Matheson cites the 31-year-old's tight relationship with John Tortorella and the Rangers desperate need for a center as his reasoning.
...calling Stephen Weiss, Stephen Weiss please pickup the nearest courtesy phone.
...can you imagine how bad that contract will look in year five? It'll make Drury's look like a bargain.
Meanwhile, Jesse Spector at the Daily News reports that the Toronto Maple Leafs will make a big play for Richards, who made $7.8 million last year, this offseason as well.
If it end up being long-term, this contract will be heavily frontloaded. I think the overall cap hit will reduce to somewhere around 6 or 5. There's no way I could see him making a cap hit of 7 million at age 38. Even 5 mil is really pushing it at that age. Sather will get something done reasonably or won't make a deal at all. I think Richards sees the Rangers as a cup contender and a stable organization, which is why he seems to be leaning this direction. In either regard, there will have to be some big compromise on both ends to get this done.
All I want is for Sather to sign all of our returning FA's currently on the team. Then he can decide weather or not throwing that kind of money Richards way is worth it ,(Which I personally believe isnt).
I'm in favor of getting Richards, but not at that price/length. If Toronto or LA are willing to go 49M/7yr, god bless them. The only way i would give him 7 years is if the cap hit was closer to 5M per. I'd be ok with 7.5M per for 3, or 6.5 for 5.
Wow, what a buzz kill. Since you know everything, what are the rangers gonna do with the 15th pick?
Grew up hating the team? Are YOU serious??
He hates offer sheets? I hate my second job but I still put in the hours. Thanks for the insight. Also, who is glen targeting as a free agent forward? Any truth to him trying to make a deal for Suter?
How about some out of the box thinking. A top 5 center is not as impotant if you have a left and right wing that can score. How about going after someone like Parise and then filling the Center spot with a capable pivot (no not EC). Hell, if the Lightning don't lock up Stamkos by July 1st, throw the Richards money and years at him. There are quite a few attractive UFAs out there. It shouldn't be Richards or bust or Top center or bust.
I wouldn't give him 7 years. He's pushing 40 at that point. 4 or 5 years at 7 id be ok for. Or if he wants more years, it'd have to be weighted on the front end to lower the total cap hit so it doesn't seem so high toward the end of his tenure when he's slowing down.
too risky, four years, maybe.
7 years, hell no!
And concussions are a funny thing, each sucessive one comes a little bit easier than the last one, especially after you have one with extended symptoms that last a month.
Richards >>>> Weiss by a long shot
Richards is a legit number 1 center. Whether it be in FA or trade, you have to pay through the nose for that, so you are either committing a couple of more years/dollars than you like or you are parting with highly touted young assets. Either that or tank, an impossibility for the Rangers with Lundqvist in goal and Sather at the helm.
Weiss has hit 60 points once in his career and is 28, he can't carry a team like Brad can.
Drury never had a season over 69 points,
You just don't give him an ironclad NMC.
A NMC in years 1-5 that turns into a modified no trade clause in years 6 & 7 and if he is no longer an asset to the team then you can get rid of him.
And seriously, over the past couple of years, every time they've been in cap trouble they've made room.
This team can no longer afford to NOT have a #1 C
Where do I begin to write how awful this could be? This could be like Bernie nicholls Scott Gomez chris drury wade redden bad. Does he want to play hockey in new York or retire here?
@buttabella "Parise Father and Son Share Hatred of the Rangers" http://ndgoon.blogspot.com/2008/04/parise-father-and-son-share-hatred-of.html
Sather has never signed a player to an offer sheet.
Sorry that reality is a buzz kill
@gravey94 No team has ever won the cup without a number 1 center. Maybe you've been watching a different league than I have but I've been watching the NHL. If you have a top pivot like Richards you can turn a guy like Dubinsky into a 30 goal scorer. See Neal, James and Ericsson, Loui. A #1 makes EVERY player around them better.
As I said down below, don't expect to offersheet stamkos or parise, Sather doesn't believe in them, he is part of the old guard.
I dont think you really know what "out of the box thinking" means either.
@KevinDeLury But unfortunately, a pipe dream. A lot of people on this blog seem to want to have their cake and eat it too. Doesn't work like that unfortunately.
@iamthebest I hear you. And all your points are spot on, but that contract would be an albatross.
@KevinDeLury Yes. Too much, too long. I'm all for giving him an extra 500k-1k. I would not get into a bidding war and I would not give him more than 5 years. The only way the contract goes beyond year 5 is to somehow lower the cap hit which I understand would not benefit Brad. 5 for 35. If not we continue on our way and let the kids play. I don't think with or without BR we are serious cup contenders till the year after next anyway. Have fun in LA Brad, we will be just fine.
@KevinDeLury I'm in love with it. I think it's the best contract since redden.
Yea, and maybe you should read a post before responding. Top 5 center....not the same as #1 center. But to respond to your "fact", name the #1 center on any of the 3 Devils Cup teams? Good players make everyone around them better, not just Centers. Sather doesn't believe in offer sheets...sign Richards because they need a # center...Parise and his dad hate the Rangers - I present the great iamthebest with the box. Perhaps you should try thinking first and worry about the box when you get the thinking part down. Really, signing Richards will turn a 24 goal scorer who missed 4 weeks of the season into a 30 goal scorer....oooh sign me up for 7 years, that's awesome. You might want to Google the word sarcasm to understand what I mean.
@KevinDeLury would you give him more money at less years? Instead of 7yrs at 7 million, maybe 8 million at 5 years ranging from a max of 8.5 million in year 1 and as little as 6.5 in year 5 perhaps?
@KevinDeLury lol what harm could he do? If anything he would be an overpaid coach. Only if Drury could take a paycut
@KevinDeLury In all seriousness, I'd like to hear some suggestions from people who don't want him signed how we remedy the #1C problem, ie who you target and what prospects/picks/roster players you give up for that player.
@iamthebest I was just dreaming.
@KevinDeLury At some point you got to give the devil his due. so you either deal with a large cap hit for an extra year or two, or lose important prospects/picks. Just because Drury is an albatross doesn't mean that anothers, a player who is 10 times the player drury is, would be.
@buttabella What is is like being proven wrong? It must suck so bad that you have to come back at my with trite, cliche, hackneyed "insults". A sure sign that the other party has absolutely no argument to refute the others'. Argument won, by me of course, but we both knew that already right? Can't wait till you bust out that Thornton trade proposal though - riveting stuff!
@gravey94 Ok so the only team that's done it that way is the devils. The devils, who just so happened to have the best goaltender of all time. The devils, who also had "scrubs" like Broten, Arnott and Nieuwendyke. And finally, the Devils, who have not had one lick of success in the post season since the lockout. SO unless you want to get into a time machine to back when they were actually successful and that worked (oh, and have two hall of fame defenders in Stevens and Niedermyer), be my guest.
But notice what that is:
1 team out of 30
Thats not a trend
29 out of 30 is though.
List of centers who have won the cup in the last couple of years:
2011 (likely) - Sedin/Kesler (probable Conn Smythe)
2010 - Toews (Conn Smythe)
2009 - Crosby/Malkin (Conn Smythe)
2008 - Zetterberg/Datsyuk (Conn Smythe)
2007 - Getzlaf
2006 - Staal
I dont know, that seems like more of a trend to me.
Look above you.
Sather has never signed a player to an offersheet
Parise has admitted publicly that he and his father hated the Rangers growing up
Nobody said you need a "Top 5 Center", I didn't. Would like for you to point out for me where I said those words. But a #1 center IS needed. you need to pay for those. People around here want to have their cake and eat it too. Doesn't work like that for any team. Only ways to get them are overpay in money and/or years, pay through the nose in picks/prospects/roster players, or be bad for years wasting time and primes. We are not a rebuilding team. We are a building team. You build teams up the middle, not on the wing.
And I'd like to know how you guys can all see the future. You know for certain that from 2015-2018 we are going to be cap strapped and that Richards is going to be useless? Thats amazing, what is the cap number gonna be? who is president?
Drury - gone after next year
Gaborik - gone after 3 years
And I'll say again, signing these three players over the last couple of years has prevented us from doing what exactly? Signing Kovalchuk? Thank god! Gomez was flipped for a crucial part of our blueline and Redden is no longer on the team. The Rangers ALWAYS find a way to make space. If the cap goes up to 63 we could potentially have 22 million in cap space this year, and that is WITH drury.
And this guy over here wants to trade for Thornton now? Do you pay attention to reality or just live in your own fantasy world? Why not trade for Crosby then? Ovechkin? Bring Gretzky out of retirement? All of those ideas are just as plausible.
My advice to you people would be to invest in center ice, so that you can see other players actually play on multiple occasions and get a sense of their actual worth.
I like Thornton, and I think he's a better player than Richards (2 100+ pt seasons, 2 more 90+ seasons, and he's physical). They would probably have to give up a lot for him and he's 32, so that's a downer, but Torts would love his "jam" and leadership. He doesn't solve the PP problem though and then there's that lack of a Cup. I wouldn't give up the farm for him, but Sather should definitely investigate what it would take.
@gravey94 ditto bro, thank you. What about a possible trade with San Jose bringing Joe back East? Possibly next year after they choke again. I understand that they aren't shopping him, would rather dump Heater, and it's gonna cost some assets.
Now why I think it could happen "outside the box" ;) is that their has been talk about changing something.......and they are capped up and have some young guys coming up for a payday. I love the three year extension that takes him to age 34, ideally that would be a perfect contract for Richards to sign with us. Won't happen. They are arguably compareable. I like Joe much better, personally, Brad has the Cup. Something to explore though, what do you think?
@KevinDeLury I honestly think they are going to go big or not go at all.
@TomUrtzNYR If Rangers buyout Drury and Wolski sure that could be a possibility.
@buttabella HAHAHA I just read this whole thing now. Duchene might be unhappy in Colorado?!?!? The team he grew up loving where he is playing great??!?!
HAHAHA oh man, be honest with me, are you Jerry Seinfeld? Because you are a comedian little guy!
@KevinDeLury And yes, of course every scenario has risk, I just happen to think that yours poses a lot more because it banks on a lot of finger crossing.
Seriously, the signings of drury gomez and redden have stopped us from doing what exactly in the last couple of years? If the cap goes up to 63 million we will have 22 million in cap space.
@buttabella @iamthebest @KevinDeLury Parise? Was that serious? 1)Sather doesn't believe in offer sheets, has spoken out about them multiple times 2)Parise will NEVER be a Rangers, he grew up hating the team. he might not sign with the devils, but they'll trade him before that happens and it wont be to us
Kevin - If you are banking on grachev as becoming richards then We are in more trouble then I thought here. Could be a good player, but will most likley play wing in the show anyways, if he makes it there
@iamthebest @KevinDeLury I say we stay the coursewith our youth. I would have Parise as my #1 priority. The Devils have to go to arbitration this year to have any shot at keeping him. Hopefully he also wants to test the free agent waters next year and that's when not making the Richards move pays off. Not saying he would have to play center bc I would sign him either way, I bet he could go back to center though.
I would sit tight w Richards, 5 years, no more, not even 8 mill, i know it's not my money but the cap hit just isn't worth it. Parise would be. As far as Stamkos goes, I would give up four #1's for him, if Tampa doesn't sign him, Offer sheet him, screw them, I know it wasn't the current ownership that renegged on our deal but he should be a Ranger. We can get a couple of first rounders for our D depth. Keep an eye on Duchene and his RFA status next year in Colorodo, he may be very unhappy by then. I also hope Sharpe tests the market. I'm not saying we will or can get three of these guys or even two if all goes the way it should but if we don't give up a bad contract to Richards, there will be options, a year from now who knows who will be out there or even how well our youth has stepped up. This year, see if you can get Arnott on a one year deal. Maybe try J Joikinen on a 3 year deal. Would Laich sign a short one for more dough than anyone else is offering? Probably not, I'm sure the Rangers brass can figure something out to get us through the next year or so to save our cap cash for 26 year old franchise players who will be 32 at the end of a six year deal, as old as Richards is now. Point is, I don't like the numbers with Richards, my gut is starting to tell me that we should walk away and it won't be the end of the world.
@iamthebest Oh crap why did I think he played center. Ok then Grachev. I think any scenario either one of us comes with has risk.
@KevinDeLury That's almost as risky. The chances that Stepan becomes Richards are about less than 50%. Is more than likely he tops out as a very good 2nd line center. Then you have to deal with the fact that while your waiting 2 years, your also wasting 2 years. Time is the enemy. Your now also banking on someone else becoming available, which they might not be. And Christian Thomas plays wing not center.
@iamthebest This may not be popular but the best answer could be to do nothing develop Stepan and Thomas at C the next few years and when team is ready in two years see who is available then.
@KevinDeLury Of course, and I'll admit that they are a real concern. But like I said, nothing is win-win unless you get lucky somehow. it's a possibility, but it's not something i would bank on.
@iamthebest I can't disagree with your thinking here. The years on the contract are a real concern for me. More than the money.
@KevinDeLury It's the same idea though. You can't be scared of free agency just because youve been burned in the past. Every player gets overpaid in FA, EVERY player.
So which prospects/picks do you part with for a legit, proven number 1 center?
The options for getting one are:
2) overpay with assets
3) be bad for a number of years
1 gets you an elite player in his prime but affects your cap in his later years, the second one gets you the same but mortgages your future and the third wastes the years of Lundqvist and Gaborik.
No option is win-win unfortunatley. I pick option 1 because by the time he would supposedly be hitting his downturn, how many 7 mill + contracts is this team gonna have? Drury is gone next year. Gaborik is only signed for 3 more. I also choose the first option because like i've said, we've had absolutley no trouble dumping bad contracts in the past. and that is IF it turns into a bad one. You need a proven number 1 if you are going to win anything in this league.
@iamthebest He may be the right guy but that is the wrong contract. Way too many years for a 31 year old.
And please do not compare Richards with the 23-year-old Crosby. Although with Crosby's concussion I might not want him either.
@KevinDeLury you can't NOT deal with FA. A team like the Rangers has to because they'll never be bad enough to get one of the elite players in the draft. Yeah, the Rangers have had a bad run with free agents. But there is a difference between the RIGHT free agents (a guy like richards who helps this team get that much closer right away) and the WRONG free agents (we know who this is.). If I told you that a guy like Crosby has hitting free agency, would you pass on the chance to add him because the Rangers have had bad luck with free agents in the past? I sure as hell wouldn't.
With Richards, you are getting a PROVEN 90+ point center, a former CONN SMYTHE winner, and a guy who has shown that he can play and excel in our coaches system. That is a resume that none of the past free agent mistakes can boast.
I'm all for development of our prospects, but we don't have a gaurenteed elite prospect in the bunch. A lot of promise, but nothing that we coudl say "ok, in a few years he can be our richards"
The time for the rangers to go from "Buidling" to "Built" has to start happening sooner rather than later.
@iamthebest It's more than Drury. It seems like the Rangers always miss on the big time contract.
Would rather see them develop what they have and when this team is ready to win in 2-3 years then fill in the gaps. The team should have way more cap room then also.
