After retirement, Blackburn reinvented himself and attended Arizona State University where he did work for the Goaltending Development Institute before settling in Dallas where he currently works in real estate.
"I wasn't going to be getting better," Blackburn said. "For me it was closure just to be able to move on and it was just mentally incredibly taxing sitting around and not being part of the team and sort of being on your own all the time so I was happy to be able to move on finally."
...i'm sure I'm not the only one, but I was a huge Blackburn fan when he came up and it's so upsetting to see what happened to him. You have to wonder how the Rangers goaltending situation would have played out if Blackburn didn't get hurt. Would Hank ever have gotten a chance? Would he have been traded? Would he have beaten out Blackburn? Either way would have been interesting.
I actually remember sending Sather an email BEGGING him to let this kid develop and not trade him away for some aging superstar. Nothing seemed to phase this kid, if he gave up a softy, he would come right back and stone a break-away. His injury was so unfair to him, but it's nice to see that he got some amount of closure and was able to move on with his life. Best of luck to him!
I watched a 16 year old Blackburn lead Kootenay to a WHL title, he totally stoned a Calgary team who had Pavel Brendl on their team.
I knew then he was going to be a very good goalie and was just as happy to see the NYR draft him.
If you want to wonder then I think what would have happened is Danny would have established himself as the NYR starter and the NYR would have traded Lundqvist's rights away.
henrik was already drafted before blackburn and i think its obvious he would have never been here if not for blackburn getting injured. he would have never gotten a real look or he would have been traded, sure glad that didnt happen
I think that losing Blackburn definitely led to us getting Hank, which I am happy about, but I remember being CRUSHED when he went down. He was projected to be such a solid goaltender. I was beyond excited to see him get some years under his belt
