The New York Rangers (29-19-3) defeated the Washington Capitals (27-14-9) by the score of 2-1 in a shootout, tonight. For a recap and box score go to Yahoo! Sports and newyorkrangers.com.
...i know I say it all the time, but you can never, ever count this team out. It looked like Holtby was on his way to one of the easiest shutouts in NHL history then boom an ugly goal and away they go. I can't over-emphasize how impressed I am with how Torts has been able to get this group to buy into what he's selling no matter who's in the line-up. Unreal.
...lots of people, including myself, questioning Torts going with Biron tonight. Remind me to never do that again.
...i know after each of Gaborik's two hat tricks and his four goal game we wondered if they would get him going, but maybe it's a flukey goal like tonight's that snaps him out of it.
...watching someone play defense normally isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but I can watch Staal defend Ovechkin all day long.
...just absolutely ridiculous moves in the shootout by both Wolski and MZA. Speaking of MZA, not sure if anyone saw the Versus post game but he totally name dropped Avery's Bar "Warren 77" in his interview. I think he'll drink for free tonight.
...good for Sauer getting the assignment of Staal's running mate tonight. Did not look out of place at all.
...thought Del Zotto had an uneven game. Out of position on a number plays, but I also thought he used the poke check very effectively to break up some scoring chances.
...didn't the Rangers called up Grachev for the game? ;)
...Prust is an absolute stud. The guy is a game time decision with numerous injuries and he's out there giving 110%.
...couple of quick negatives: continued struggles of pp and faceoffs and absolutely no traffic in front of the Capitals goal. Only time someone was in front was Gaborik on his goal.
...right back at it tomorrow night against Panthers at MSG.
I feel I have a good assessment of skill and I have to agree with everyone who thinks Drury is done. He will never come close to what he was again. IMO he shouldnt even play the rest of the season. Lets bring some more rookies up. He can barely keep up with the play and on the pk all it looks like he is trying to do is go down to block a shot.
This game is all about speed and Grachev is farthest thing from fast. I have been saying Grachev is a waste of time since the begining of the season and still believe it.
As for MDZ, he does not have great skills. He is an average skater, decent stick handling skills, has a futile shot, and is weak on the puck carrier. The difference between this year and last is his smarts and his vision. Last year he had that awesome vision and made some great passes out of the D zone.. If he cant get back to that smart hockey he is done as well.
Guys dont be fools if prospects are not getting it done in the AHL they are not going to miraculously do well in the NHL. That is why the AHL is there.
Staal vs Ovechkin is the reason why I firmly believe Staal should focus more on being a physical stay at home D and forget about the offense. He always bring his A game against Ovechkin. Lots more hits and more snarl. Less stick checks and getting out of position. I'd like to see less effort on offense so Staal can bring that A game more often.
I believe that Wolski's SO goal was what Zucc did for his second SO on the season. I did see them talking before the SO started.
Oh and Sunny I believe thats 8 games we won trailing in the third (might be 7) which leads the NHL. Unreal since it felt like we didn't do it ONCE last year.
Wow, what a character win. Really a great effort winning 2 straight road games trailing in the 3rd with our B-squad. A few random thoughts of my own: I thought
Del Zotto really struggled again in his first game back. He seemed tentative and unsure and just overall like weak and beatable D guy. Not so sure he'll be able to contribue to this team this season.
Drury is just done, the guy is fighting to keep up and make a play but he's just toast out there.
I think Grachev is the rangey physical presence down the middle that we lack. Maybe he didn't do much tonight in limited ice time in a VERY defensive game, but I think he can develop into an Antropov type. I fear that we cut the cord too early on this guy and he goes on to do good things elsewhere in this league.
Whose pumped for EC, Dubie, and Cally to come back?
This team is built for a run deep in the season, I can feel it in my bones.
Sorry Kev, not trying to steal you job just had some musings in my own mind. I'll stay away from the blue italics.
WOWZA - Woksli and Zuccs...they shook Holtby out of his skull on those sick dekes...
Wolski is a big pick up huh? Best trade so far?
and Zuccs is 4 for 4 in the shootouts. must be some kind of record, no?
No mention of Drury....could he be getting a Wade Redden deal soon?
Great comeback, what are the stats for 3rd period comebacks because I'm sure the Rangers up there...and to top it a win with sick shootout goals its niice
As close to a perfect execution of a game plan as this group could have played. Limiting the Caps to 17 shots in regulation and finding a way to get the game tied was terrific. Coming out with the shootout win was the icing on the cake. As I said earlier mabout the Biron start, maybe Torts went with his gut. The way he is coaching this year it's tough to question anything he does right now.
Bad job by me completely leaving McD out of my game thoughts. He pretty much clinched Del Zotto being sent back to the CT Whale as soon as Girardi is healthy. Great game. Getting more comfortable every day.
@erichan I was shocked Avery didn't get a penalty on that play.
@KCinMN98 Staal can be a monster!
@KCinMN98 So fun to watch.
@Scott_from_Jersey from twitter: NYR now an incredible 7-12-3 in games they trail entering the third period, best in the league
@Scott_from_Jersey Scott, love to hear the thoughts of my readers. That's what this blog is all about.
@KenDonnelly Nothing to mention.
@rusty25 Yeah Torts is gettin it done...Stan Fischler said on XM Home Ice today that he's def in the running for coach of the year.
@KevinDeLury McD & Stepan ooze class!
@KevinDeLury DZ's head is just not in the game this year...not sure what his deal is. It's disappointing bc he started off like an all star and has fallen from grace so fast.
