Avery Waived; Hungry to Prove People Wrong
Written by Kevin DeLury on .
Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that the Rangers have waived Sean Avery for the second time this season. Here's Avery on being waived...
"I guarantee that I'll play my a-- off and give everything I have for the team that will give me the chance I wasn't getting [by coach John Tortorella]. That team will be getting a guy who has a lot to prove.
"The GM and coach willing to look past some of the things that are out there about me, I can guarantee that they won't ever be sorry, and neither would my teammates.
"I'm hungry to prove people wrong."
Avery, whose agent, Pat Morris, was given permission by general manager Glen Sather to contact NHL teams during the Dec. 19-27 holiday roster freeze regarding possible interest in a trade.
...i can sit here and kill Torts and Sather, but really, was there anyone who didn't expect this? Torts never liked Avery and it seems the only reason he was brought back up in November was to jump start an uninspired Rangers team. And after he successfully did that, there was really no more use for him in the eyes of Tortorella.
...in Brooks' article he mentions the Islanders as a perfect landing place for Avery and I couldn't agree more. Could you imagine the jump start he'd give that underachieving team? That would be a nightmare scenario for the Rangers.

just look at the series against washington, he put in that srub voros for avery and yeah one player shouldnt make a difference, but in reality they lost momentum. they'll miss avery soon, just wait till the other hand drops and this team goes soft, it will happen trust me
Avery is all heart, Torts is a F***ING douchebag to let his decision be based solely on not liking him, first giving him little ice time so he had no time to do anything thus making it look like he's not effective. I love the Rangers but I hope this bites Tortorella in his ugly ass
bc Sean gave everything he had in the little time he got, and in fairness to him he never got a chance to play his game which made him so good under renney. I love the excuse "Were getting healthier" please like Wotjek Wolski is going to make a difference, here comes the cup now, hes so soft I could whipe my ass with his game and he costs double the amount of Sean just about, and not to mention that statue fedetenko, so glad we brought him back, his effectiveness in his usual 20 games was so worth it, that move really paid off! And of course in case anyone gets hurt the great christensen is around. Never a good move to waive a fan favorite who only wanted to be here, trust me their not winning bc of this coach he'll find a way to screw things up, he only won in tampa bc of a super team around him, i hope I'm wrong but hes the kind of coach that changes things for no reason
I personally think this is a huge mistake....Avery provides a huge spark to the team
Folks, you do know the Rangers have the most points in the East, right? How is waiving a guy that is either a healthy scratch or playing 3 minutes a game a mistake?
Like Avery myself....but people hating on torts must not be really watching the ramgers for the first time in years the rangers finally play with an identity and that is all due to torts and his system now he has all the young kids slowly stepping into the lineup ie hagelin don't know why everyone crying about Avery last time I looked we were tied for most points in the NHL
We can all have our opinions. The bottom line is that the coaching staff as a whole are comfortable enough to go in another direction. It is also not a secret that most of his team mates also did not like him. Hopefully he clears waivers and stays with the Whale until we need him again.
i dont why, okey guys he played excellent the three from the five games, again i dont know why he sent him back
It is hard to argue with how the Rangers are responding to Torts and his system right now. This said, I have never been a fan of Torts and likely never will. I think he is a hothead (certainly reinforced on 24/7) and I don't like the way he treats his players and the handling of Sean Avery is a perfect example. As long as the Rangers win Torts will have a job. But the minute they grow tired of his act, he'll be out of here in a NY minute.
I love the way the rangers are playing, but averys got more goals than dubi with 100x less ice time. So torts, your a dick on this 1
Torts needs to get his head out of his ass is what he needs.
Gotta love bringing a player back, winning 13/15 games with that person in the lineup, then tossing him aside like a piece of trash.
F••K TORTARELLA!!
Avery got a raw deal, for sure. But it's hard to argue with the results that Torts has been able to pull out of this team. Especially when you consider that he has SERIOUSLY slowed down on the constant line juggling. This is a man with a plan. This is also a man that has won a cup. I love Avery, but Torts is earning my trust with each Ranger win.
Mitchell, EC, Rupp, and especially wolski do not and should no be getting a spot on the Rangers roster over Sean Avery... This is an awful move by Torts!!! Man he is a tough guy to like for more then 5 min...
Tortorella speaks a lot about respect for the game, and before he was the head coach and he was critical of Avery of National TV for a lack of it. I agree that Tortorella has probably never really liked Avery, however I do believe that there is a reason beyond this for his 1st and 2nd demotions. I'd like to believe that Avery would go unclaimed and to the AHL, but I think the best thing for everyone is that Avery be claimed by someone else Avery obviously doesn't really fit into their long term plans and I think he needs to go once and for all just to remove the thought of the potential "Avery factor;" Don LaGreca has mentioned that Avery could potentially be a 20 goal scorer, but is not versatile outside of his speed. He takes dumb penalties, he doesn't take face offs, can't be a penalty killer, and doesn't have sustained success on the powerplay. If he goes to the AHL where he is still under Ranger control, good, if not its not the end of the world.
@EvanSzymkowicz I'm sorry but he took exactly ZERO bad penalties since the last call up. Players grow. He can & does take face offs, was effective on the power play when given the chance. It's unfair to anyone to refuse to see who they are and only judge them on who they may have been.

thats really a damn shame they waived him again... the guy was so good for the team and new york in general. it really wouldnt surprise me if the islanders pick him up or even the flyers... some payback that would be for the winter classic
@thenyrblog not gonna keep healthy scratching him... Plus our team looks great and more pieces are going to he coming back
@thenyrblog He's such a vindictive prick doing it right before the WC. Avery deserves to play in it.
it would kill me to get behind the Islanders, but I'd be first in line to buy that Avery jersey.
@terriect Im sorry, maybe my wireless router is acting up again. did you just say you were going to buy an Islander Jersey?????????????
I dont care if Jesus signs a one year deal with the islanders, i ain't buying his jersey.
@terriect I would never do that, but I'd continue to follow him for sure.
