because the incoming draft class is thin on difference-makers it could lead to a more active trade market.

Both Zipay and Gross also touch on the Rangers preparation leading up to Friday's draft.

those contracts are just as bad as the one Richards will command, plus we'll be trading away the farm for them. Go for Richards, and if not, then stay put.

@cb1 Yeah bringing either one of them in is a double wammy.

Jeeze Kev, what top-line talent center do you want on this team for 2011-12? You seem to poo-poo everyone... Richards, Spezza, Stastny...

@_Jack I just think right now the Rangers need to give themselves some cap space not put themselves up against it again. I don't feel this team is ready to win with any of those guys, so I feel it's a waste.

The one guy I have said I'd be on board with is Weiss. Cheap, only two years left on deal and in his prime. Will have to give up something, but I think will be worth it.

Here's what I would do for stastny and this is a final offer end of the line. This years first pick grachev and girardi. That's it. Day by day girardi is becoming more expendable and his stock is very high at the moment. Plus this draft is looking more and more like a throwaway.
