RANGERS: If Brad Richards isn't the savior he's being painted as in certain circles, does Glen Sather show us why he's Glen Sather and sign Dave Andreychuk to a three-year, $17-million deal? And is that the point where Mark Messier kicks in the door and rips out Sather's tongue the way Khal Drogo did to a rival in Game of Thrones, and takes over as GM?
...while it's not Sather's fault if Richards doesn't live up to expectations, at some point he has to take the fall for the Ranger ineptness the past 10 years. Although the Dolans are the same guys who stood behind Isiah Thomas for so long so you never know.
...not sure Messier is the answer either. Bringing in a rookie GM may not be the best thing for the organization.
I agree about it not being the answer, Kev.
Say what you will about Sather (and we've all said PLENTY) but the guy is a veteran GM who knows how to run a front office better than any first time ex-player GM -- even the Messiah himself. There is a lot of nuance to that job and it comes with experience.
Sather has actually done a pretty damn good job the last few years, and maybe it took him 20 years to learn his craft but he has the Rangers loaded with depth, rich with prospects, and has built a win-now roster without mortgaging either. And he has undone some of his missteps by passing on his mess to other foolish GMs (see Suter).
Regardless of how Richards performs, canning sather and putting in a rookie does not make this a better club. I do like Mess getting involved and being groomed, but him in the big-boy seat next year scares the piss out of me.
@Scott_from_Jersey Totally agree. May not be the worst thing for Messier to take a GM job somewhere else get some experience and then come back at some point down the road.
