Rangers Scouts at Panthers/Blues Game

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

weissDavid Neal at the Miami Herald reports that Rangers scouts were among many others during last night's Panthers/Blues game.

...the only player I've heard the Rangers may have any interest in on either team is Florida's C Stephen Weiss who has 15g, 22a on the season. Weiss, 27, is under contract through 2012 at $3.1 million per year.

...Weiss is a nice little player who would fill a major need at center ice. Obviously, a player of Weiss' skill level is going to demand a big return which could include prospects and young talent such as possibly McD, Valentenko and among others.

...this would be a tough call for me as I've been beating the go young drum all year, but I'd have to give serious consideration to any proposal that would bring this team Weiss.

...would love to hear your thoughts.

i don't see why florida would be shopping weiss at all. he's young, talented, has a NMC, and is signed for another 2 years after this one at a very affordable 3.1M/year.

I'm certain Rangers are looking at Higgins. I kid.

I would like to see Weiss working with Gabby, which could get him untracked and provide the scoring touch the team is missing right now. On the other hand, i would hate to see McD go as I feel he is going to be an outstanding d man for many years to come. I realize that you have to give something to get something, but as Kevin said, it's a really tough call.

I'm a huge proponent of S. Weiss. Unfortunately I've lived in Florida for the past 3 years and I've had a chance to check this kid out in person several times - he's a stud. He's exactly the kind of playmaker down the middle we (and Gabby) have been needing, and carries this Panthers team with not much talent around him. If there is any feasible way to bring him over, even if it means McD and others w/o getting rid of any core guys then I say pull the trigger, and I'm usually against big roster moves such as this.

True, he only just did get the wires taken out of his jaw. But he's expected to start skating this week so a deadline deal is still a possibility but I really hope unlikely. Kaberle anyone?

@SmooveV Burke is no fool, I think he read he wants a 1st-round pick and a top prospect for Kaberle.

Forgot about McCabe as well. I thought he was injured, why would the Rangers be interested in him?

If the Rangers are thinking about going after McCabe they could be scouting out other pieces to round out the deal. I think at 27, Weiss is young enough that you're not exactly blowing up the youth movement by trading for him, but at that point I'd rather wait for the off-season to go after Brad Richards after we buy out Drury. I really really hope they don't overpay for McCabe.

He is another OK player, unless we're getting some one great - what's the point? We have 2nd line centers to fill 2 teams...

Depends on what they would want. A high draft pick and Valentenko and I might be willing to do that.
