Derek Stepan along with other Hastings natives Jeff Taffe (Wild) and Taylor Chorney (Oilers) spearheaded the event in hopes of giving back to their community and the sport they love.
Proceeds from the game benefit the Cottage Grove Hockey Association, the Hastings Hockey Association and Defending The Blue Line
"I grew up and played in Hastings and Hastings gave me a lot," Stepan said. "Anytime you can donate back you do it in a heartbeat. I was fortunate enough to have a group of people that did all the work and got this set up. A lot of people put in a lot of hours on this. It was something special that I was very happy to do."
Other players taking part in the charity game included Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks, Zach Parise of the New Jersey Devils, Paul Martin of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Thomas Vanek of the Buffalo Sabres, Kyle Okposo from the New York Islanders and Jamie McBain from the Carolina Hurricanes.
...great job by Stepan. Love hearing that part of the proceeds went to my friends at Defending the Blue Line.
...h/t to reader Rick N.
Screw it, give him the C now, along with a 12 year contract and pencil in 4-5 Cups...only half-kidding.
Seriously, charity or not, I hope he pasted Parise and Okposo a few times just to let them know there's more where that came from. I'll bet McIlrath would have! Man, this is an exciting time to be a Rangers fan!
Sure future captain, I was thinking like, hall of fame. Yea it's early but if/when he becomes a consistent scorer he's an all star.
@sahilness We talk about Callahan being the next captain but this kid has future captain written all over him.
