...bash away, everyone. Bash away.
I also will respond...
The 3 guys for $10 million remark was a "hypothetical" situation...you know instead of putting all of your eggs in one basket, address a lack of scoring on all 3 lines instead of putting it all on the 1st. Kevin had said the Rangers had little success with contracts like this in the past (Drury, Gomez, Redden...etc). I also mentioned acquiring players through a trade by having cap space the same way LA acquired Mike Richards. They gave up a top prospect in Brayden Schenn and a good role player in Wayne Simmonds but they got a 1st line Center in return who is only 26 not 31.
Though we are Islander fans, we are hockey guys, We addressed that even Ranger fans (Kevin is a perfect example) were not totally thrilled by the Richards signing. We discussed this in detail with Kevin, and 3 of us agreed that we didn't feel it was the right thing, Brad Richards is a very good player and a 1st line center...but the Rangers are paying him $57 million through 2017. For example, Mike Richards contract is for a lesser cap hit for the same length as Brad's
Our discussion wasn't about hating the Rangers, it was whether this contract makes sense and if the Rangers were just a player away from being a contending team. Even with Richards, can you compare them with the Caps, Bruins and Pens? Those teams are extremely deep and used Free Agency to get even deeper.
Thanks for the great comments and keep listening for more great NYR debates!
I'm not sure which "Bozo" i'm mentioned as below...but ill respond to the stuff that i said...
- I've been waiting to get kevin back on because i know how much he did not want this signing and i love getting him fired up about it, and as was just pointed out, most of the actual "hate" came from Kev, which is what i intended. And Richards IS a injury risk, as is ANY player who ever suffers a concussion. Also, as i said, think kevin is nuts for thinking they need more scoring
-I think Henrik is a tremendous goalie...but...the rangers ABSOLUTELY wear down Lundqvist...he has played over 68 gms each of the last 5 years and like it or not, come playoff time he is worn down...he has NEVER stolen a playoff series for them against a superior opponent... NEVER....and if they keep playing him over 70 games a year, that trend will contiunue....and don't use Brodeur as an example...he has 3 rings, he's proven something
- No i don't think the Rangers are "locks" for the playoffs next year...after Pit,Wsh,Bos,Buf, and Tb there is a drop off in the east and the Rangers are in the mix of teams from 6-11...Richards makes them better, but no better than everyone else....
-Kevin brought up past Rangers spending problems..not us
-Kevin brought up buying the guy out in the future before he has even stepped on the ice..not us
-and as @terenceteets just pointed out.....we have done PLENTY of pro Rangers spots with and without Kevin...I even foolishly picked them on the show to beat the caps back in april....we are far from "Rangers Haters"
The hosts on the show were mostly defending the Richards signing stating the Rangers got the best guy available from what I heard. There was some chop busting but about Hank and how the standings may shape up but it was far from a "Richards Hatefest." Most of the dislike of the signing came from Mr. DeLury
Those hosts have also done some great "pro Ranger" shows in the past that I've heard from Mulcahy's during the playoffs last season and a couple from The Windfall in Manhattan that Mr. DeLury was a part of. Be nice to see links to those shows as well.
Poor little prince Edward island boy boo hoo hoo. Gimme a break. Why shouldn't he bashed? Drink on kool aiders
*Richards "Injury problems" laughable
*Can't wait to have Gabby go over 40 again, haters.
*As far as "depth n back end" it's obvious bozo 1 knows nothing about the Rangers and didn't watch a Ranger game last year.
*So hung up on the money the Rangers spent in the past. We have some of the best contracts in hockey.
*I'll buy you a Richards jersey Kev.
*Spend 10 mill on 3 players, not one? Who did we spend 10 mill on? C'mon with the lack of truth and facts.
*"75 games a year, he stink in the playoffs" Have these guys watched Brodeur? Has Bozo 1 seen how much great goalies in the past play? Are they seriously talking about Hank?
*"out of the playoffs, they stink, I can't wait for our season preview!"
Neither can we fellas..................pick against us, please do, you guys know nothing. Your lack of knowledge is laughable, ridiculous.
Oh I LOVE that the one idiot thinks the Rangers won't make the playoffs. Not a single top eight eastern team upgraded their team more than the rangers did with Richards. Buffalo overspent for mediocre talent. The other team that got significantly better was FLORIDA, and that was just because they were so terrible...
Honestly Kevin, I don't think you defended your team enough at all. It is so clear that they are a bunch of Ranger haters and if fans were writing here some of the ridiculous stuff that they said you would respond very differently. C'mon Kev, Richards "Injury Prone", are you kidding me? I would love to hear you back with these bozo's again, I know all about the mutual respect you have to give to one another when your a guest on their show, did you listen to the piece again? Let them have it next time when we are in first in the Atlantic. "That's why Hank is always so bad in the playoffs" I can't believe these guys are on the air they are so terrible.
How funny was it when these clowns opened the show talking about how bad the Richards contracts was and none of them new how long it was. Guy number one "Six years." The other guy "six and change" WTF? These guys are completely full of it. I am not even going to discuss that contract on this thread because of how clueless these guys are.
I have to disagree with you kevin. Just because you stop bringing in overpriced veterans year after year, and start building from within, doesn't mean you cant upgrade your team. Who was the budding star who lost his roster spot this year due to the richards signing? These guys are still developing, will still come up through our system, and hopefully be impact players in future years, but richards isnt the only center spot we had open. Nothing has really changed in my opinion in terms of front office philosophy, they just got a missing piece they didnt have in the system to make this team alot better. The core of this team has been growing steadily the last 3-4 years, and we cant just keep growing with this group for 3 more years till we get other prospects, this core group needs to take the next step... deeper playoff runs. We made our team better, they can learn from a guy who has been there before and will just reinforce the system they have been part of since torts came, another plus. I understand you being skeptical, we have been burned like this before, but all the little things (taking less money, cup experience, thrived in current system, really wants to play here) point to this being a really good move... it feels right. You can build from within, but you should also upgrade... it is a balancing act we didnt get right till now.
It's a tough one. I understand the points for both sides.
The Richards signing doesn't completely preclude developing prospects. On the one hand, yes, it does mean they have to wait a little longer for Thomas, Hagelin, or even Zuccarello to have a regular spot with the club, but we didn't really give up any of our young guys for Richards. On the other hand, if they do adopt the "win now" philosophy, that could lead to giving up a prospect at the trade deadline.
I hope it's a compromise: we stay committed to the youth; the Richards signing addresses a number of immediate needs, and he can be an effective leader and mentor to the kids.
@IceCreepsMike , all good points, Bozo... er, Mike ; )
I would add that another way the Rangers wear down Lundquist is by making too many mistakes, especially in the neutral zone, that lead to odd man rushes and opponents running him into the net. Not only is he playing those games, he's often having to make a lot of saves while he gets little protection for all the times he's run in to. This is all slightly besides the point, but you got me thinking.
@terenceteets Will definitely link to previous shows in the future.
@buttabella I've been on with those guys numerous times and always defend the Rangers. But you all know where I stand on the Richards thing so they had me in a spot to criticize the team a bit.
@ivanricov Totally agree. All teams have to make a move to get a top guy nowadays. Through trade or free agency you have to go out and get a game changer. The penguins grew fleury and Crosby, but they went out and got Malkin. The Blackhawks built from within but they got Cambell and Hossa. If you look at the teams around this league and look at the cap hits of the top players the richards, gaborik and Lunks contracts are pretty good. Every signing is a risk, but you need to take a chance when I top guy comes along and fits the EXACT ROLE you need to fill to make your team a contender. Richards is that guy AND Sather waited until he was free agent and didn't give up anybody to get him. If you want to argue about roster spots, then Richards just took Prospals spot and every other restricted free agent we needed we resigned. I hated Sather for so long. But this summer he has done everything almost exactly as I would have. (Would have locked up Callahan for longer).
@ivanricov I hear what you're saying but my main concern is the young guys aren't ready yet. I don't feel like this team is talented enough, even with Richards, to take the next step. I would have just liked for them to continue to develop then in 2-3 years when the young guys were seasoned to go after what they needed. I know that's a lot to ask, especially in New York, but it seemed like the direction they were going then boom bring in Richards and now it's Stanley Cup or bust.
I've also cited as a concern that bringing Richards in makes them a win now team, meaning they will be more willing to trade away young talent to get them over the top and I'm worried it won't be enough.
@IMLazzaro It really is awful. I went to college in the Midwest and people freaked out when I talked.
@KingBadaBing i agree .. I gotta say that I dont really understand where anyone in their right mind thinks that bringing in 3 "scorers" with 6.7 million is a) possible with the crop that was available and b) how you make that possible with 6.7 mil considering a 34 year old always hurt eric cole got 4 million and a guy like fleischman and upshall get 4 mill.. secondly what the hell happens to the 3 roster sports we would have filled up signing 3 guys???
@andrewstamant29 exactly In the market we got him in with 6.6 cap hit is amazing. Now look at a team like Toronto who did the definition of a desperate move and signed Tim connoly
