"Every team has issues, every team has ebbs and flows," Sather said. "You can't start panicking about all the things that happen.
"I think we can compete [in the playoffs]. It doesn't mean we're going to do anything [at the deadline] or not do anything. The whole goal this season has been to keep these young guys going as well as they can, to create a team that takes some ownership in itself. It took us a while to get to that stage, but we're getting there."
Larry Brooks at the New York Post adds that the Rangers won't be in on Stephen Weiss or Jason Spezza, or any center with a contract that extends beyond this season, given that there is every reason to believe they will sign Brad Richards as a free agent this summer.
Brooks also says that there's a longshot of longshots, that the Blueshirts go after Peter Forsberg.
...Sather has proved the last two deadlines that he's beyond the quick fixes that defined the early years of his tenure with the Rangers. I've been saying it all year, but I truly feel Sather finally gets it and I'd be shocked if he gave up a young player for Kaberle, McCabe or any other big time defenseman we've heard to be linked to the Rangers.
...Forsberg? C'mon Larry give me a break.
Well, definitely no Forsberg lol..hopefully this is the end of the drama with him. He was a great player, but he just needs to stop.
According to TSN, he is announcing his retirement:
I would disagree that sather has proved that the last two deadlines. two years ago he sacrificed a second round pick in the hopes Antropov could get him in and win him a series. they got in and pushed the Caps to 7, but was it worth the second rounder when you look at the Rangers luck in the second round?
Last year he certainly did avoid the panic buy move and it is great to hear him say he has the same approach this year.
Dont understand Brooks suggesting Arnott for a second because that is the same kind of wasteful move, imo.
i know a few weeks ago i was pulling for the rangers to pick up forsberg until kevin opened my eyes. forsberg is a -4 in 2 games with 4 pm and no points. i was expecting him to come out strong but maybe it'll take a bit. and whats this i hear about eric brewer hahaha. no way. and i dont know why we would pick up mccabe. those numbers are not impressive. i think we leave the team for the rest of the season and see what minor changes we can do in the summer
@ChristopherDecker Officially worse than Favre.
@mleetch352 I actually liked the Antopov & Morris moves, but yes ultimately they didn't work out. Agreed on Arnott, not sure what Brooks is thinking there.
@Mikey_Series7 I can see Sather making a minor move (Gilroy?), but all signs point to saving up for Richards this off-season.
