Rangers officially announce signing of Callahan.
Update, 3:34 p.m.:
Cap Geek has Rangers with just $685,500 left with Erixon on roster and no Del Zotto. Rangers now have fourth highest payroll in NHL.
Update, 3:27 p.m.:
Jesse Spector says Rangers have $1,356,333 worth of room, not counting Tim Erixon.
...assuming this number includes Del Zotto.
Update, 3:22 p.m.:
Kevin Allen at USA today says the deal is 3 years, $12.875 million. With first two years at $4 million and last year at $4.875 million.
$4.283 million cap hit per.
Update, 3:19 p.m.:
Callahan on the signing...
"I'm thrilled to be back for three years. I love playing for the Rangers."
...and we love you playing for the Rangers.
Gross also reports that Callahan, who is 100% recovered from his broken leg and began skating two weeks ago, wanted a longer deal but the money worked best at three years and hasn't thought about being the Rangers next captain.
Update, 3:01 p.m.:
Andrew Gross reports that Callahan did not receive a no-trade or a no-movement clause. He said he didn't see need in a three-year deal.
Update, 2:54 p.m.:
Arthur Staple at Newsday says Callahan agent confirms deal is for three years, just under $13 million.
Update, 2:34 p.m.:
Rick Carpiniello at the Rangers Report says that by signing just a three year deal, Callahan will become a UFA at a time when the Rangers should have a lot of cap room.
...smart guy this Callahan character.
Update, 2:17 p.m.:
Kypreos says the deal is for three years in the ballpark of $13 million.
...that would be a cap hit of $4.33 per. Dubinsky's is $4.2. Seems fair to me. How about you?
Update, 2:08 p.m.:
Spector now confirms that Callahan has re-signed with the Rangers.
...wooohooo. Can we start the season tomorrow? Pumped!!!!
Jesse Spector tweets that he just spoke to Ryan Callahan's agent, Steve Bartlett, who said, "Getting close, but nothing 100% yet."
Meanwhile Nick Kypreos says it will be a three year deal.
...three years?!?!? I was hoping for five or six. Isn't he supposed to lead the Rangers into the future?
Just realized that after the '13-'14 season, our UFAs will be Cally, Gaby, Henrik, Girardi, Boyle, and Rupp. I know it's a few years away and a lot could happen, but still. YIKES.
we have more than capgeek says we would, they have us having 14 forwards but instead we have 1.5mill in space with EC as 13th forward and MDZ as 7th dman and with avery in hartford, while keeping wolski on the team
Jesus will all you guys stop with the "Captain" bit?!? He's still very young and may not be ready for captaincy!! Richards is by far the front runner for the C just for the fact that Torts likes him and he's locked up for almost a decade.
Super Pumped! My first thought is that if Cally continues his level of play and wears the Sather locks him up for the long term after the second year of this deal, when they have a better idea of where the team stands cap wise and after the next CBA is in place.
Now the conversation about lines and cap space and roster moves can begin.
Rangers will have some cap room but they would have to sign Lundqvist, Gaborik, Redden ((LOL), Girardi, and Boyle.More team contract info here: http://www.outsidethegarden.com/salaries.asp
I think theyll work an extension out towards the end of the contract. Dont expect Cally to leave this roster for a LONG time.
Thank goodness.... at least we've got him locked in. Definitely surprised about the 3-year deal though, considering Dubi got 4.
@cb1 That is terrifying
@IMLazzaro oh, and Torts doesn't like Cally? Torts couldn't make it through a press conference without gushing about him.
@IMLazzaro Get him everyone. LOL!
@JohnSikulaIII Thanks John.
@cb1 maybe Montreal will take him! They like underwhelming players
@KevinDeLury No, but they did tell him to make sure and congratulate his buddy Dubi who they are giving the "C" to. HAHAHA
@cb1 Very strange for sure.
@KevinDeLury Totally. I can't even wrap my head around how long it is till the season starts. I am going to lose my mind!
We still have the Winter Classic announcement and jersey unveiling to look forward to though.
@Ranger Dave Not only that, he has NEVER played a game as a captain for ANY team. If Tors loves him so much, why didn't he make him captain in the 7 years they were together in Tampa? Richards will not be the Captain.
@Ranger Dave Agreed. But his relationship with the guy who actually doles out the letters is going to have a lot to do with it!!
@KevinDeLury You got a like for that one
@IMLazzaro I think giving it to Richards would put way to much pressure on a guy who just came to NY and signed such a huge contract. Callahan already has the love and respect of the team and the fans. Torts gave him an A last year for a reason.
@CJ Yeah, won't be till camp. Ha! was for CJ.
