John Tortorella confirms that Del Zotto will remain with the team and has been impressed with his improvement in areas of concern.
Same lines as Monday's Red Wings game at practice this morning, where the Rangers worked extensively on the power play with these units...
Jim Cerny tweets that the fact that Del Zotto is practicing with the team most likely means he will not be sent down to the Whale.
...seriously, why is Brian Boyle not on either of these power play units? Get his big body in front of the net and bomb away from the point. Every team causes havoc in front of the net with traffic but the Rangers.
...nice to see Torts sticking with his word to develop Del Zotto on the big club. Not sure it's the right decision, but good to see him not sending mixed messages.
Sadly, I agree with Kevin that it's unlikely that he's back next year. Gilroy will be a very good to great defenseman though. Much more so than Del Zotto, he reminds me of Leetch the wayhe brings the puck up ice and lingers in the offensive zone. Probably more accurately, Zubov though. Got to remember, he's new to the defense roll. And even though he's our oldest d-man, he's not old at all. With his innate offensive skill and rapidly improving defense, he could be very good in the new(ish) NHL for a long time. Of course, not sure how much I pay him to be the 4th-6th defenseman. Maybe sign him to a 2-3 year deal with $ back-loaded. That offsets the Redden/Drury cap hits next off'season/year and still leaves room for FAs.
I agree with you there, Kevin. There is no way Gilroy is back next year and to be honest, if I'm him, I wouldn't want to be back either. Let's just hope he doesn't wind up on the Penguins, Flyers, or Devils killing us on their PP.
Don't see Gilroy here next year whether it's a deadline deal or they don't re-sign him this offseason. So maybe they figure they'd rather develop MDZ over giving Gilroy deserved time on the pp.
Torts must be way smarter than all of us, because, to me, the obvious answer seems like the best one. I assume he must know something I don't.
He's the coach, not me, but c'mon. Gilroy on point and Boyle in the crease seems like a no-brainer.
I agree with the concensus here. What does Gilroy have to do to get some PP time? I think Torts just plain doesn't like him. In fact, I've kind of always felt that Torts has had it out for Gilroy since he arrived. The same can be said about Avery, which ClassClown brought up earlier.
i agree with ClassClown 100%. gilroy should be getting reps on the PP. i don't like seeing zucc on the point. and i wouldn't mind seeing some boyle on the PP too. i mean how much worse can it be right?
i hope boyle is just going through a slumping phase now and that we haven't gotten all we're going to get from him for the season.
It's almost inexcusable at this point not to give Gilroy significant PP time. He's looked good when he's gotten any -- decisive, willing to shoot, and mobile. I know there are "names" ahead of him, but he certainly needs to be given a good look there. It's kind of like an Avery corollary -- despite how well he plays he does not get increased opportunuties, and sometimes even gets fewer.
