Sam Rosen, Joe Micheletti - New York Rangers: Micheletti does a fine job of bringing the concepts of hockey to the fan and reinforcing those concepts with examples throughout the game. He generally nails what happened during the play without the benefit of a replay and is quite good at explaining what defensemen are doing and should be doing.
Sam Rosen fumbles too many player identifications and too much on-ice action for a man of his reputation.
...i'm one of the few Rangers fans who likes Micheletti so I completely agree with Zona's assessment on him. Where I'm going to have to respectfully disagree is his criticism of Rosen. Has he lost a little? Sure. But let me ask you Rangers fans is there anyone else you'd rather be doing play-by-play for the Blueshirts? Giannone? Trautwig?
...not sure they're a five star tandem, but I hate seeing that Rosen is the reason for them not being a four star one.
this guy derek zona has to be one of the biggest morons for writing an article about broadcasters when he has no clue what he is talking about. Sam is a great announcer and Michelietti is terrible. If he ever watched a game he would realize that Joe is the one that never gets a player right or who actually scored the goal. We do need JD back though.
I love thee guys but too many, " that shot didn't miss by much" if the shot misses the net - it misses the net.
The worst color guy in the game is Drew Remenda of the Sharks. He argues every call and last season he was so upset that Avery was getting more votes for the all star game than Joe Thorton he said something like, "last time i checked sucker punching is not part of the skills competition."
C'mon, who doesnt't have a soft spot for Sam? I'm 39, he's been the voice that has spoken to me through every game, a few dim memories of jim gordon and the big whistle not-withstanding. No, he isn't the best, but he's ours and he loves what he does and it shows. And let me say something else, he is the nicest guy you will ever meet.
I was severely disappointed when JD left. Noone can say he wasn't the class of NHL color guys. But I've been pleasantly surprised with Micheletti. He knows the game, no doubt. and he works well with Sam.
And could they be worse then Emerick and that stiff Chico "Oh geez Doc, ya know, I was talkin' to Marty the other day..." shut it! and don't get me started on bobble-head Daneyko...
thats ridiculous. i love sam, i even think he's better than micheletti. he's my favorite, i hate watchin games on networks other than msg because i dont get to hear him. no way is micheletti carrying sam.
Don't mind Joe but do miss JD...remember this....http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2F&gl=US#/watch?v=uiXOYigHj64
He doesn't get to say it much, but his "it's a power play goal" is second to none. Sam is still the best and if he' lost anything it's because he does NFL games too.
I think my biggest problem with Micheletti is that I've never been able to get over my association with him as the Islanders' commentator. He just doesn't seem like a Rangers guy.
I remember there was that MSG commercial where they had him talking about playing against the Rangers in Brian Leetch's first game and how that makes him part of Rangerdom. MSG's marketing guys were really reaching there. The guy's only connection to the Rangers is that he was a totally inconsequential player on an opposing team about 25 years ago and you make a commercial about it? Hmmm....
good comments, all, some really good points... to me, Sam Rosen is the among the best in the biz.. maybe biased growing up listening to him call games of course. Joe's gotten better every year. He had some big shoes to fill in JD. I like when Dave Maloney does the color, I think he'd be great full time. Overall, i appreciate when the announcers aren't too much 'homers', which I think they all do well on MSG.
As for this article, the Caps guys 4 stars? That takes all credibility from this article for me. Joe Beninati (sp?) is a cliche machine, and sounds like nails on a blackboard IMHO. When he does Rangers games on Versus, i have to turn the sound down.
I don't hate Micheletti but he can get a tad annoying. He has to point out about 500x in one game when anyone is playing that's from Minnesota. Ok, once is fine but by the 5th time it just gets ridiculous. He also makes mistakes all the time w/ player IDs. I also remember last year when he was avidly saying the puck hadn't crossed the line and the replay in front of us was showing the puck about a foot over the goal line.
Although Sam is not what he once was he still is one of the best in the game, maybe I'm a litle biased b/c I remember watching him since I was a kid. The one thing I can't stand is when there's a fight or the game gets chippy he gets up on his soapbox about how "this doesn't belong in the game!" All in all, compared to the other announcers I hear like Chico, Doc, the Isles guys, Olczyk I can't complain too much about what we get to see on a nightly basis. 3/5 is a fair assessment. I don't agree that Joe is carrying Sam though, that's a little ridiculous IMO.
I am a huge fan of Micheletti. He is honest and almost always right on target. He doesn't sugar coat mistakes made by players, coaches, or refs. He is top notch in my book, and as JD would say, he deserves " full marks."
Micheletti routinely gets players wrong, if not just as much, more than Sam.
Also, it's tandem, not tandum.
I whole heartedly call bullshit on this entire article and the notion that sam, on his own, is anything less than 5 stars. Michelletti has annoyed the hell out of me since day one but I admit he has gotten better. The thing with him is that on his own for instance when he covers national games on vs, he is straight, to the point, professional, serious and easy to follow. However when covering msg with sam, he turns into a bumbling idiot; too many times an awesome play is going down and Joes stuck making some lame joke that came about 2 minutes too late. I feel like sometimes he's distracting sam. Can't lie though, he has gotten better in the last couple of years. And completely agreed about the caps commentary, 4 stars? Really? They are quite possibly the most home biased color guys in the league and their voices (and that stupid siren in the Verizon center) drive me batshit crazy.
Man I miss jd
I live out of market and must say that if I have to go a couple of games without the Rangers feed I go crazy. Sam and Joe in my opinion are one of the best combos out there. And I still remember that one game last year that Sam was stuck in a snowstorm for and made it back just to announce the third period. I was so happy just to hear his voice.
that whole article is a good read by the way. some of the announcers are REALLY taken to task. i wish i could hear some of the broadcasts of the tops ranked duos on that list.
Sam Rosen is a king among men. Giannone? Are you kidding? That guy is painful.
Joe does a solid job despite being a tad 'vanilla' during the games. He knows the sport and thats what a color guy should bring. I lived out of market for a long time and I didn't always get the Rangers broadcast with the hockey package so I've watched a lotttttt of different broadcast teams, and all but a select few are well below the Sam and Joe standard
i cant stand micheletti. he says everything twice. he says everything twice. he also is constantly interrupting sam or talking over him. he's a terrible color guy. i agree that maloney does a far superior job. far, far superior. i like sam a lot. sometimes you can hear him slur words (glub glub glub) but i kinda like that about him. i wish that joe was replaced and have every season he's been on with the rangers. also, sam's flying disc/hair visor is AWESOME. get joey 2 times out of the booth and get maloney in there asap!
I prefer Maloney to Micheletti, but I miss JD big time. I love Sam, but a lot of that is nostalgia. Anyone, however, is better than Mike Emrick, IMO. I hate that guy.
You know what, Sam Rosen does a great job in my opinion, everyone is always getting on Micheletti though.
Sam Rosen makes games a lot more exciting to listen too because he is in to it. His trademark lines are comparable to Rick Jeannarett in some ways.
Rangers broadcast team is well below par.
Joe Micheletti will on a regular basis state that it hit a player and under review it did not.
I like Dave Malony when he fills in once in a while .
Dave is the closest to the days of John Davidson.
Rosen will talk about personal things as the game is going on.
Dump them both and rebuild as they did the rest of the team.
True, Rosen's power play announcement is great. I get pumped up when I hear it, and maybe this year we'll get to hear it more often.
I don't mind Joe, and as some other posters noted he's gotten better over time. But he's certainly no JD, and he has a knack for getting stuck in a repeat loop. Here's an interesting game for you - wait until the next time a goal is under review in a Rangers game. Then take a shot every time Micheletti repeats himself. Be sure to call out of work the next day...
The guy who wrote that article is a complete joke. He says the capital announcers are 4 stars...I had to stop watching Cap games because the announcing drove me insane. There is no inflection when the other team scores. If you look away you would have no idea. And giving the Florida Panther announcers 5 stars??? I live in that market and let me tell you they are horrible! Completely terrible!
@Coleen I Live in the Dc area as well and couldnt agree more. They are awful.
