John Tortorella speaks to the media about how he plans on doing nothing but watch the game behind the bench during the Skills Competition and All Star Game this weekend...

...this is a classic Torts interview, giving the media absolutely nothing. They all want Torts to talk strategy, but all he talks about is being a spectator.

...also awesome listening to Torts talk about how excited he is for Girardi being selected into the All Star game.

averywhale2Sean Avery returned to the CT Whale line-up and scored his second goal in the seven games since being re-assigned, but it wasn't enough as the Rangers AHL affiliate lost their 10th straight game 3-2 to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in overtime last night.

After netting his goal, Avery got into an altercation with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's Joey Mormina and was given roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct minors and a 10-minute misconduct.

Mats Zuccarello was also re-inserted into the line-up after missing the previous four games and 17 of 18 with an ankle injury sustained in a 3-2 loss at Providence on Dec. 11.

...now that's the Avery I know and love. If he can continue to score some goals while playing his agitating game he will force an NHL team to take a chance on him this summer.

...got to say the two of these guys have been hysterical so far this weekend. Have really added to the entertainment of the event. Especially for Rangers fans.

Great video of Daniel Alfredsson and Henrik Lundqvist picking the Team Alfredsson line-up for tonight's NHL All Star Skills Competition...

...thought it was interesting watching Lundqvist pick Hagelin for the Elimination Shootout then say that he's good and he trusts him. The rookie must have burned him a few times in practice.

hagelinscoresagainDan Rosen at NHL.com reports that Carl Hagelin will participate in the fastest skater competition for Team Alfredsson during the All Star Skills Competition Saturday night.

Daniel Aldredsson thinks Hagelin will win. The Rangers rookie will also be in the elimination shootout.

Marian Gaborik will not be participating against his teammate but will represent Team Chara in the Skills Challenge Relay and Elimination Shootout.

Meanwhile Dan Girardi will compete in the Accuracy Shootout as a passer for Team Alfredsson.

...no shock Hagelin was chosen for fastest skate. Pretty cool to hear Alfredsson say he thinks the Rangers rookie will win.

...surprised that Gaborik isn't competing against Hags in fastest skate. Maybe he bowed out so he's not embarrassed by the rook.

...Girardi totally getting snubbed by Hank, who apparently thinks his #1 defenseman is only good enough to be a passer.

For full Skills Competition line-up click here.

Finally, Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun reports that John Tortorella will allow Alfredsson and Lundqvist to make the lines and defensive pairs for the All Star Game.

Joe DeLessio at New York Magazine does an amazing job breaking down the Broadway Hat recipients this season in this chart...

broadwayhatlist
DeLessio adds that there are eleven Rangers who have skated in at least one game this season, but haven't been awarded the hat with the most surprising being Ryan McDonagh.

...McDonagh has only scored once since October 31st, so not many opportunities for him, but he might have been over looked during January as he's had three +3 games this month.

...Callahan should only have one Broadway Hat because of his diss of the hat Tuesday night.

Chris Peters at the United States of Hockey lists his 2011-12 Mid-Season All-America Team with Brandon Dubinsky (C), Derek Stepan (C), Ryan Callahn (RW) and Ryan McDonagh (D) all receiving Honorable Mentions at their respective positions.

...while I'd like to argue that Callahan should have gotten First or Second Team right wing consideration it's hard to argue that he should be ahead of guys like Kessel, Pominville and Kane.

...btw, how does Dubinsky get an Honorable Mention?

Meanwhile, Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy takes a gander at what a 2012 Defensive All Star roster would look like and it includes Callahan, Brian Boyle, Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh.

Wyshynski adds that McDonagh has become one the league' best defenders in just his sophomore year.

...i think Torts would be thrilled to see four of his players selected to this team. Also awesome to see McDonagh getting recognized for his stellar first half of the season.

Finally, John Buccigross at ESPN.com ranks Dan Girardi #91 and Ryan Callahan #61 in his Top 100 NHL players #s 50-100.

He will release the rest of his list shortly.

Steve Zipay at Newsday feels that trade talk involving the Rangers will be picking up soon and that there are numerous players that have piqued their interest.

Zipay says that Columbus' Vinny Prospal; Anaheim's Teemu Selanne; Buffalo's Derek Roy and Carolina's Tuomo Ruutu are among the names linked to the Rangers as they all could help the beleaguered power play.

Zipay notes that Prospal could be had on the cheap while players like Roy and Ruutu would cost a player, a prospect and a pick. Selanne would have to waive his no-trade clause before any trade is approved.

...while Roy (9g, 16a, -11) & Ruutu (15g, 11a, -1) are solid players, I'm not sure they're worth giving up as much as Zipay thinks. Especially with Ruutu likely just a rental being in the final year of his contract ($3.8 million this season) and Roy, a former 30-goal scorer, looking like he hasn't fully healed from his torn quad tendon last year.

According to Zipay, on defense, the names of Lubomir Visnovky, Sheldon Souray and Tim Gleason have been floated. Zipay points out that Visnovsky (5g, 12a) carries a $5.2 million salary and Souray's ship has sailed.

As previously posted on this blog, Zipay says Tortorella likes Gleason.

...i know it's crazy to say, but of the guys mentioned I think Souray would be the best fit financially (final year of contract, $1.65 million) and personnel wise (2g, 3a on the power play and one hell of a shot). Plus I think the Rangers could get him for just a couple of picks.

In other trade news, Bob McKenzie at TSN floated the idea of Dallas' Brenden Morrow possibly being on the trade market.

Morrow has 8g, 14a on the season and has two years left on his contract at $4.1 million per.

...Morrow could be interesting as he bring a lot of experience as well as familiarity with Richards. Shouldn't cost that much to get him.

gabbydraft
Similar to last season, the NHL All Star Draft was highly entertaining and filled with suspense as we waited to see who would get Kessel'd this year. But the obvious highlight was Marian Gaborik mistakenly walking over to Team Alfredsson after being chosen by Team Chara. With the grin he shined afterward (see above pic), I wouldn't be surprised if he did that on purpose. Or was just drunk. See video here.

Gaborik took to Twitter after the draft to explain himself...

Wanted to make the draft more interesting,so I walked to the other side:)))#allstardraft

Was actually shocked to see the Rangers sniper last so long, but Lundqvist did mention after the draft that he was giving Chara the chance to draft his fellow countryman and that Gaborik said wanted to shoot against him which was the likely reason for the snub. Gaborik is the only Ranger on Team Chara, as Lundqvist, Girardi, Hagelin and even Tortorella are all representing Team Alfredsson.

Here's Gaborik on the Lundqvist diss (via Blueshirts United)...

"Hank knows I own him," laughed Gaborik after the draft. "It was just a lot of fun between me and him. It's all in fun. We are all really proud to represent the Rangers this weekend."

Lundqvist & Gaborik had some playful banter after the draft which you can watch here...
