Yost describes a number senarios that have been discussed between the two teams...
"One avenue discussed - the recently returned Vinny Prospal, another smaller contract, and a high draft pick. Another looked at - Chris Drury's bloated contract for another year and a half (7.5M through '11-'12, NMC!) paired with Ethan Werek (C) (or) Ryan McDonagh(D). Word is the Senators would much rather have talent up front, especially on the wings, considering their plethora of defensive prospects. Ottawa's also showing heavy interest in the talented two-way winger Ryan Callahan, but doesn't sound like New York's ready to budge on that quite yet. He's an RFA at the end of the season, though, so anything's possible, especially considering the fact that Dubinsky's due a new contract as well."
Yost adds that the Senators have also asked about Dan Girardi.
Gonchar, who still has two more years left on his contract at $5.5 million, has 6g, 16a and is a -17 this season.
...i posted this more for conversation than accuracy. My question is would you be willing to take on an extra year of the 35-year-old Gonchar at $5.5 million to get Drury's $7.5 million off the books next year? And to make this even less likely, Drury would have to waive his NMC to go to Ottawa.
...my answer and I think all of yours would be an emphatic NO!!!!!!! Could you imagine the albatross Gonchar's contract would be that final year? Unless the Rangers decided to Redden him to the CT Whale, in which case it wouldn't be so bad. But a look at Gonchar's numbers makes you wonder how anyone in their right mind could think this guy would help the Rangers power play.
...and who's playing time gets cut the next few years to bring him in? The more I analyse this the less I wish I posted it. But I've written this much and I'm not deleting it.
At some point there has to be a post on here about who is a theoretical expendable. As in...we've traded/let go of "potential" players such as Prucha. Will the Rangers make at least one move? Who, if you could cut off your pinky-toe would you let see walk for X player or X number off the cap....
Keep the defensive youth movement moving..I love it, hope we can keep our young dmen together for a couple years and let them develop together..but knowing dolan we wont.
The fact that Callahan's name is even mentioned destroys the credibility of these rumours and that hack blogger.
On XM's Home Ice they were talking in general terms about how some teams think it's a good idea to spend big bucks to bring in a guy to improve the PP...but that guy has to also play 5 on 5 hockey. AND it might not even help your PP.
I love this quote that I forget who said it but, "Powerplay success is like falling in love/out of love; when you fall in love, you don't know how it happens. Just like when you fall out of love; no idea how it happend".
I think that's a great quote because the Rangers PP has been awful since Renney was the Coach. New coach = same results. So there isn't going to be a simple fix. When the PP gets good, no one will have a good explanation as to 'why?'
Please no!!!!! If for some odd reason they would take Redden straight up then maybe, but that most likely will not happen. I like our young D-core right now. MDZ should go back to Hartford for the rest of the year. It will help the development. Play Eminger until we get maybe a McCabe (is he a FA at the end of the season?) Would anyone give up Grachev or Kundratek for McCabe?
this is just as bad, if not worse, then getting Souray. At least the Oilers would be paying part of his salary . The Rangers need to worry about developing younger players and not going for the quick fix of a past their prime player.
Youth, youth, youth and then they kick the tires on a 35 year old defensman?? Not to mention Gonchar's skills as an actual DEFENSEman are no better than MDZ's. Pass. But if I had to choose one, I'd dump Prospal and a draft pick, then still buy-out Drury at seasons end.
@blueman I think you left this comment in the wrong post. And I was completely joking. Didn't you click on the link to the Seinfeld video.
@Wpg_Ranger_Fan No way the Rangers are trading Gaborik. At least not this year.
@AnnoyingJoe Yeah, I was definitely ocnflicted on posting it, but the rumor isn't from Eklund. It's from one of the bloggers at HockeyBuzz and a lot of them are legit bloggers. Doen't make this rumor real, but that was the reasoning for my posting it.
@Ragland Isn't McCabe hurt? Hate to give up prospects for damaged goods.
