Assistant GM Jeff Gorton says this about Bell (via Blueshirts United)...
"Brendan is a good character guy who gives us another player with experience who will compete for an NHL job in training camp,"
The Rangers have announced today that the club has agreed to terms with free agent defenseman Brendan Bell.
Bell, 28, has skated in 101 career NHL contests with the Ottawa Senators, Phoenix Coyotes and Toronto Maple Leafs, registering seven goals and 21 assists for 28 points, along with 51 penalty minutes.
Last season, Bell tallied two goals and nine assists for 11 points, along with 14 penalty minutes in 29 games with EHC Biel of the Swiss A-League. He led all team defensemen in assists and points, and tied for third on the team overall with a plus-two rating. Bell also skated in one contest with Omsk Avangard of the Continental Hockey League (KHL), recording two assists in his only appearance.
Meanwhile, Mitch Beck at the Howlings is puzzled by the signing and wonders if a move might be forthcoming that involves moving some defensive depth to obtain either a front line left-winger or perhaps Shea Weber.
...i know the Rangers have defensive depth but I'd hate to give some of it away. Although, with the Richards signing the Rangers are in win now mode and they do need to upgrade their offense some more if they want to make a legit run for the Cup.
...and no way they're getting Weber.
i don't see how this is a prelude to anything. this is nothing more than a depth move if, god forbid, we lose two or more of our D to injuries. yeah, it'd be nice to look at valentenko for a few games, but if he's not ready or the injuries are long term, then we'd have to bring in redden which would kill us on the cap.
Interesting comments, one and all. I'm a little stumped. I mean, we have depth, so why is it a depth move? Let the kids play. Anyway, I'll be interested to see how it plays out. I agree with all of those that say Shea is unlikely and you don't like to think what it would take to get him.
My guess is it is the roster spot in Hartford that Pashnin would have taken, had he signed to play in NA. Seeing as he chose Siberia instead, another defenseman was needed.
Girardi, V-Tank, Wolski, and pick for Weber and I say signs up for it. Doubt it would be enough but it would be nice. Not sure who they could get for Left Wing. Would be nice to see what they have first. And I disagree, this is a win now and for the forseeable future team. They han't sacrificed anything from a youth perspective...yet.
Torts likes that big body, I can see Sather making a deal for Shea, but it will cost us the farm and first round picks.
I don't even want to imagine what we'd have to do to get Shea Weber. This could get us a winger, but I think the guys we are looking at could be too expensive.
Depth move, probably for the whale, would be interesting to see if we trade a valentenko (talented but I think he has no spot on our team) for a LW
@AndyS Obviously the most likely reason.
@gravey94 Key word is "yet."
@briangsharon I'd hate to see V-Tank go but I agree if one of them has to be move he's probably the first one gone.
@KevinDeLury Come on Kevin, have a little faith ;-)
@gravey94 You know where I stand on this.
