Avery to be Waived Soon?
Written by Kevin DeLury on .
Pat Leonard says it wouldn't surprise him if Sean Avery were placed on waivers soon. He adds that no source is telling him this is going to happen.Leonard also notes that if it were to happen it won't be this week as rosters are frozen from tomorrow to December 27th.
...with Rupp's return to the line-up and Wolski right behind, I sadly have to agree with Leonard.
...if the Rangers can stay healthy, Torts will finally get his wish and be done with Avery in a Rangers uniform.

Kev...
Avery is as effective as any of the bottom six. In different ways at times... but just as effective.. and we could use him against the isles and Flyers... Boyle could take a break... so could a few other guys ...really. .. nobody... not even prust takes those teams off their game Like Avery... and none of them draws the penalties he draws .. am i wrong..?
Thats another thing torts pissed me off with... he sits avery and then claims he's leveled off.. of course he's leveled off if he's sitting the whole game...or healthy scratched... and if he's leveled off... what the hell is everybody else doing in that bottom six.... lighting the world on fire...?
He's played the game torts way.. its a game he can't win.
Im a ranger fan my whole life since the early 70's. Season's since early '90's. Ive always thought of them as a class organization. Im surprised Slats and Dolan are allowing this to happen. They are not offering him a spot next year.. thats well known... his contract is up... he's earned and deserves a spot on this years team. They should let him finish up his career here in NYC with a little dignity. Not like they're carrying him... he's earned the spot. Avery has always been good TO and FOR NYC. Wouldn't hurt to show a little respect on his way out. Like I said he deserves the spot anyway. I both like and dislike torts... but if he doesn't win a cup here... his legacy will be having destroyed a NYC fan favorites career.
Remember last year... .. when they had that extended shoot out.. and f*cking Roszival went over the boards to shoot out while Avery sat... I knew it then.. I said it then... Torts wont stop til he's finished this kid.
OK.... now.. Go ahead... take my head off..... Jim
Barring any championships, this is going to be Tortorella's legacy with the Rangers.
Bottom line... What are the teams WIN/LOSS record with and without Avery?Isn't that the only way to really decide his influence on the rest of his team mates...Henrick loves him and his influence on the ice and in the locker room Rupp has not as yet been effective on the fourth line especially in drawing penalties by the opposition as Sean does...Gaborik always say's that Torts tells it like it is and pulls no punches..However he and Avery have no line of communication.I'm sorry, but Wolski and EC are just not in the same class as Avery sometimes heart and balls trumps skills.
did he not see how the rangers started the season without AVERY,we sucked.now he wants to get rid of him again for what reason, what did AVERY do wrong now.i think the rangers need to get rid of the coach this time not AVERY!!
Torts is a moron!!
You would think by now, after all the support Avery got when he did play a few weeks ago, that Torts would get his head out of his ass and put aside all the hatred toward Avery.
He's proven to be an asset to the team over and over God knows how many times.
Plus Avery has said he DOESN'T want to play for any other team. Doesn't that say anything?
If this is the end of Avery then I can honestly say that there will be thousands of unhappy Rangers fans including myself.
I'm not a huge Avery fan, but if this happens, Torts is even a bigger ass than I give him credit for, especially with EC still on the team. Let's see what happens.
Avery should be playing over Christensen. He plays with a fire and intensity that no one else on the team does. Without him in the lineup,.
the team is too soft and cuddly to play against. Obviously, Tortorella doesn't like him so the team should just release the guy-- which in my humble opinion would be a mistake.
Avery's ATOI per game per season under Renny;
17:49
and
15:50
While averaging .55 points per game
Under Tortorella;
16:44
13:23
11:14
7:01
While averaging .39 points per game
what else can someone say about EC? he's useless. no heart. he hasnt figured it out and it doent look like he is going to. he's painful to watch plain and simple and what makes it worse is all of the 2,3,4,5,6, 89 second chances... disgusting.
wolski is a waste of carbon too.
I don't think they should waive Avery, and instead Christensen, but everyone needs to calm down. This team needs to figure out how to win without Avery, because one day he won't be on this team. The fans need to stop ripping Tortorella for this decision too, ultimately he is going to do whats best for the 22 guys in the room.

@deleted_2065836_andy11 as someone who played hockey, I'll tell you Tortorella is a great coach. Does he have a personal dislike of Avery? Yes. But if Avery was meant to stick, then he would.
Ive said it a hundred times.. Ill say t again. Torts will not stop until he Runs Avery out of NY or ends his NHL career.
i understand the need for head coach to have absolute power. .. But there should be some sort of "players association grievance" when a situation like this is so blatantly personal and not performance based. It is after all... an abuse of power... and it is this man's career he's f*cking with... I guess that would open some can of worms though. Christensen has been a ridiculous bust since his arrival and he keeps getting these additional chances. I try to like torts because he is a winning coach.. but that doesn't mean he is without flaws and mistakes...his inconsistencies and petty grudges are not good for the team
Its a shame Avery got caught in this unjust crossfire in what is likely his last season as an NHL'er. The Avery haters are rejoicing again.
EC and wolski bring nothing to this team. but avery will be the one to go because torts hates him.
@thenyrblog ok if I'm torts why would I not dress dubby for few games and start Avery ? Because torts hates Avery ...
Sad but true assessment, Kev. I now I am pretty biased on this one, but I would waive EC and trade or waive Wolski at this point then keep Aves as the 13th. EC has been a bust from minute one this season, and honestly, I don't think we need a guy like Wolski in our lineup. We have too much talent and depth in the minors to worry about spending that kind o money on an inconsistent, physically fragile player. Furthermore, (unless I am mistaken) Wolski was out with a sports hernia and (again unless I am mistaken) did not get the surgery to repair it (because he would have been out for months). This means that he is basically a ticking timebomb until he is hurt again. But in the end all signs point to another goodbye to Mr. Avery.
I know Torts may not like Avery but he doesn't have an impact. at all. His role was to be an extra forward. He came back when Rupp went down but it was never in the cards for him to stay. The team identity has changed and it is not like his antagonizing antics are as effective as they once were. At the end of the day he was on borrowed time so this should not come as a surprise.
@TomUrtzNYR So bloody tired of people talking like you, dude. Check the tape. When Avery came back and was getting minutes, he was making plays, drawing penalties, and assisting as well as scoring goals. He was and IS an impact player. Anyone who doesn't see it is ether blind, stupid or just completely biased on the subject.
Point is Avery never had a roster spot. Never did and if Sather wanted him here, he would be. Everyone things Tortorella calls all the shots but Sather has more control than most think
I like Avery but I hate fans that are making a huge deal over the 13th forward. It is not like he has a future here past this season. With Kreider, Hagelin, Miller, Bourque threatening to make the roster there is no place for EC, Wolski, Avery and Fedotenko.
Also he wasn't assisting on any goals. He has only three goals in 21 games. That is not "Impact" production. I am sorry but this is being blown way out of proportion. He is not the same player he once was and people need to realize that.
Avery is a cap causality and is the easiest player to send down to make room for other players.
It is really cut and dry. I have watched every game this year and he has been a factor in a slim few.
@Billfrom Brookhaven I don't disagree with that statement. My only point was this. Currently Avery is the prime candidate to be waived because the Rangers will not carry around a 2 million dollar healthy scratch. I wished they would waive Wolski but they simply won't for whatever reason. Avery is gone after this season because there isn't a spot for him. Players like Avery come and go. IE: Matthew Barnaby, Sandy McCarthy, etc.
@TomUrtzNYR@CJ thats the stupidest thing ive ever heard because sather spends the whole season in florida and has 0 control, the thing is tomurtz is that you are a fatty and have no hockey experience and have no idea what you are talking about, you think you are right but you my friend are completely wrong, how does a college player go from ncaa right to the nhl? are you retarded? and avery is one of the best skaters on the team, rupp sucks and does nothing, by the way avery has played 15 games and averages around 6-7 minutes a game if hes lucky, he makes the best of his limited playing time and cannot maintain any consistency when he is not consistently in the lineup, prust is great, he fights, penalty kills, scores a few goals etc, but the rest of the lineup is soft and needs an energy guy on the ice, your telling me a team like pittsburgh with all their talent dont feed off of their scum bag energy guy in cooke?, he seems to get a lot of ice time in pitt especially with all their super stars. Him and avery play identical roles, oh thats right though, since torts has been here the rangers have struggled to make the playoffs while pitt makes it easily every year and makes runs
Tom, a fourth line player is never measured by his goal production...I don't know if you remember Jan Erixon,he was on the ice shadowing every top player in the league especially Mario Lemeaux ,any goals he scored were a bonus. its kind of funny no one mentions defensive forwards any more.Given proper ice time I think Ave's could be a better player at least until the kids you mentioned are seasoned players
@TomUrtzNYR@Beckfan5@CJ Correct me if I'am wrong but doesn't Kreider have another year to go in school? His decision to stay in school this year tells me that he intends to get his degree before turning pro.
@TomUrtzNYR@Beckfan5 Exactly what everyone else said. HAHAHA. Oh and that link proves our point not yours. Slats never wanted Avery to go, but he could not stop Torts from sending him away.
Trust me dude, A LOT of people have looked at this one very closely, people with far more skin in the game than you or I, and it always comes up the same. The New York Rangers are a better team with Sean Avery, period. That has been the case since the first time he laced em up for Tom Renny 5 1/2 years ago and it is still the case today. Our record is ALWAYS better with him in the lineup. He elevates the team (don't ask me how, I don't know.) He is as fast as any 2nd liner out there, as grindy as any 4th liner and better at drawing penalties than anyone in the league. His teammates love him, his fans adore him, and there is no one in the sport the media enjoys more (positively or negatively). Sitting here, making the arguments you are making only makes you come off as a hater, and the same goes double for coach Torts.
@Beckfan5 I really don't understand why this is being debated. He is clearly outplaying college kids. When his term is up it would make sense to give him a stint in the NHL first. They then know where he stands skills wise.
@TomUrtzNYR So your proclamation that the Rangers are going to let him go directly to "the show" is based solely on your gut feeling?
Who do you write for?
@Beckfan5 Sources for what exactly? If you have seen him play you can tell he is ready. I mean he is a top ranked prospect.
@TomUrtzNYR@CJ Yes. You should never force/rush your prospects, in any sport, along.
But my opinion means nothing. So, again, who are your sources?
@TomUrtzNYR@CJ ".....they are going to let him work it out in the big show off the bat not the AHL"
Who are your sources?
@TomUrtzNYR@CJ Yes, because players that rip it up in college usually go directly to the pros and become superstars.
And if the Rangers were looking to save on cap space why wouldn't they waive Wolski and his $4 million contract instead?
Oh, that's right, because you despise Avery.
@angelsam funny, Prust and Rupp can do the same thing that you call "intangibles". Avery is a loud mouth agitator who checks and fights and raises hell correct. Rupp and Prust do the same thing.
@Beckfan5@CJ I. Kreider is lighting it up on the college level and could join the team in March/April once his obligations to the NCAA are fulfilled. If you have seen Miller play you would know he has a good shot of making the roster. Bourque is another player in the AHL who can make team as a fourth liner next year. For Hagelin, yes he is on the team now but that doesn't mean he is a lock next year.
Trust me, I am equally pissed that Boyle, Dubi etc aren't getting dealt with in the appropriate manner.
As for the I have no idea what I am talking bout with his salary, his salary is halved. Right now we have 0 cap space. Avery frees up just under 2 million. Who do you keep on your roster to be a healthy scratch? Avery- 1.9 mill, or EC- 900 k?
The one million dollars savings is something the Rangers will use.
For the Sather bit, remember when Tortorella basically said he was done, http://nyrnation.net/read-sean-avery-could-return-via-hartford/ those statements by Sather prove he still has a lot of say in what goes on.
avery brings intangibles.
you claim to watch every game but if you did you would know this. also the fact that you mentioned he has no assists is hilarious...i didnt know avery was a playmaker.
like the other guys mentioned, he has good production in VERY LIMITED ICE TIME.
dubinsky gets a whole bunch of ice time to contribute what?......a random assist here and there.
@TomUrtzNYR@CJ Boy do you come off as clueless. You need to check the facts and do some research before making any assumptions and proclamations.
What makes you so matter of fact and positive that Sather calls all of the shots? Do you have any proof of this? Because I would bet that Tortorella fills out the lineup card every game. That is what he gets paid to do.
Fans aren't making a huge deal over a 13th forward. They're making a big deal about the fact that Avery has gotten the shaft this season all the while other players on the team that have produced so little (Boyle, Fedetenko, Dubinsky, Rupp, Christensen) continue to be heavily relied upon game in and game out.
"With Kreider, Hagelin, Miller, Bourque threatening to make the roster there is no place for EC, Wolski, Avery and Fedotenko."
Funny, considering that 3 of the 4 youngsters that you mentioned are probably at least a year away from making the club and the other one has been on the team for the last 12 games.
If Tortorella didnt decide to bury Avery on the bench in most of the games he has dressed for, then maybe his production would be greater. You cant expect a player to contribute when he's seen less than 10:00 of ice in all but 2 of his 15 games played ( you stated that he's dressed for 21 )and less than 5:30 minuets in 4 of his last 6 games.
To say that Avery is a cap casualty proves that you dont know what you are taking about. Because the Rangers are only paying him half of his salary.
@TomUrtzNYR@CJ As compared to EC? Boyle? Prust? Dubi? Feds? Wolski is a non-factor because he's just now getting out of the tub. Give him a month and he'll be right back there. This is the year we're supposed to be grooming the youth, not throwing them to the wolves just yet. Avery helped bring a spark to a lifeless team. What's the harm in letting him do so on the third or fourth line and letting him bow out gracefully at the end of the season?
@CJ @TomUrtzNYR yeah CJ is right, we saw a measured, controlled Avery, Torts must hate his fkin guts :(
