Montoya, 25, has an 11-8-0 record with a 3.19 goals against average (GAA) and a .891 save percentage (sv%) in 21 games this season with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL.
Meanwhile, in other Rangers first round bust news, the Florida Panthers aquired RW Hugh Jessiman (2003) and two others from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for RW Michael Frolik and G Alexander Salak.
Jessiman, 26, has played in 25 games for the Rockford IceHogs (AHL) this year scoring three goals with two assists and 27 PIM. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound winger has recorded back-to-back 20 goal seasons with the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL), while also registering more than 100 PIM three times in his professional career.
...not sure any team in the history of the NHL has had worse back-to-back first round picks. How does Sather still have a job?
...having said that I do wish the two of these guys luck. Except for Montoya b/c he's an Islander so screw him.
Bob McKenzie at TSN joked that these two moves were a conspiracy against Rangers fans.
Why in the world would anyone want Jessiman? 3 goals in 25 games in the minors? Yeah, he's a top line prospect all right.
When Montoya was drafted out of college we all thought he was the goalie of the future. Of course none of us saw Hank coming or knew anything about him. I still remember being at his first game at the Garden against Atlanta when Kevin Weekes was out hurt. He stood on his head and the Rangers responded behind Jagr and scored a boatload of goals. My son and I lleft on an unbelievable high that day, saying that Weekes had his work cut out for him if he wanted his job back. Obviuosly he never got it back.
Maybe we'll also see Brendl and Lundmark on the trade front today. Then the news on first round busts will be complete.
@alwaysright Maybe they're hoping he can regain his old form. ;) I think the Rangers brass would probably root for that as it might make them look better.
