Practice Update: Woywitka Injured; Erixon Recalled; Injury Updates

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Andrew Gross reports that Jeff Woywitka had to leave practice early today due to a foot injury he sustained blocking a shot Saturday night in Phoenix.

In the event Woywitka can't go tomorrow, the Rangers have recalled Tim Erixon from the Whale (via Chris Botta).

Gross adds that the recently recalled Stu Bickle will replace Steve Eminger (shoulder) in the line-up tomorrow over Erixon because of his physical play. Erixon will only play if Woywitka can't go.

Speaking of Eminger, John Tortorella says he will be out 8-10 weeks.

According to Pat Leonard, Torts also says Mike Sauer (concussion) will be out for awhile and Wojtek Wolski (hernia) will be out another week to 10 days.

...holy crap these guys are dropping like flies.

...got to feel for Eminger.

In positive injury news, Gross adds Marc Staal practiced for the first time without a non-contact jersey, however, he has not been cleared for contact yet. He should be cleared in a few days.

...huh? Why would he practice in a regular jersey if he hasn't been cleared for contact yet?

Here's the five lines at practice today also courtesy of Gross...

Anisimov-Stepan-Gaborik
Dubinsky-Richards-Callahan
Rupp-Fedotenko-Prust
Hagelin-Boyle-Mitchell

Wolski-Christensen-Avery

...should we call the fifth line the "Healthy Scratch" line?

...in all seriousness, with all the forwards healthy it's really tough for me to complain about Avery not being in the line-up.

would rather have Wolski in there over Mitchell. Mitchell has been a good call-up, but it's not like he really brings much to the table. Let's at least give Wolski a chance to get some games and see if he can produce.

@cb1 i gotta disagree. wolski needs a sports shrink and then a one way ticket to the KHL. mitchell plays hard and has some chemistry with hags.

Here's hoping that Erixon turns Woywitka into Wally Pipp!

BTW, there was a lot of talk the other day about Tort overusing McDonagh and Girardi. Suddenly I don't think he can use them enough! Amidst all the defense injuries and the stellar play of the 2 I just mentioned, I am ecstatic with the season so far from MDZ...combo of hitting and now some offense coming around!

Fed needs to be cut. But he won't because Torts just won't get the idea through his head that he's a worthless player. Same can be said for Mitchell, Christiansen, and Boyle. Wholly unimpressed.

As for Eminger, yeah that's a bad rap, he's not a WOW type defenseman, but he gets the job done. I think he'll have a bigger impact by being out than anyone else.

@IMLazzaro hmmm. i;d say keep feds and mitch for sure. EC is a flop at most and boyle needs a reality check in terms of his career. feds ahas exp and shows some great play when given the ice time.

@IMLazzaro Fedentenko? Really? He has two Stanley Cup rings — that kind of experience goes miles once this time is in the playoffs.

@_Jack@IMLazzaro I agree with IML. Not "cut" but certainly he is a candidate for a scratch or two (along with the rest of the people he mentioned.)

Feds has specifically mentioned that strength is a huge part of his game, and the early season he was unable to spend time in the gym (because of their travel schedule). Since then, Feds has been trying to build strength between games, and by the look of his game has been unsuccessful. Perhaps some time as a scratch would allow Feds to get himself into the shape he wants to be in to play better?

@CJ@_Jack@IMLazzaro yet, other players have said in interviews that feds is a machine when it comes to lifting in the the gym. the best on the team is what i believe was said. (which shocked me)

@CJ @_Jack @IMLazzaro hey, not all players are hot at the same time, last year we struggled with offense and Dubi, Feds and Boyle kept us ticking, at the moment other players are scoring, yeah it would be great if the whole team was on fire but it doesn't always work that way. Keep the faith!

@_Jack his 10 points going miles to help the Rangers win?

@IcyCup I've watched plenty of games. I hear Feds name come up only when he takes a penalty. He's invisible out there. The only players on the team with a lower shot % are Mitchell and Sauer. He doesn't bring anything to the forecheck and he isn't doing anything to help on defense (-1) He's taking up a roster spot in the last year of his career when the NYR have a ton of young talent aching for a tryout at the NHL level. But Torts will keep him around because he plays favorites.

@IMLazzaro this isnt a video game, feds brings more than points to the team. im not sure if youre catching a lot games.

@_Jack Yes, they're winning. Is it really because of Fedotenko? No. It's not. It's in spite of his shitty play that they're winning.

@IMLazzaro I don't know if you're watching any of the games this season or have checked the standings but the Rangers are winning.

@thenyrblog I think that Sauer has started light workouts already is good news...not bad. and a time line for WW is good as well.
