"It seems he got in a little bit of a rut," Clark said. "Going to the minors is never a bad idea. I know players don't like it. He clearly would have been back up (to the NHL) but, two or three games in (the second time Del Zotto was sent to Connecticut), he breaks his thumb. The games he did play down there, he was a dominant player in the AHL. He'll come back. He's a competitive kid. When you can find a guy who can move a puck like that, there's always a job in the NHL. I clearly think it hurt Gaborik. This was the guy hitting him for a lot of those breakaway passes. Gabby never got into tip-top shape. And when he came back, Michael was not into the groove of his game."
...pretty interesting to hear Clark blame Gabby's struggles last season on Del Zotto.
...i hope Clark is right re: MDZ comeback. Rangers need Del Zotto to get back to the offensive form he showed his rookie season. God knows the power play needs his help.
Clark will be taking part in a live video chat from Minnesota today at 6pm which can be watched at Blueshirts United.
Gaborik's biggest problem is that other teams can key on him and not worry about offense coming from anywhere else. It wouldn't matter much if he had MDZ giving him home runs because there would still be a shadow or 2 on him so he wouldn't have the room. Until there's another offensive threat on his line, that will keep happening. A Leetch-esque MDZ would certianly help, but there needs to be another forward as well...not a superstar just a scorer to make teams pay for shadowing Gabby. Prospal was that guy the year before, but thtere was nobody last year.
Alot of gabbys goals and good chances came off great feeds from MDZ....gabby need the perfect pass to get off his perfect shot...he was too busy this season trying to bring up the puck and trying to beat people 1 on1
Sorry I cannot accept MDZ as why Gaborik did not score as there is an entire team out there and Gaborik was not scoring before or after MDZ.
If we are to accept this then are we supposed to also accept that if MDZ does not make the team; then Gaborik will have another bad season?
They will not qualify Gilroy and allow him to become a UFA. Gilroy IMO would have to drop down to where Sauer is (about 600 G) to stay a NYR
If MDZ and Erixon both make the team then think that they will split up one of the experienced pair to cover for the rookie Erixon and the defensively weak MDZ
Yeah, I'm counting on DZ's return. And I thought it was very interesting that Clark connected DZ to Gabby's drop in production. When I wrote-up my report card I said Gabby wasn't getting that breakout pass anymore because he had added defensive responsibilities. I stand by that, but I won't argue w Clark that the loss of DZ's long pass was a factor.
If MDZ does come back, is this the defensive pairings??
MDZ will come back. He'll be back better than ever. I made a bet with a friend he scores 15 or more goals this next season.
Del Zotto has a ton at stake this season as it is last of his EL, He lost close to a million in salary and bonus money last season.
If he makes the NYR he can earn up to 1.1 million and a QO for 2012-13
But if he is in Hartford he only makes 65,000 no bonus and the label of being a bust on his resume.
Nope no pressure at all
@amadnick Good observation.
@TheProspectpark Not having Del Zotto at the top of his game could be one of the reasons but agreed definitely not the sole reason.
@Chris M , that's "are these the defensive pairings." Sorry, I couldn't help it. I know the Rangers Blog is no place for grammar and spelling lessons. What I really want to say is that it's anybody's guess with that last pair. We don't even know what's in store for Gilroy. Will he be back? If so he will likely have to agree to a pay cut. And then there's all the Defensive prospects. Maybe Pashnin takes a spot from somebody. Otherwise, I'm guessing you got the first two pairs right. It will be an interesting camp though.
@AnnoyingJoe Didn't realize how much influence Gordie Clark had.
@TheProspectpark No better incentive to step up your game than money.
@KevinDeLury Money, the Per Diem, flying over riding a bus. Life as a Ranger vs life as a Whale if I was Del Zotto I would kill anyone trying to send me to the AHL
